Many of us have built, or have watched children build, pyramids, towers, columns, with toy blocks. Some of these were intricate and showed a great consciousness of the limitations of the blocks as well as an appreciation for symmetry and design. Others have been, in effect, simply piles of blocks which were doomed to tumble before they were anywhere near complete. So it is with much of our experience as we pro- ceed through school. The way in which we use past experience to control and govern our lives in the present and future provides a strong indication of our understanding of ourselves and the use of our skills and abilities. A well balanced school program helps us to discover ourselves and provides us with those experiences which will enable us to construct a rich and successful adult life; enabling us to give much to the enrichment of the lives of others and to take from life those things which will enhance and make more fruitful our own lives. DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION Dr. Ben Wallace Superintendent of Schools SEATED: Mr. Charles Cone (Asst. Business Manager), Dr. Ben Wallace (Superintendent). STANDING: Mr. Joseph Brust (Asst. JOSEPH BESOSA BOARD OF EDUCATION The financial and educational responsibilities of District 10 are governed by the capable members of the Board of Education. These hard-working citizens are faced with the many problems concerning curriculum, budget, and educational techniques, which they have ap- proached with vigor and resolution. Their most demanding task has been the management of Mineola’s expanding educa- tional system. With the building of the new high school and the adjustments necessary to relo- cate the junior high, the Board has had to initi- ate major policy changes. In conjunction with these special problems, they have had to face the annual task of revising and updating the budget. In all these activities, the members of the Board have proven their dependability by giving Mineola a modern educational system which her citizens regard with pride. Thus, it is with sincere gratitude that this year's Signet Staff, speaking for the entire stu- dent body, takes this opportunity to express our thanks. 6

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION Spending his first year at Mineola, Mr. George Russo is seen to be a capable and hard working assistant principal. He has taught at several other schools and was chairman of the Social Studies De- partment at one of them for six years. We welcome Mr. Russo to his new post and hope that it affords him much sat- isfaction. Dr. Knute Larson, now in his second year as principal, has proved to be a competent and energetic administrator. This year he has concentrated on blue- print work for an expanded program of approved vocational training. Although Mineola High offers an outstanding col- lege-preparatory curriculum, Dr. Larson sees the growing need for more courses in terminal education, and has done much research to find effective ways of organizing these courses at Mineola. He certainly deserves the appreciation of all for his fine efforts in our behalf. New Assistant Principal, Dr. Henry Rosenbluth, is no stranger to Mineola High School, having been chairman of the Guidance Department here last year. Considerable experience in both the field of teaching and of guidance make him well qualified for this position. May we extend our wish that Dr. Rosenbluth enjoys a very successful career at Mine- ola. 8
