FOREWORD “Every man is the architect of his own for- tune.” — English Proverb. The building of ev- ery man’s future depends upon the strength of his foundation and the quality of his mate- rials, the blocks, from which it has been erected. All of the activities in school, and the experiences of these years will provide the substance from which we may mold the blocks for our futures. In these pages, the 1965 Signet Staff at- tempts to depict the various aspects of school life which may form these building blocks. With blocks fashioned from experi- ence and a strong foundation built upon knowledge, each of us will be provided with the materials to become the architect of a successful future. PUBLISHED BY THE CLASS OF 1965 MINEOLA HIGH SCHOOL GARDEN CITY PARK NEW YORK ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF JUNIORS SENIORS HONORS ACTIVITIES SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS ✓ Vice President DR. ERNEST MICHAELSON MR. CYRIL HOLLIDAY MR. SAMUEL DONATO MR. WALTER H. HOCK President MR. JOSEPH BESOSA BOARD OF EDUCATION The financial and educational responsibilities of District 10 are governed by the capable members of the Board of Education. These hard-working citizens are faced with the many problems concerning curriculum, budget, and educational techniques, which they have ap- proached with vigor and resolution. Their most demanding task has been the management of Mineola’s expanding educa- tional system. With the building of the new high school and the adjustments necessary to relo- cate the junior high, the Board has had to initi- ate major policy changes. In conjunction with these special problems, they have had to face the annual task of revising and updating the budget. In all these activities, the members of the Board have proven their dependability by giving Mineola a modern educational system which her citizens regard with pride. Thus, it is with sincere gratitude that this year's Signet Staff, speaking for the entire stu- dent body, takes this opportunity to express our thanks. 6 Many of us have built, or have watched children build, pyramids, towers, columns, with toy blocks. Some of these were intricate and showed a great consciousness of the limitations of the blocks as well as an appreciation for symmetry and design. Others have been, in effect, simply piles of blocks which were doomed to tumble before they were anywhere near complete. So it is with much of our experience as we pro- ceed through school. The way in which we use past experience to control and govern our lives in the present and future provides a strong indication of our understanding of ourselves and the use of our skills and abilities. A well balanced school program helps us to discover ourselves and provides us with those experiences which will enable us to construct a rich and successful adult life; enabling us to give much to the enrichment of the lives of others and to take from life those things which will enhance and make more fruitful our own lives. DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION Dr. Ben Wallace Superintendent of Schools SEATED: Mr. Charles Cone (Asst. Business Manager), Dr. Ben Wallace (Superintendent). STANDING: Mr. Joseph Brust (Asst. Superintendent), Dr. Roy Delahney (Asst. Superintendent). 7 SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION Spending his first year at Mineola, Mr. George Russo is seen to be a capable and hard working assistant principal. He has taught at several other schools and was chairman of the Social Studies De- partment at one of them for six years. We welcome Mr. Russo to his new post and hope that it affords him much sat- isfaction. Dr. Knute Larson, now in his second year as principal, has proved to be a competent and energetic administrator. This year he has concentrated on blue- print work for an expanded program of approved vocational training. Although Mineola High offers an outstanding col- lege-preparatory curriculum, Dr. Larson sees the growing need for more courses in terminal education, and has done much research to find effective ways of organizing these courses at Mineola. He certainly deserves the appreciation of all for his fine efforts in our behalf. New Assistant Principal, Dr. Henry Rosenbluth, is no stranger to Mineola High School, having been chairman of the Guidance Department here last year. Considerable experience in both the field of teaching and of guidance make him well qualified for this position. May we extend our wish that Dr. Rosenbluth enjoys a very successful career at Mine- ola. 8 GUIDANCE MR. EDWARD TRAVIS Director of Guidance MISS SALLY PHILLIPS MR. W. BERGEN SIMONSON MR. The Father’s Club strives for better understanding of student schooling, recognition of achievement in scholastics and academics, and assistance in areas of learning and development outside the regular school program. The Scholarship Program, Sports Night Dinner, and Junior-Senior Prom are the high lights of our year-long program that give us great pleasure. Our rewards are gratifying. At the end of the school year we see great achievements — young men and women ready to take their places in society, some going on to greater accomplishments in colleges and technical schools. We wish the class of '65 success in every endeavor. John E. Specht President Mr. J. Specht President C. Dullea, B. Zinober. T. O'Brien, W. Kuffler, C. Holli- day, J. Specht, R. Mengert. W. We must look to the future and see what lies ahead. After the final year of high school, we will be on the road to a new life. For some, it will mean higher edu- cation; for some the time will have come to face the world. For all it means decision about the future. The time to think is right now before we are forced to make a snap decision which could lead to long unhappi- ness. Let us think and act wisely, and we will succeed in all our endeavors. You are blind. Miraculously, yet obviously, the storm ends. Now, upon graduation, we must ask ourselves, how well did we endure the storm? As Freshmen did we run when the wind howled? As Sopho- mores, did we flinch when the snow beat? As Juniors, were we still blind? And, as Seniors, did we end the storm or has it ended us? Wher- , ever life may find us next year or ten years from now, we are certain to be in the midst of another storm. How, then, can we prepare for that storm? Each one of us, individually, must evaluate his performance in high school, for there are many lessons to be learned from the past. We must be the innovators of an improved society, not the espousers of a deca- dent one. Finally, the past must be left and the future sought. When we pass through these portals for the last time, we are leaving the security of familiarity. We are moving toward an even greater storm, where the wind howls louder, the snow beats harder and the blindness is greater. To master that storm, we must accept the challenge it presents to us. It was hard to believe that I was really an American exchange student soon to be living with a family abroad. Vitd- ria, a seaport north of Rio de Janeiro, would be my new home. In many ways life in Brazil is similar to that here. Around the house girls like to wear sweaters and slacks, but a skirt and blouse are a must for the city. Although rice and beef are the usual evening meal, many families include other meats and vege- tables too. Coffee follows. Brazilians enjoy parties, music and soccer. Many Brazilians go to the movies three times a week. Distinctive of Brazilians is their unhurried way of life. Brazil was once nothing more than a name on a map, but now, through the American Field Service, Brazil is sunny beaches, beautiful cities, coffee and rolls for breakfast, and people. It’s as much of me as a heartbeat. WITH AFS Nickie's family — SEATED: Isao, brother: Akinori. father: STANDING: Haruko: Michiko. mother: Yoshiko. sister. My name is Haruko Agatsuma. I am an exchange student from Japan. I live with my family in the large city of Tok- yo, where my father is a printer. My mother is a housewife, and my sister and brother both attend school, as I do. When I go back to Japan, I will have to go to school for another half year. After I graduate from Mita Senior High School (M.H.S.), I would like to go to the International Christian University which is for foreign students. I am having a wonderful time in the United States. I like Mineola High School very much, and I am very happy to be here. So now I say to you Sayonara.” In Japanese that means good-bye. Haruko (Nickie) Agatsuma ROBERT ALLMAN - Elect. Svce. For some of us this marks the end of our formal education, and for others a new beginning. But in a larger sense the process of educational growth never stops — all experience is a teach- er. Whatever achievements we attain in the fu- ture, we owe, at least in part, to the past. Our high school years have formed the foundation upon which we can build our individual towers of achievement. Yet while we look to this bright future, we must not forget the labor that has constructed our past. The last two decades have given us the very authority to determine whether there will be a future. When the reins of power fall to our generation, we must be prepared to assume that responsibility and convert our fa- thers’ mistakes into our successes. Our high school years have played a vital role in the pro- per development of our capacity to deal with that world-to-be. This obligation is not to be taken lightly; we can create or destroy forever a tomorrow worthy of being passed on to gen- erations yet to come. We can secure knowl- edge; it is left to us to apply it for a better world. Jack Preses SALUTATORIAN Jack Preses HONOR SOCIETY - SEATED: E. Martone (Sec.), J. Tulley (Pres.), L. Taylor (V. Pres.), J. Aided by the other officers, Ann Morel, Janice Ryan, and Glenn Wing, the G.O. has added many new services to its already long list of functions. In addition to the traditional institutions of Winter Carnival, Maroon Day, and Alumni Night, they have branched into such diverse areas as the sponsorship of Elton Be- lone, an Indian student, and the installation of a fruit machine in the cafete- ria. Thus, in addition to providing a model of the democratic system, the G.O. has continued to offer real benefits to all the students of Mineola High. 109 SIGNET STAFF - SEATED - (Floor): C. Tietz, M. After four frenetic deadlines and a vast increase in the inci- dence of ulcers at Mineola High, the 1965 Signet is off the presses. For its labors, the members of the staff have a collection of cheering memo- ries: rephotographing the Sen- iors, Juniors, Faculty, sports, and G.O. Representatives; re- drawing the Seniors, Activities, and sports layouts; and the inevitable last minute dash to the post office ... too late. We know that there must be a system for all this, but it has somehow eluded us. Well, next year . . . The culmination of all these efforts is now in your hands: a new 1965 Signet. There are more pages and more pictures, all combined within a new cov- er, to produce the “Biggest and Best” Signet ever. We have created it, and you’ve got it. We hope you like it. 110 CO-EDITOR Jim Hattum EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Doris Weigel “Jim, Jim, JIM. . . . EDITORIAL STAFF — SEATED AT DESK: G. Specht (Faculty), J. Cote (Seniors). ROW 2: G. Blank and D. The Question Mark, our school news- paper, entered its thirty-third year of publication plagued by financial diffi- culties. In a strong effort to bolster the sagging circulations, co-editors Doug and Steve Hellinger introduced a variety of innovations, including an editorial cartoon, colored print in the Christmas issue, and a guest column written by members of the M.H.S. faculty. Their success in airing controversial issues and in representing all shades of student opinion has resulted in re- newed interest in the paper, as evi- denced by the lively exchange of letters- to-the-editor. Next year’s editor, Jim Seaman, will continue to maintain The Question Mark’s tradition of journalistic service to the school. 112 QUESTION MARK CO EDITORS Doug and Steve Hellinger Serendipity marked its second year of existence with the publication of another provocative collec- tion of prose and poetry written by the students of Mineola High. This year Serendipity also sponsored competitions in poetry, essays, and short stories, open to anyone in or out of the club. The main purpose of Serendipity is to promote the literary arts in Mineola. At its meetings, stu- dents are encouraged to express themselves cre- atively in works which are then presented to the other members for analysis and criticism. In this way, the club hopes to develop in its members a mature and sophisticated sense of lit- erary style. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Susan Goldstein SERENDIPITY STAFF - M. Reilly (floor), J. Crimmins, J. Their subsequent participation in the Junior High School Orchestra and the years of study and practice have provided the experience neces- sary to play basic symphonic music in the Senior High. The ensemble includes standard orchestra sections of woodwinds, brass, percussion, in addition to the strings. Their program includes performances at sever- al school assemblies, as well as concerts outside the school. In addition, they participate in the Tri-School Orchestra, along with Roslyn and Westbury, and send a representative to the All-State Orchestra. The Thespian Society is composed of those who have shown superior skill and interest in the Dra- matic Arts. Here at Mineola, our Thespians have a busy agenda of plays and assemblies. Those in- volved in making these presentations a success consider the stage a second home. Taking part in these productions involves hard work and tireless effort, but anyone with stage experience can tell you that an audience’s warmth makes it all worth- while. This year’s two Thespian productions provide evidence of the efficacy of their labors. The AV-TV Squad is a vital element in Mineo- la's burgeoning television program. All of the pro- grams produced in the school have depended on the varied talents of the members of the Squad, including such functions as camera work, light- ing, and other technical activities. Under the direction of Mr. Ross, of the Junior High faculty, members shoot twenty-five rounds per week to advance themselves to the sharpshooter class. An important and rapidly ex- panding area in Mineola High School is its Vocational Electronics Program. It is designed to prepare students for the lucrative field of the electronics industry. From a simple basis procured in the sopho- more year the students of this course gradually obtain knowledge of electronics through hard and dil- igent work. They industriously study and repair circuits, check and wire televisions and delve into the complexities of modern elec- tronic equipment. Their aim is to become well versed in the art of electronics. 138 In the Auto Shop, students may learn all phases of automobile maintenance and repair. In the Sophomore course students work with small engines while learning basic skills. The Junior year course offers instruction in actual overhauling and small general repair work. Seniors do major repair work on their own cars. The school provides extensive equipment including en- ginescopes, wheel alignment pits and lifts for brake and transmission work. We tied a powerful Port Washington team which ended the season by defeating every other team in the league ex- cept us. We also completely swamped the previously undefeated Garden City team by the amazing score of 45-8. We snould be proud of our team this year if only for these performances alone against the two best teams in the league. Certainly everyone who saw the Garden City game will remember our aggressive offense and the success of the defense in holding back the G. C. team in their many futile attempts to break through. Additional honor was awarded to Mineola’s name as a result of this live game. After this game, WFYI’s Most Valuable Player Award was presented to Halfback Kevin O’Connor for his splendid job. Kevin received the Most Valuable Player Award from WFYI for his excellent performance in the Garden City game. He ran for three touchdowns and threw for one. This, however was only one of Kev's fine performances on the gridiron in 1964. He was a consistent play- er throughout the entire season and added a needed double threat to the Mustang backfield. Lee Schneider was the captain of the Mineo- la Mustang Football Team of 1964 and certain- ly he displayed to the Mineola fans the talent which earned him this position. Lee played guard on our offensive line and was one of our best blockers. He also played linebacker of the defensive squad and had a knack for making the big tackle on the crucial play. This fine all- around performance was recognized by the league coaches, and Lee was named to the All- Division II Team. A salute to two deserving grid- iron stars of the Mustang Football Team. 146 J. A sport that has shown increased popularity in Mineola High School is that of Soccer. With a final showing of 4-5-3 the soccer team found itself in fifth place, a tremendous gain over last year. Having finished with one of the best records they have ever achieved the team is anxiously looking forward to an even better record next year. The only major loss the team will suffer will be that of Ed Egan who received the honor of All North Shore Goalie. However, many of this year’s players will return to the field again next fall for a hopeful string of victories. The team gained added incentive this year when they trounced their most important rival Port Washington with a score of one to noth- ing. Port will more than likely come looking for blood in next year’s game. Our soccer play- ers, however, intend to be ready to add anoth- er defeat of this strong school to their record. 150 Mike Egger lines up the ball. The Varsity Tennis Team, calling themselves The Indelible Ones,” demonstrated a fair share of their prowess on the court and brought home a 7- 7 record. Leading the way was Bob Bleiman, first singles, who did an exceptionally fine job in the second part of the season. Gary Damon, second singles man, performed brilliantly all year and came in with an amazing 10-2 record. Craig Wol- ters and Larry Hutchison led the doubles team which included Richard Zinober, Russell Meyers and Steve Williams. Highlights of the season were sparkling defeats of Island Trees and Division Avenue. TENNIS TEAM — KNEELING: G. Damon, R. Murphy, R. Linkens, L. Hutchison. STANDING: R. Zino- ber, L. Robinson, T. Jim Tulley, Jack Tierney and Bob Rozzano were back again for another season. The future of the team lies in Larry Jones, Tom Kennedy, and Bill Devore with freshmen Billy Davis and Art Wehenkel showing great promise. If all goes well, we can look forward to a great season. THE OPENING FIVE — (COUNTER CLOCKWISE): R. Moore, R. Spizuko, L. Jones, T. Bla- zak, T. Polumbo. To fans conditioned by the impressive victories achieved during the 63-64 season, this year's record of two wins against ten losses in league play comes as inevitable dis- appointment. Unquestionably, the Basketball Team has sorely missed the services of the phenomenal Bill Corley and his teammates, Bob Szigethy and Ira Randolph. To those who have closely followed the team, there is an explanation for this season’s showing. Coach Gehrke, with an eye to the future, has emphasized the rebuilding of the team. To this end he has consistently led with the younger players, thus providing them with valuable experience. Paced by returning lettermen Russ Moore, Larry Jones, and Stan Kowalski, the team has played a tenacious and hus- tling kind of game. Sophomores Rich Spizuoco and Tom Blazek began to show the potential expected of them. With four of these five players returning next year the prospects look bright for a return to the winning tradition. 156 Mr. Gehrke, Varsity Basketball Coach. The Intramural Basketball program achieved an unprecedented popularity this past season. More than one hundred players participated, forming a highly competitive league of nine student teams and a tenth composed of faculty members. The success of intramural basketball is indica- tive of the widespread interest in the other intra- mural sports. The intramural program affords many interested and highly talented players an opportunity for bloodthirsty competition not pre- sent in regular Physical Education classes. At the same time, the players are not required to put in the long hours of practice demanded of Varsity and J.V. men. One of the distinguishing features of this year's intramural program was the enthusiasm it gener- ated among the student body, at times even rival- ing the interest in the Varsity teams. While intra- mural football and baseball were also marked by this renewed student interest, the basketball games attracted the largest numbers of specta- tors. The dramatic highlight of the intramural bas- ketball season was the game at the Senior — Teacher Night, between the All-Stars, composed of representatives from each of the nine student teams, and the faculty team, the Forget-lts, which had placed second in regular league competition. The hard-fought struggle was won by the All-Stars and the aggressive and fair-minded spirit in which the game was played is typical of the intramural program at Mineola. THE ALL STARS — KNEELING: E. Exceptional team members were Mat Brewi, who wrestled in the 168-pound class, and placed second in the North Shore Tournament; Bill Spohr, in his second year in the 123-pound class, finished third in the North Shore Tournament; Steve Kempf, and Rich Guori- glia. Other find starters were Gene Harned, Stan Chelluck, Ralph Bronk, Dan Gervat, and Tom Fau- ser. Although this was a young wrestling team, this year’s record was greatly improved over last year. The past several year's have seen Mineo- la’s emergence as a formidable lacrosse power, and the 1965 Lacrosse Team has continued in this winning tradition. With the graduation last year of several out- standing players, the Mustangs at the be- ginning of the season were hard pressed to match last year’s second place finish. However, with such top men returning as Ed Kenny, Kevin O'Connor, and Russ Moore, Coach Kuchinsky’s stickmen contin- ued to devastate most of their North Shore competition. The other returning lettermen, including Seniors Stan Kowalski, Ed Egan, Pete Hicks, and Bob Riggio, also contribu- ted to Mineola's powerful attack. This fine rec- ord was achieved by maintaining a team average of 891 points out of a possible thousand. The high- est score of the year was 192, out of two hundred, shot by Harold Harris against Garden City. Harris, along with fellow seniors Ed Miller and Wayne Rogers, were consistently the top shooters for the team. Gary Damon bowls another strike. The Mineola Bowling Team posted a successful 7-5 record, earning themselves second place in the North Shore League. Leading the team were Captain Gary Damon and Jody Dorr, both with 180 averages. The Leader Corps Cadets, one of the most elite groups of girls in the school, demands a very high level of performance from its members. The group, consisting of girls only, choreo- graphs its own routines under the guidance of our gym teacher, Miss Krai, and practices these dances weekly during November and December. The hard work of these girls during the year was appreciated by their fellow students at various performances — assemblies, Girls’ Week, and our annual Broadway Revue. MODERN DANCE — SEATED: M. STANDING: N. 170 There is a simple explanation for the annual week of bleary-eyed exhaustion on the part of Mineola girls, as well as for the frustration and exasperation of Mineola teachers — it is merely Girls’ Week. Under the sponsorship of the Girls' Athletic Department, this year’s Girls’ Week included those activities which have become traditional: the Father- Daughter Night for underclassmen: the Mother-Daughter Banquet for Seniors; and, of course, that wild, frenetic evening of climactic competition known as Sports Night. This year the girls of the Senior Class repeating their fine performance of 1964 which had almost secured them an unprecedented victory as Juniors, swept to a smashing triumph over their nearest competitors. Needless to say, several hundred Senior boys roared their delight from the stands. 171 :mna BOOSTERS Mr. and Mrs. John Andrew George and Jeannette Baffa Mr. and Mrs. William Benson Dr. and Mrs. Solomon A.
