Foreword The movie, Around the World in 80 Days, ’ was the inspiration for our yearbook. The pages of the Sig- net are designed to depict the swiftly changing scenes and broad- ened experiences of our lives, but for the Class ©f I 960, the journey does not conclude with the final page of the book. It begins. The I960 2 3 DEDICATION The Senior Class of Mineola High School dedicates this, our yearbook, to a man who has been both friend and advisor to us all, Mr. Ben Wallace. Through our years at Mineola he has been our con- stant guide and inspiration. His continued search for knowledge during this past year has inspired us to do likewise. By furthering our learning, we hope that we may also find rich and rewarding lives in the future. Our heartiest thanks to you, Mr. Wallace, and best wishes for continued success. 4 Board of Education The Board of Education plans our passage through the school year. The Board, the policy making body of the school system, has the power to determine what courses shall be taught, how, when and where they are taught, and who are to teach them. Our local School Board governs School District 10 as set up by the state. Therefore, the members of our School Board are state, not municipal officials. The Board thus acts for the state in determining educational policies. The Board is the legislative and judicial body of our school system. It plans the school program for the year and judges such matters as may come before it. The Superintendent serves as advisor to the Board and carries out its decisions. There are three officers appointed by the board: a clerk who keeps the meetings,- a treasurer, who is the fiscal officer of the district; a counsel, who is the legal advisor and represents it in any disputes which may arise. Since members of the Board serve without pay, they deserve all the commendation the school and community can give them. SEATED: Dr. Ernest Michaelson, Joseph L. day, Mrs. Frederick A. Kothe, Vice Presi- Besosa, President. STANDING: Cyril Holli- dent; Walter H. Hock. 6 SEATED: Dr. Raymond Ostrander (Superintendent of Schools), ING: Dr. Thomas Marshall (Administrative Assistant), Mr. John Mr. M. J. Rudner (Assistant Superintendent of Schools), STAND- Seiferth (Director of School-Community Relations). Administration The Administration of the Mineola Public Schools is directly responsible to the Board of Education. It is their duty to see that the policies of the Board are carried out in the proper manner. The Administration has taken a deep interest in our affairs and it is their aim to help the school system and the students as much as they can. Dr. Ostrander and his assistants are men who serve us unfailingly and who strive to give each student an opportunity for educational advancement. The Senior Class of Mineola High School wishes to thank the Administration for its fine leadership through our high school years. 7 Mr. Levine Mr. Herbert Levine, acting prin- cipal of Mineola for the year 1959 -1960, has done a commendable job of keeping Mineola running smoothly. He is a serious, hard- working man who has given him- self whole heartedly to the better- ment of Mineola's students. Among Mr. Levine's interests are stamp collecting and boating. He enjoys listening to modern jazz al- though he confesses that he does not have too deep a knowledge of it. Mr. Levine is an enthusiastic ad- mirer of colonial restorations, and has spent many vacation days visiting New England towns and monuments. Mr. Knickerbocker Taking over Mr. Levine's former position as assistant principal is Mr. Robert Knickerbocker, once a mem- ber of the Citizenship Education Department and popularly known as Mr. Knick. Mr. Knickerbocker's six feet, three inches of height once made him a high school and col- lege athlete. Today he is an avid baseball and football fan. We who were in Mr. Knick's classes will always remember the stimulators which he devised to increase interest in Citizenship Edu- cation. This year Mr. Knick's main duties rest in the entire school body instead of a few C.E. classes. We feel that we are most fortunate in having Mr. Knick as one of our ad- ministrators. 8 Freshmen When we pulled out of the junior high school sta- tion, we were signed up for a four year trip. Some of the trip tickets read Joy Ride ; others said Salt Mines. But no matter what, this safari promised to be a new experience. Carrying a full cargo of books, we chug-chugged up and down the three flights of stairs that separate No Man's Land from the more civilized parts of the building. At the Freshman Orientation Assembly we were read the Articles of War concerning proper be- havior and introduced to the extra-curricular activi- ties. Rest assured there was something for everyone from the beatnik to the egghead. We frol- icked at the Freshman Orientation Dance, ran our- selves ragged to secure top place in the Magazine Campaign, and reveled in MHS victories on grid and court. Our first year was packed with fun and excitement! FRONT ROW — P. Wilner, R. Road, R. Francis, G. Martin, R Sammis, R. Kaestner, J. Hegmann, C. Petersen, P. Seidman, V. Borelli, K. Giebel, J. Our expanding horizons became international in scope. In geometry we visited the ancient land of the Pyramids for a do-it-yourself lesson in constructing two congruent 'tombs'. World History gave us a guided tour through the cradles of civilization, the glories of Greece, Roman conquests, and the battle- fields of two World Wars. As biologists we traveled through the alimentary canal and cut a wide path through a jungle of frogs, worms, and grasshoppers. High school society welcomed us with open arms, and we became eligible to join the Choristers, Cheer- leaders, Rockeftes, and Biology Club. Suddenly we seemed to fit in so well, and before us lay the ex- citing prospect of entering the social world of the upperclassmen. 1 FRONT ROW — L. Seidman, N. Nolan, K. Conlon, F. Collier, S. For the first time we were allowed to organize as a class and wear school rings. We found chemistry a vast change from biology; it was dan- gerous! Will we ever forget the explosions that often rocked the laboratory and jolted our nerves? We sailed with Columbus to America, took part in the Revolutionary War, watched the U. S. grow in size and power, saw slavery abolished, and rode with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders up San Juan Hill. How glorious it all was! FRONT ROW — R. Meyka, J. Nichols, E. Lee, E. Pearsall, N. Senior year at last! As our engineer on this year's trip we had Garry Hitchcock, supported by a wonderful crew composed of Hsueh Ming Wu, David Sunderland, and Cecilia Bertoni. They guided our train around narrow bends and through dark tunnels to lovely vistas and novel experiences. As passengers, we now look at the log of the past wonderful year to relive the open houses, costume parties, and picnics, plus the Carnival, dances, plays, the Senior Dinner, and the colorful Prom. We recall those exciting football and bas- ketball games and our victorious teams. We re- member our devoted teachers who served as con- ductors on this journey and our classmates who toured with us. Now we are pulling into the station marked Graduation, but it is not the last stop. We only change trains to meet new traveling companions with whom we shall journey on to college years and chosen careers. Seniors SEATED: Elaine Stillwell, Barbara Littler, Barbara Kothe, Mary DeSorbo, Marian Pecoraro, Gail Zaiser, Judy Tho- man, Diane Biedenbach, Sharon Franquemont. STAND- ING: Mr. Nicholas Domoroski, Miss Ruth Burkett (ad visors), Barry Duman. 26 This year Garry Hitchcock has emerged from his vice-presidential apprenticeship to become President of the Class of 1960. Garry's sport interests consist of soccer, ice skating, and skiing. His hobbies are traveling and singing. For his two years of service Garry is wished lots of luck in his future career as an engineer. Although her roots spring from south of the border, Cecilia Bertoni, our Vice-President, displays none of the sleepy traits typical of the Land of MaTiana. She excels in sports and music, is active in her church youth group, and in her infrequent leisure hours en- joys knitting. Previously, Cecilia held office as Secretary of Mineola's G.O. She plans to be a math teacher. Hsueh Ming Wu derives her name from her birthplace in Kunming, China. Though characteristically patient, this Miss Personality hasn't let any grass grow under her feet. She dabbles in music and sports and is a member of the Rotary Club. Mineola is proud of this hard-working Secretary of the Senior Class. David Sunderland, a class treasurer for two years, plays golf and also is reputed to have the handsomest legs on the soccer team. His plans for the future include a college education and a career in civil engineering. 27 AFONSO, JOAQUIN Jack V. Baseball 3,4; Service Squad 2,- F. Baseball 1; J.V. Camera Shy Conrad, John Martin, Betty FOKUGW EXCHANGE SQUARE___Si™ 57 EXC Paddy McKee, our exchange student, hails from New Zealand, a little country half way around the world. Her friendly personality and cheery smile have made her one of Mineola's favorites. Paddy dotes on riding, sneakers, spare ribs, and the Kings- ton Trio. She fell in love with snow and tele- vision, which she saw for the first time in the U.S.A., and WE fell in love with Paddy! 58 Last summer Karen Hitchcock served as our ambassador to Germany. She enjoyed famous German hospitality in Rheine where she settled down to learn the Old World customs attached to European family life. She participated in the social and academic customs of the German youth, swam, played tennis, and saw the sights. One of her most enjoyable experiences was her trip down the Rhine where she saw much of the beau- tiful German countryside. Karen may be proud of her contribution in furthering Ger- man-American good will. 59 Big Kathie Barr Girls' State Representative Alan Johnson U.N. The only blemish to mar a perfect record was a 20—20 tie with Hicksville. The sweetest victory of the year was a 20—0 win over our arch rival. Garden City. The post-season all-scholastic teams selected by both the local and New York newspapers featured several of our players. Mr. Gehrke was named Coach of the Year by the Long Island Daily Press. The players to receive recognition for their outstanding playing ability were Larry Di Blasi, Jimmy Howell, Jeff Ketcham, Cody Copeland, Ernie Brodbeck, Roger Carpenter and Roland Stichweh. The J.V. team, led by the expert quarterbacking of Paul Popson, had a 7—1 record. The backfield, coached by Mr. Sokolowsky and led by the hard running of Bill Sbarra, Bob Julian, John Boykevisch, Bob Vetter and Tom Shimaitus, scored numerous touchdowns, resulting in one-sided victories. Popson's passes, which were hauled in by Bob Davis, netted 20—30 yards at a clip. Richard Bernardi and Mike Holliday were particularly outstanding on the line. Coach Hafner was proud of his team's performance. The freshman team had a fine 5—1 record. The only loss was suffered at the hands of Great Neck. Although the team was the first freshman team to lose a game in four years, Mr. Kuchinsky feels they show great promise. 78 Varsity Football Scores fieola.......21 Glen Cove............. John Healy, a first year man, was sen- sational in the goal. Jim Magyar, the most improved player, scored 4 goals. Coach Brittell was quite pleased with his first season and hopes for an even better record next year. Co-captains Mike Gumiela and Tim Bechtel 83 ROW 1: B. Kenny, J. Davidson, S. Tom Rothwell hurt his leg early in the season and was never up to par, but Jens Franzen provided a bright spot by placing twenty-first in a field of over 100 entries at the North Shore meet. TENNIS Mineola's racket men, in their first year of varsity competition, ran up three victories against five setbacks. Under the direction of Mr. Speed, the team placed fourth in the North Shore Division C loop. The first doubles team of Ron Montheard and Jim Garvey was undefeated, and the third doubles team of Phil Stuart and Mike Tauger had only 2 ties to mar their record. BOWLING The bowling team this year showed good potential but could not come through against rough competition. They did, however, post impressive victories over Port Washington and Farmingdale. Joel Davidson proved to be the iron man of the team. His high game of 221 and a high series of 525 were particularly outstanding. Bob Kenny also posted a 200 game. The team should do better next year. 85 ROW 1: Mr. Brittell, (coach); J. Meringolo; E. Fahey; D. Farrar; J. Scott; T. Fleming; C. Nielson; A. Merritt, (manager). ROW 2: R. Ekus; R. Sadler; R. Their 6—1—1 record was good for second place in the North Shore Western Division. The most impressive victory of the year was a 46—5 trouncing of Great Neck North High School. Art Merritt, always a tough competi- tor, was lost for the season because of a broken ankle. Harold Encizo lost the first scheduled season match of his three year wrestling career, but placed second in the county wrestling tournament. Both Dan Farrar, who beat an undefeated man, and Tom Fleming had successful seasons. John Scott and Joe Meringolo were two other stalwart seniors. Ralph Sammis, showing great ability as a freshman, is the North Shore 104 pound champion. 87 Varsity Bob Howell, Artie Katz, and Bob Buckridge. Our varsity basketball team swept to the North Shore Division One champion- ship with a 17—1 record. The only loss was at the hands of Garden City in over- time. The team won the first annual Christmas tournament at Calhoun High School by defeating Floral Park and Calhoun. A new school record for scor- ing was established when 94 points were scored against Hicksville. The 17 game winning streak was also the long- est in Mineola's history. Big Artie Katz with his famous jump shot had one of the best shooting percentages in the league. Ronnie Alfiere's fine playmaking and the scoring ability of Tom Wilenski, Pete Calamo and Rollie Stichweh pro- vided many thrills. A strong bench was headed by Tony Annunziata and Bob Howell. Pete Emig and Paul Popson provided the scoring punch while Ed Grimm's fine, all-around play was noteworthy. This was a fast and high-scoring team which should do well with the varsity next year. Emphasizing team play and developing players for the J.V. and varsity teams next year, Mr. Gillooly's freshman team posted a 6—6 record this year. Led by Ren Graber, Ken Popson and Tom Mohrman, the frosh went undefeated for the second half of the season. They defeated two of the top teams by upsetting Garden City and Westbury. Baseball The Mineola Marksmen ranked high in North Shore competition this year. Out- scoring teams from both the North and South Shore, the Riflemen came out tops in this year's Sectional Tournament. Led by Dennis Foreman's two high scores of 189 and his 183 average, the Mustangs held a team average of 900 to make this year one of the highest scoring seasons in Mineola's history. To finish the season right, the Marks- men fired a 930 in their last match to set a new North Shore record. Only a poor start prevented the Mustang baseball team of last year from making the tournament. They lost the third position slot to Port Washington by the flip of a coin. The season had many thrills. Tom Wilen- ski pitched a no-hitter against Great Neck North and Karl Wildermuth's late inning homerun beat Farmingdale. Bob Rivero was named to the North Shore All-Scholastic team as a shortstop. Jimmy Howell at Cornell University The track team consisted of only two members last year. Jimmy Howell, who is the New York State Pole Vaulting Champion, set a new track record of 127% at the NYSAA track meet held at Cornell University last June 6. Before qualifying for the state meet, Jimmy won the Port Washington Invitational with a vault of 10'6 , the North Shore Finals with, 11'6 , and the County Finals with 12' even. Tom Roth well ran the quarter-mile as the other half of our track team. His best time was 53 seconds flat. He also qualified for the North Shore Finals. 93 ♦ ROW 1 — B. Buckridge, K. Ruckh, J. Last year's lacrosse team turned in the most successful record in the school's history. The team had a 7—1—1 league record and an 8—2—1 overall record. When the all- scholastic balloting took place last June, Mineola was represented by Bob Young, Nick Gordon and John Scott. Bob Young set a school record of 37 goals scored for the season, and he was voted the league's Most Valuable Attackman. Nick Gordon, a defenseman, and John Scott, the goalie, provided some of the most sparkling de- fense in the league. The high-light of the season was the game with Sewanaka, which ended in a 5—5 tie. 94 Lesher lies sprawled on ground os Nidecker runs by with the ball. Girls’ Sports ROCKETTES: M. Delaportas; D. Struss, M. Bender. STANDING — J. Spohr, V. Young, M. Nesbitt, P. Williamson. Until 1933 Mineola High had only one cheer- leader — a boy. Miss Gregory, head of the girls' athletic department, then decided that Mineola should have girl cheerleaders. She organized a cheerleading squad and taught them some of her college cheers, some of which are still used today. She headed the cheerleaders until 1955 when Miss Hughes took over. For over 25 years our cheerleaders have been doing a wonderful job. They practice faithfully twice each week. The girls make up many of the cheers themselves or get ideas from a cheerleading hand- book. For years to come we'll remember their yelling — We're from Mineola, and no one could be prouder. 96 Go, Mustangs, Go! . . . Once again the cheerleaders have led the school in cheering the football and basketball teams to victory. Out on the cold field or in the stuffy gym they are always there, ready to raise the spirits of players and spectators alike. 97 SENIOR G.A.A. ROW 1: K. Koeppen, C. Franz, M. DeSorbo, J. For a week she wears a dog collar as part of the initiation. After she has become a full-fledged member, she must con- tinue her good work by participating in at least three intramural sports a year. The girls are proud to announce that the girl they sponsored at camp last summer benefited greatly from her experi- ence. Since the project was such a success, it will be carried out annually. The Club met regularly this year covering such fields as try-out hints, make-up demonstrations, discussions on vari- ous phases of backstage work, and presen- tation of one-act plays. Radio workshop has given us another season of morning and afternoon announce- ments. The group also presented four short plays in honor of our national holidays. Membership is open to all students inter- ested in working with radio productions. RADIO WORKSHOP, SEATED: P. Purrell, P. Schir- ling, B. Ring, G. Seckler STANDING: G. Innes, R. Blazek, D. Awe, N. Under the skillful leadership of their co-editors-in-chief, Barbara Kothe and Nina Siegel, the Question Mark reporters have kept the student body abreast of the latest school news with such scoops as the sports scores and the re- sults of the G.O. election. Such special features as per- sonal interviews and odd bits of gossip were faithfully conveyed to us by the ?'s newest cub reporter, Milton Mustang. There is no pastime more enjoyable than reading all the Mineola news that's fit to print. Question Mark Staff ROW 1: L. Gould, P. Moore, E. Lee, K. Koeppen, M. Sybalski, J. Stroff, C. Oppenheim, S. Everyday, during 8th period and often till 5 or 6 P.M., members of the Signet Staff work to publish the yearbook. Accompanied by clacking typewriters and scratching pens, all industriously work on layouts, write- ups and art work to tie in with the theme. When the page proofs are returned for the first sec- tion, the excitement of accomplishment helps renew the staff's efforts to meet each deadline. We of the current Signet Staff, are proud of the book we published and hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it. SIGNET STAFF SEATED, J. Bruno, N. Dubin, F. Barry, STANDING, N. While meetings are in session all discussion is carried on in German. In addition to their many varied activities, the German Club's president, Bob Dornemann, has a well rounded field trip program planned, including trips to the opera and the West German embassy. Students in the Latin Club enjoy many entertaining hours in their meanderings through ancient Rome. There they learn much about the Romans and their civilization. Plays and skits are often on the agenda for the club meetings which help to dramatize Roman life. Other programs present games and popular songs sung in Latin. The Latin Club gives the students a better under- standing of the ancient people whose language they are learning. LATIN CLUB KNEELING: L. Veeder,- M. Friedmann; L. Lipman,- B. Scott; G. Sheerin,- M. Between contests Miss Fields keeps Math Team members hopping with tricky problems. Mr. Goldstone has undertaken the training of aspiring Math Team members. Math Club tackles the same type of problems as the Math Team. Math Club is also interested in other school activities as shown by their booth in this year's Win- ter Mardi-Gras. Did you know that chess origi- nated near the present Indo- Chinese border? Were you aware of the fact that it was later taken to Europe where it adopted a form of the European feudal system? To learn the intricacies of this fasci- nating pastime one should join the Mineola High School Chess Club. The present six members of this group meet and engage regularly in fierce struggles with other schools in the North Shore Chess League. It is hoped that these un- sung heroes will not become extinct because of lack of new members. CHESS CLUB - - - D. Sanders, R. Saxon, P. Jamgotchian, H. Wu, D. Levy, R. Scott. BIOLOGY CLUB SEATED: L. Rapp. Biology, the study of life, is a very complex and interesting field. Not only can one increase his knowledge about nature and its ways from the Bi- ology Club, but one also gains a great deal of in- sight into things that once seemed obscure and mysterious. Once a student has had the stimulating experience of being in the club, he will feel that he has experienced an adventure that he will never forget. The Chemistry Club, under the supervision of our new chemistry teacher, Mr. Berka, is an active group devoted to experiments in the field of chemistry. The main objective of the club is to give its members an opportunity to perform individual projects and ex- periments which they are unable to do during class. One of the highlights of the year was a trip to the Exposition put on by electronics corporations at the Garden City Hotel. CHEMISTRY CLUB ROW 1 — D. Sanders, R. Scott, H. K. Wu, A. Miller, F. They make baskets for needy families and help other chapters in- stall members. The local group also joins other chap- ters in various activities, such as their own bowling league. The Future Teachers of America seek to channel interested students into the field of education. By observing and studying every side of the field, the future teacher is better able to select the branch of education for which he is best suited. They meet annually with other chapters of this state-wide organization at a convention where the future teachers have an opportunity to exchange concepts and ideas. After the games, a dance and social evening make the occasion a memorable one. The evening of fun and excitement is usually held annually on Friday before Thanksgiving. This enter- taining reunion with old graduates is made possible by the members of the Publican Grads, an organi- zation formed to establish contact with Mineola alumni and to or- ganize and sponsor school activi- ties which include graduate par- ticipation. This year twenty-nine people are sharing the glori- ous feeling of being a part of the National Honor So- ciety. Knowing that one has filled the requirements of scholarship, leadership, character and service, each member proudly wears his or her charm or pin for all to see. Inductions held every February, are quite mean- ingful and recognize those students who have and exhibit outstanding qualities. ROW 1 — J. Paglia, M. Pecoraro, K. Barr, D. Gerbino, C. Franz, M.
