Zhe specialists who guide the students Mineola’s teachers are generally warm and human with a genuine interest and concern for their students, although for obvious reasons they sometimes try to cover this fact with a gruff or dictatorial exterior. Most of the students can easily see through this, and they know that if they are sincere, they can go to any teacher with almost any problem, whether technical or personal, and they will be given a sincere and honest answer. It is because of this that Mineola’s teachers will always have a fond and secure place in the hearts of the alumni. All the faculty’s work does not directly involve the students, how- ever. The many new and proposed changes mean a number of long meet- ings and a lot of just plain hard work. and the captain Mr. Wallace is a warm and friendly person to Mineola’s students. Many of the students feel that they know him well. They would be surprised to know that he can say the same about them. He is much closer to the stu- dents than many other principals could claim to be. Much of this easy manner with all types of students comes from his having been an Eng- lish teacher for several years. He has a serious side, too, that many students are unaware of. The responsibility of being the principal of a high school is a huge task, which requires a combination of humor, courage, diligence, and an often nec- essary sternness in making decisions and meting out discipline. Mr. Wal- lace is surmounting the problems of his office, while remaining a friend and counselor to the students. Mr. Wallace in his familiar position of directing the center hall “traffic”. 9
