the navigators of the ship The Administration of the Mineola Public Schools is directly responsible to the Board of Education, and the administrators are the ones whose duty it is to see that the policies of the board are carried out in the proper manner. The Administration serves also as an advisory committee to the board, especially in matters of curriculum, as they have a closer association with the various schools. At this time the Administration is working on a new and improved course in citizenship education. They are also revising the manner of testing the elementary school students in order better to relate all of their subjects and give a clearer picture of what the students’ ability will be in high school. For the high school student, the Administration is setting up a work experience program so that the vocational and business students will have the opportunity to do actual work in their chosen field and then dis- cover if that is the type of work they are suited for and will be happy in. The Administration’s aim is to help the school system and the students as much as they can. DISTRICT-WIDE ADMINISTRATION: Mr. M. J. Rudner (Assistant Superintendent of Schools), Dr. Ray- mond Ostrander (Superintendent of Schools), Mr. Thomas Marshall (Administrative Assistant), Mr. John Seiferth (Director of School-Community Relations). 7

Zhe admiralty...and The first recorded meeting of the Board of Education of the Mineola Public Schools was on October 13, 1868. Since that time the school system has expanded to include six schools, with a seventh in the planning stage. With the expansion in the number of schools the responsibility of the board to the students and the taxpayers has greatly increased since the problems of insuring proper education and opportunities for all students in our schools have become more complex. It is the specific job of the Board of Education to set up the policy to be followed in all of the schools and to plan an adequate, interesting, and acceptable curriculum for the vocational, the. aca- demic, and the business students. The members of the board are elected by the people of Dis- trict No. 10 for terms of three or five years. During this tenure of office they serve the district and the taxpayer to the best of their ability and judgment without monetary compensation. BOARD OF EDUCATION.' Seated: Mrs. Marie Dowling, Dr. Ernest Michaelson (President), Mrs. Margaret Kothe. Standing: Mr. James Barron, Mr. Joseph Besosa (Vice-President). 6

Zke exec. The Assistant Principal of Mineola High is Mr. Levine, who took the po- sition in October 1957. Since then his name has come to strike a note of dismay in the hearts of wrong-doing pupils. However, besides his job of assigning detention and otherwise disciplining students, he has other important duties. Mr. Levine is re- sponsible for scheduling assemblies, and fire and air-raid drills. Other duties are to arrange for substitute teachers, order supplies, and oversee the general maintenance of the school. His task also includes making various reports, which have a way of becoming more numerous and fre- Mr. Levine in the role of detention assigner. quent. So you see, Mr. Levine is not quite the tyrant he is sometimes pictured to be- — that is, unless the student has recently done something to regret. 8
