I HOME PORT... 2 s I G N E T 1959 Published by The Senior Class Mineola High School Mineola, New York FOREWORD The sea evokes many different moods. The sea is very much like us high school students. It is sometimes furious and violent, tearing, wash- ing away, and wasteful. At other times it is calm, gentle, almost com- passionate in its quiet movements. We are undergoing a great but strange metamorphosis. We are going, sometimes rapidly, sometimes painfully slowly, toward adulthood. High school will be the last protective cove for some of us, for directly after graduation many will seek their for- tunes on the stormy seas of life. Others will have the privilege of going on to college, however, and continuing in a calmer atmosphere. However we look at ourselves, though, we can see a comparison with the restless, moving sea. Because of this, the SIGNET has chosen for its theme this year the sea. Since that time the school system has expanded to include six schools, with a seventh in the planning stage. With the expansion in the number of schools the responsibility of the board to the students and the taxpayers has greatly increased since the problems of insuring proper education and opportunities for all students in our schools have become more complex. It is the specific job of the Board of Education to set up the policy to be followed in all of the schools and to plan an adequate, interesting, and acceptable curriculum for the vocational, the. aca- demic, and the business students. The members of the board are elected by the people of Dis- trict No. 10 for terms of three or five years. During this tenure of office they serve the district and the taxpayer to the best of their ability and judgment without monetary compensation. BOARD OF EDUCATION.' Seated: Mrs. Marie Dowling, Dr. Ernest Michaelson (President), Mrs. Margaret Kothe. Standing: Mr. James Barron, Mr. Joseph Besosa (Vice-President). 6 the navigators of the ship The Administration of the Mineola Public Schools is directly responsible to the Board of Education, and the administrators are the ones whose duty it is to see that the policies of the board are carried out in the proper manner. The Administration serves also as an advisory committee to the board, especially in matters of curriculum, as they have a closer association with the various schools. At this time the Administration is working on a new and improved course in citizenship education. They are also revising the manner of testing the elementary school students in order better to relate all of their subjects and give a clearer picture of what the students’ ability will be in high school. For the high school student, the Administration is setting up a work experience program so that the vocational and business students will have the opportunity to do actual work in their chosen field and then dis- cover if that is the type of work they are suited for and will be happy in. The Administration’s aim is to help the school system and the students as much as they can. DISTRICT-WIDE ADMINISTRATION: Mr. M. J. Rudner (Assistant Superintendent of Schools), Dr. Ray- mond Ostrander (Superintendent of Schools), Mr. Thomas Marshall (Administrative Assistant), Mr. John Seiferth (Director of School-Community Relations). 7 Zke exec. The Assistant Principal of Mineola High is Mr. Levine, who took the po- sition in October 1957. Since then his name has come to strike a note of dismay in the hearts of wrong-doing pupils. However, besides his job of assigning detention and otherwise disciplining students, he has other important duties. Mr. Levine is re- sponsible for scheduling assemblies, and fire and air-raid drills. Other duties are to arrange for substitute teachers, order supplies, and oversee the general maintenance of the school. His task also includes making various reports, which have a way of becoming more numerous and fre- Mr. Levine in the role of detention assigner. quent. So you see, Mr. Levine is not quite the tyrant he is sometimes pictured to be- — that is, unless the student has recently done something to regret. 8 and the captain Mr. Wallace is a warm and friendly person to Mineola’s students. Many of the students feel that they know him well. They would be surprised to know that he can say the same about them. He is much closer to the stu- dents than many other principals could claim to be. Much of this easy manner with all types of students comes from his having been an Eng- lish teacher for several years. He has a serious side, too, that many students are unaware of. The responsibility of being the principal of a high school is a huge task, which requires a combination of humor, courage, diligence, and an often nec- essary sternness in making decisions and meting out discipline. Mr. Wal- lace is surmounting the problems of his office, while remaining a friend and counselor to the students. Mr. Wallace in his familiar position of directing the center hall “traffic”. 9 Zhe specialists who guide the students Mineola’s teachers are generally warm and human with a genuine interest and concern for their students, although for obvious reasons they sometimes try to cover this fact with a gruff or dictatorial exterior. Most of the students can easily see through this, and they know that if they are sincere, they can go to any teacher with almost any problem, whether technical or personal, and they will be given a sincere and honest answer. It is because of this that Mineola’s teachers will always have a fond and secure place in the hearts of the alumni. All the faculty’s work does not directly involve the students, how- ever. The many new and proposed changes mean a number of long meet- ings and a lot of just plain hard work. That strange and exciting new sphere that is the beginning of the mystical world of high school. How dif- ferent things are! From being the “top dogs” in Junior High it is a long way down to the bottom of the heap, but some- how it is felt more as a real advancement toward the adult world, and it is not a hard step to take. New friends are made at the G. O. Freshman Orientation Dance and then throughout the rest of the year, too. It's wonderful being a freshman! First Row: K. Collins, C. Dann, K. Hattum, P. Harned, C. They made the top of the heap so quickly it seems. Where did those last four years go? A slight feeling of panic. Those col- lege men and women are so much older. Was it only last year they gave the Prom and ordered the last of the class rings? Do they remember what it was like to be freshmen, bobbing around like a dory on a choppy sea? There are so many treasures stored in their hearts: the Big Night of the Prom, the misty and unreal feeling in cap and gown, receiving their diplomas. With this clutched tightly, they now must set their own course on this sea of life, wherever it may lead. Each summer a student arrives to spend the year with an American family and attend our high school. This year our lively exchange student is Ina Dutra from Brazil. Ina tells that on the boat on the way up to New York she was ter- ribly homesick and wanted to go home, but when she saw America and her American family her worries fled and she felt right at home. She fitted into our school life with a flattering ease. She likes orange juice, bermudas, and knee-socks; she loves to go shopping in department stores and to see Broadway shows. She loves Mineola and her classes, especially humanities. And Mineola loves Ina. Left: Ina with her mother and sister. Below: Her Christmas party, (riven by American friends. Right: Ina with her American “sister,” Sue Tauger. 56 Top: Lorraine with her Danish “family.” Bottom: Some scenes from Denmark. In the other half of the program, Lorraine Struss spent the summer in Denmark with a Danish family. Her trip started off with her taking the Regents exams during the crossing because of the early departure date. Once ashore things looked up and she reported that she had a warm welcome and a wonderful time everywhere she went. She made new friends, saw the sights, picked strawberries, and found it hard to leave her summer “family” when it came time to return in September. Judy Scheff (Co-Capt.) Elaine Stillwell Janet Einhorn Marilyn Vetter We sailed into a rough season Led by Mr. Gehrke, now Mineola’s head coach, the Mustangs started the season with victory, but in the end had to admit to a los- ing season. Jim Grippe and Bob Rivero were the sparks, and Nick Gordon was left out only because of an arm injury sustained after the second game. Bob Young rated an Hon- orable Mention in the All-Scholastic Nassau Poll. It looks as if the Mustangs can count on some very good material for next season’s Varsity from this year’s J.V. Led by Rollie Stichweh, Ben Wright, and Pete Calamo, the J. V. turned in a 3 won-3 lost record against some stiff competition. VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES Glen Cove 6........................... The sore throats and tired arms were momentarily stilled. Only the eyes moved, darting from court to court and back again, back to the strangely lone figure in the center of the Mustang court. The lone boy calmly gauged the distance, tens- ed and sprang, releasing the ball like an arrow from a tight bow, swift and sure. A silent prayer went up. Then pandemonium broke loose in the Mus- tang bleachers! Our boys had done it again!! With their penchant for tight and tense games they carried the game into overtime and let the balance hang on a single shot—and came through! Throughout the sea- son this scene was often repeated. The away games were always thrillers, and the home games ap- peared to be almost jinxed during the ’58-’59 season. It was an exciting season with the Mustangs coming out in third place in the North Shore Section One, giving their faithful supporters some very memorable games. Tom Hase- mann and John Kasperski won firsts in their weight classes at these meets, as well as at the Section Eight Championships. Harold Encizo won a first at the NS League Championship Tourna- ment, and Art Merritt won a first in the Di- vision Tournament. The game of bowls is now played with ten pins and larger three-holed balls. Mineola has its own variety of mountain-men who make their thunder at the Sheridan “bowling green.” Tom Kuster is high scorer on the team for his second straight year. This year Tom has further excelled himself by bowling the highest score for any North Shore scholastic game. He bowled a 612 for a three game series. The individual scores were 226, 227 and 159 — North Shore’s best. Lacrosse is truly an American game. It was played by the American Indians for many years before Columbus set sail on his famous voyage. The Mustangs have done their part in upholding tradition, and no sport sea- son at Mineola would be complete without frenzied waving of sticks and arms that accompanies this game. The G.A.A. initiations are held twice a year, and proposed mem- bers sport dog collars for a week. This year G.A.A. is sponsoring a girl at a summer camp. Funds for the project were raised at the “Ber- muda Hop.” This is a really worth- while idea, and it may become a per- manent activity for the G.A.A. EXECUTIVE BOARD K. Warren, C. Bertoni, F. Lesher, D. Harrison, R. Stichweh, J. Grippe, M. Moles, P. Popson. Mineola’s General Organization evolved from the Student Council in ’51-’52. The first GO was made up of heads of organizations. A need for more student representation was rea- lized, and our present system of representation became effective soon afterward. Within the past two years the GO has realized three ideas long held by MHS stu- dents. First, a nick-name for Mineola High was chosen in ’58. Mineola is now known as the Mustangs. Second, a permanent school ring was chosen, and the class of ’60 is the first to wear it. Third, the Winter Carnival was held in February and was a wonderful success. The GO is also responsible for initiating the foreign exchange program in Mineola High School. The proceeds from the Winter Carni- val are to be used to help finance this program. G. 0. In the manner peculiar to high school papers. “The Question Mark” has valiantly struggled to maintain its self-support and in: dependence throughout a record high of ten full issues, boldly print- ing student letters and cafeteria “exposes.” Pictorial features—thanks to a newly purchased and badly need- ed Polaroid—were a popular addi- tion to the Birthday Wishes, Hi- Society, and of course “The Ques- tion Mark” exclusive Critique, by Damon. The Question Mark Cal- endar made its debut in this year, 1958-59, as did “Goblin’s Gossip,” and a new nameplate. In all, the year was a rather productive, imaginative one for “The Question Mark,” ending on a gay note with an all-inclusive sen- ior issue. Throughout the year the staff had the stalwart and faithful support of the advisors, Miss Ber- brich and Mr. Finch. and writing them aloud along the sand. The Signet Staff theoretically puts out the yearbook during their fifth period Writing and Publica- tions class. But to the amazement of the entire staff they found it couldn’t be done. Publishing the yearbook meant that many after- noons and evenings were spent working feverishly to meet dead- lines. This was done to the ac- companiment of clacking typewrit- ers and scratching pens. Getting “tapped” for membership in the Honor Society is one of the greatest experi- ences in the scholastic life at Mineola High School. Members are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and ser- vice. They are formally initiated at a sol- emn and impressive ceremony attended by all the junior and senior class members. The College Club was formed to help students choose colleges and apply for ad- mission to them. It also aids students in their preparations for the College Entrance Exams by previous tests given by the Board. COLLEGE CLUB First Row: M. Tobin, K. Barr, J. Barr, J. Scheff, B. Berland, L. Music has become an integral part of Mineola High. Some of our classmates want to become professional musicians or music teachers. Some enjoy music just because it is music. Mineola’s choral groups have ex- panded greatly. All participate in the Christmas Concert and at one or another assembly during the year. Mineola has also a fine orchestra, a marching band, and a much small- er dance band. These also participate during concerts and assemblies. The dance band and the orchestra usually provide the music for the Broadway Revue, Mineola’s yearly talent show. Of course this department could not be complete without the short- skirted, high-stepping twirlers who march with the band, participate in assemblies, and compete for medals with other twirlers. 96 Music was graciously lent to us. This year Mineola High School is exper- imenting with several advanced courses. If they are successful, they may become a per- manent part of the curriculum. One of these new courses is a humanities class. This class under Miss Berbrich takes the place of a regular English Four class. The course of study runs from the earliest writings of mankind through the subtle mys- teries of the Greek and Roman legends, down through Shakespeare, and on to modern lit- erature. The writings of every period are tied in with the known history and philoso- phy of the times in an effort to gain a bet- ter understanding of man and his strange, or sometimes beautiful, actions through the ages. This course provides the student with a good background in the classics, develops his reasoning power, and attempts to make him more tolerant toward others. Its aim is to encourage an alert mind to understand the present and an imagination to see into the future. 102 An entirely new type of course has been introduced in Mineola this past year. It is a two year practical nursing course, carried out with the cooperation of Nassau Hospital. During their junior year the girls spend the mornings at the hospital attending classes and doing necessary tasks in the wards. In the afternoons they take regular high school courses in English and history. They gain additional experience by working in the hos- pital during the summer months. In the senior year they go deeper into the theory and practice of practical nursing. At the end of their two year course they bid goodbye to “Mrs. Chase,” their almost con- stant companion, who is the stuffed dummy in the above picture. They then will take the state exam in practical nursing and become duly licensed practical nurses. Class time in practical nursing: Which connects to What?? 103 Tony Renderio showing College Math how it’s done, while Mr. Wanich dubiously checks some previous figures. Mr. Bentley explains algebra to some members of the Advanced Freshman Math class. 104 Two new and advanced math courses are offered to exceptional students this year. Under Mr. Bentley’s direction an ad- vanced math course for freshmen is being given. The students learn elementary alg- bra and go on into more advanced algebra and mathematics. By following this course through four years, these students will be the best prepared for college math that Mineola will ever have graduated. For seniors, Mr. Wanich is teaching an advanced math, actually a freshman college math. This course of study includes solid geometry, logic, and calculus. Though some students may feel that they’re fight- ing a strong current now, their first year of college math will be much easier for them to understand because of it. A half- year course covering logic and solid geom- etry, plus some advanced algebra, is also offered under Miss Fields’ direction. A few students in the Earth Science class get together over globes and maps. A special science class composed prin- cipally of freshmen, meets one period a day during the school week and also on Thursday afternoons after school. This is the new earth science for freshmen. Not only does this class study earth science with Mrs. Hitchman, but it also takes up biology with Mr. Cady, the theory of bal- ancing equations in chemistry with Mr. Bowers, and electrical physics with either Mrs. Hitchman or Mr. Bentley. All this and a little zoology too. 105 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Without the patient help of many people, it would have been impossible to publish the Signet.
