Through the eyes of the eight guides, you will recall teachers and classmates. The binoculars are also focused on special occasions, organizations, and sport activities. Without you, the students and faculty, there would be no book. You inspired the staff to work hard, you co-operated in making the pictures, and we hope you will use this book as a record of the 1955-56 school year. School is not just a word or building-it is a living, breathing mass of young Americans learning to live and work together . . . learning lessons from books and from the hearts and minds of others. As you turn through this book, heartwarming experiences will become unforgettable treasures, because the pages are alive with your pictures and the things you have done, so vivid that years from now you can look at The Grig, and it will represent Minden High School to you. These eight girls will take you on a tour through the nine eventful months of a school year at Minden High School. Acting as guides for the 1956 Grig are lseatedl Mary Nelson, Karis Robinson, Joan Andress, Margaret Powell, Sandra Carson, Linda Cox, lstandingt Jackie Batton, and Betty Sue Lewis. Q , . Looking back over those years makes me recall many changes and happy memories Our lovely new building, the new stadium, the new track, the added dressing rooms, and the new recreation room are just a few examples of physical changes that have taken place. These physical changes were made possible by the splendid co-operation of our Minden citizens, and to them we express our heartfelt thanks. Happy memories that l recall center around my pleasant associations with all members of our school family. This includes teachers, lunch-room personnel, bus drivers, cus- todians, and especially the students, lt is a pleasure for any school official to watch looys and girls grow into young men and women. During these four years it has been my privilege to watch a fine group of young students begin as freshmen and pass through the various stages of development to emerge as mature seniors. This, to me, is the great reward of teaching, And to our hard working Grig staff, our entire school family owes you a vote of thanks for another fine yearbook. W. W. Wlll.lAlVlS Mr, Williams v MRS. This is all well and good, but sometimes people are inclined to give more credit for awards of this type than for the scholastic awards. The Grig reserves a page each year for honors. These are not the honors that come from physical exertion, but these are the scholastic honors. Every person pictured on this page has been awarded an honor for some outstanding scholastic achievement. These honors should be very promi- nent in the minds of all, for they are won because a student really works to earn them. The honor page is not only for seniors, but for under- classmen as well. This page pictures each year the freshmen whose poems were accepted by the National Poetry Association. Each year the top ten students are selected according to their scholastic work. Other than the three pictured on this page, the honor students were as follows for l955: James Lynn Ford, Carla Faye Green, Elisabeth Heffelfinger, Donald Holcomb, Becky Jones, Linda Lee Mims, and Jackie White. The mythical forty-ninth state met in the fifteenth session in August, 1955, on the L. S. U. campus. The Minden delegation made quite a name for itself. The state office of Commissioner of Agriculture in both Boys and Girls States was captured by Edward Kennon and Koris Robinson. Committees at work. TUDENT , COUNCIL v ' All in favor say aye .... If while passing by Room 2, one hears these familiar words it is a good sign that the council is at work voting on a proiect such as the Sweetheart Ball, Citizen of the Month, Student Directory, Pencil Machine, or a Clean-Up Campaign. President Jack Moreland, also Webster Parish president, calls for volunteers from the 29 members to serve on the various committees which assume responsibility for each proiect. Members and officers of the Student Council are chosen by the student body in the fall and spring, respectively. During the season, officers, along with Mrs. Kirkley, council advisor, travel to state and parish council meetings. One of the most important projects of the council is the Citizen of the Month. At the end of each month three students are nomi- nated by the council and voted on by the student body. To be selected for this honor, one must possess qualities such as leader- ship, scholarship, and honesty. The Sweetheart Ball is another proiect that has become very popular with the student body. lt is a non-profit dance put on solely for the enioyment of the students. Only with the aid of the faculty advisors may the council function properly. Mrs. Kirkley and Mr. Williams are always on hand to give advice and guidance. Minden High School has every right to be proud of its student council and the work which it performs. Under the guidance of Mrs. Bas- kerville, it sponsors every year the observ- ance of American Education Week. The main purpose of this observance is to encourage parents to visit the school, and the Future Teachers act as hosts for the occasion. Other highlights of the week for 1956 were participation in educational pro- grams, posters placed over the city, and a display in a downtown shop window. The outstanding feature for all the mem- bers has been teaching at E. S. Richardson School at different times. Preparation of a Fair Booth, which received a ratingw Excellent--, also helped provide an oppor- tunity for training in the teaching profes- sion. Speakers, including ministers, school officials, and retired teachers, have been guests of the club. For leadership, efficiency, and initiative, the club gives special recognition to Patsy Winkle, Kathryn Gardner, Ann Mays, Sandra Owen, Cathleen Harper, Marilyn Haley and Annette Van Peene. Ralph Blake, Patsy Winkle, Sandra Carson, and David James tell the Kappa Gamma about future teaching. 65 1 wi 'S T. Each student works ten hours monthly in the Junior and Senior High School libraries. Members plan programs centered around books and reading that will help them to be more efficient library assistants and work toward being named Librarian of the Month, a coveted honor. Many times students who have gained experience in the high school library are able to earn extra money working as assistants in college libraries. Being a junior librarian may also lead to a career in library work. This field has many opportunities abroad as well as here in the local realm. FAIR PRINCESS The Bossier-Webster Fair and Forest Festival got off to a good start on the afternoon of October ll, 1955, with the longest parade in the fair's history. It is at the fair that mothers and aunts vie for blue ribbons on iams, and iellies, chickens and cakes, quilts and doilies. The juniors and seniors of the various schools are not left out in the excitement of the festival. They delight in selecting a princess to represent their school and ride in a convertible. Everyone looks forward to October's promise of a host of beauties who wend their ways from the parade to the Coronation of the fair queen. Minden High's representative for this year was Betty Rhea whose chance of being queen was in the hands of lady luck. Friday, October 14, hundreds of students laid aside books and assignments for the traditional Fair Day. Money saved for weeks for this special occasion was finally spent on such delicacies as cotton candy, corn dogs, and candied apples. The thoughts of these treats are always connected with Fair Day. 90 Miss M. H. S., Earlene Mendenhall, and Miss Junior High, Barbara Mendenhall, MISS . . . Another colorful event of the year is the crowning of the chosen beauties for Miss M. H. S. and Miss Junior High, The girls from each of the classes select a number of representatives to appear in this program. To emphasize the fact that all the beauty is not in high school, representatives from the junior high also appear in the program. Each girl, beautifully and tastefully attired, is judged on poise, beauty, and personality. The iudges, coming from near-by cities, often find it quite difficult to name THE one. This year the honors went to sisters. Earlene Mendenhall, a senior, and her little sister, Barbara, formed a pleasing picture. Mayor Goodwill placed crowns an their heads and presented arm bouquets. 9l 3 5 iq, Lf? ,H :: M '1:i1 l..,.1.. iff '51 T. , 'M- M 'vy9l ? 4 1 I Q , my , E y .,..., .- if--..V -Q-qw-vw w- .Q- F A vi. ,., .. 5259 if S lima' XV ' 7A W2 'Mi x V if . . For their excellent writing Jeannine Mobley, Linda Cox, and Cleve Taylor received trophies. Being vice president in l955, Minden worked with the president, Fair Park, to plan a most helpful conference. On the talent program given by the various schools were piano solos, vocal numbers, skits, and readings. Mrs. Harper and Mrs. Lyon attended the conference along with the students. 97 LOUISIANA SCHOLASTIC PRESS ASSOCIATION David James, linda Cox, Barbara Russell, Jim Johnson, Kari: Robinson, Jeannine Mobloy, Cleve Taylor THE WATER SHOW An event that is steadily growing in popularity at Minden High School and the surrounding communities is the annual water show. This attraction is presented each spring in co-operation with the Tidettes and Miss Hillard. Tryouts are held and practice starts soon after the second semester gets under way. About 65 boys and girls took an active part in the '55 presentation. Besides swimming, the show has a variety of singing, dancing, and comedy acts. This keeps the interest stimulated and gives the swimmers a chance to change and prepare for the next number. The '55 show lasted three nights, and each night brought forth a packed house. Other than the actual performers, there are many other students that help to make the show what it is. They are the lighting chairmen, the music chairmen, scenery designers, backstage directors, make-up committees, and costume designers. Then, too, there is the student director, who helps Miss Hillard plan and direct the show. This year, before the home performance, a portion of this show traveled to New Orleans. There they gave the program that served as the formal opening of the famous Audubon Park. They were also guests of the New Orleans Country Club for a short program. Later in the year, this same group appeared by request at Lafayette, Monroe, and Homer. X 5 T5 iiif X arse W' WN 1? .........,,N Q 1 --L-h..4....4, 9, -, 'S f-..., 'ff Q M I ',,,,,....-A ,, ,. Without all our friends, there would not be a Grig, for it takes many others beside the staff to get the book ready for delivery. Special recognition goes to Mrs. Lyon for her help everywhere, to Mr. Cobb, the engraver, Mr. Harper and Mr. Porter, printers, to Mr. Oliphant for conducting the ad sales clinic, to the Grig salesmen for doing such a wonderful iob, to Mr. Quade for taking pictures, to the students, teachers, and coaches, and Mr. Williams for their suggestions and untiring co-operation, to Mr. Fletcher for his aid in the athletic section, to Mr. Grambling for being alert with his camera, and to the business men for supporting The Grig. Each member of the Grig staff deserves a medal of honor for his, or her, efforts to produce a Grig of which Minden High School can be proud. Don Bloxom, business manager, Jackie Batton, assistant editor, Mary Nelson, Junior High editor, Sandra Carson, faculty, Betty Sue Lewis, athletics, and Perry Lowe, book sales assistant, are seniors who will not return to Grig work. Lovonne Frye, Junior High assistant, Joan Andress, book sales manager, linda Cox, organization, Joyce Humphries, copywriter, and Margaret Powell, preparing for editorship of the 1957 Grig, are iolly iuniors with much zest and zeal for another year of work. Carrol Ann Miller, a sophomore, has proved to be a faithful staff member by running errands at any moment. Looking back over the year, I find that work sessions every day were not boring affairs but were spiced with laughter and humorous events typical of any group who gets along well with one another. There was also fun with the Tide Talk staff at Leader- ship Conference and I.. S. P. A. Many people are inclined to believe that the Grig is worked on only at spare minutes. Nothing could be further from the truth. Almost every school night is given over to hard work, plus holidays and week-end afternoons. Staff members must give up school night activities such as ball games, plays, and other affairs, but the final product is the great reward for a few sacrifices. Here it is! I hope you like it!
