We believe in our school, and we love and appreciate those who have given of their time and energy to make our stay here a rich experience - worthy of preservation. Her teaching career has been devoted solely to the Minden Schools, and for many years she has been Assistant Principal as well as instructor in Latin and Mathematics. She is lovingly remembered by hundreds of former students, who have benefited from her store of knowledge and rare gifts of mind, who have been strengthened by her personal Christian faith, and who have enjoyed her keen sense of humor. It is with pride and love that we dedicate this volume to Miss Kuma Shealy, who is retiring from the teaching profession at the close of this school year. One glance tells the whole story. Minden is a growing city and the progress can be measured by the develop- ment of the schools. Minden's first public high school, established in 1897, occupied the buildings of the Minden Female College. ln 1907 the school was state-approved, and in 1910 a brick structure was completed, ample for all high school and elementary work. The next mile-stone of progress was the accrediting of the school by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges in 1921, a standard consistently maintained since that date. The years immediately following consolidation of schools within the parish brought marked increased enrollment and required a new building designed for high school work only. By 1949 the attendance justified the erection of two separate elementary school buildings in different sec- tions of town, and in 1954 this modern high school structure was first occupied. 1954 41 Student Band Director. ,M Ten Ample Work Space. Not only the new members of the faculty found a welcome, but also those who had shared the excite- ment of watching the bricks and steel form halls and classrooms. Actually, he began 31 years ago when he substituted tor a sick driver. This driver retired that year and the school board per- suaded Mr. Gamble to take the iob per- monently. Mr. Gamble soid he has never hod on accident in all the time he has driven. When asked if there had ever been any trouble on his bus he said he had o moderate amount, but that a person can't drive a bus for 30 years with no trouble at all. In addition, Mr. Gamble, in the past years, transported the band wherever they vvent. But novv, he drives only to and from school. His day begins ot seven in the morning, and his school duties end about tour in the evening when he retires to his farm and store. ln reference to the children and bus driving Mr. Gamble has this to say: l wouldn't trade these 30 years for anything in the world. Mr. Gamble has said he might retire at the end ot this year. Though we know he deserves a rest, vve are reluctant to lose him because we love him and vve'lI miss his loyalty ond faithtul devotion to our school. Have we changed! itil!!! - A585757 PAM H! The Crimson Tide had no players who won games single-handed. Instead, the Tide played as a well-oiled machine, with each member doing his specific part. Under the expert guidance of Coaches Doherty and Nation, the Tide's dreams of state cham- pionship materialized this year. lndeed, the team owes a great part of its success to these wonderful coaches. Without the Band, the Pep Squad, the student body, and all the loyal townspeople, the toot- ball season could not have been so successful. The Crimson Tide won the crown in the Big Six League of North Louisiana by defeating Byrd 5-2 in the final game of league play. Spirit ran even higher as Minden won four games and took the Northwest District Championship at Natchi- toches. In the State Playoff, the Tide won four more games before being crowded out of the State Championship slot by a l-O victory for Neville. Outstanding for Minden were Richard Grigsby, runnerup for the district batting championship, and pitcher Graydon Kitchens, who had a 4-O record in conference play. BASEBALL Minden Baseball Stadium.
