' VARSITY FOOTBALL Coach Merritt McKeel produced one of Milwaukie's greatest football teams in many years during the football season of 1943. Showing a great line and boasting a splendid backfield they swept through the No-Name League unbeaten and untied to become a state entry. They rolled up a total of 1,648 yards to their opponents 428, With their opponents scoring once plus a touchdown for a total of 8 points, the Ma- roons ran up a total of 139 points during the season. By defeating Newberg in the most thrilling game of the year Milwaukie won the District Championship and held the most impressive record in the state. The Maroons were eliminated from State Play by Grant in the last game of the season. They were hampered by the fact: that members of the team had been severely burned by unslaked lime in the Milwaukie- Newberg game in Oregon City. tg Q - Page ll T -Q Wexgan It Richmond Jensen PERSONNEL VARSITY FOOTBALL Clifford Snider .....,.,,.,,,..,.. BASE BALL The Milwaukie baseball team looked better than usual this year, although the team won little more than half their games. Inability to field caused the Maroons to come out of the short end of more than one close game. The one highlight of the team, however, was the pitching department, which had one of the lowest earned run averages in years. This was taken care' of by Les Palmer, Don Wright, and Martin Witt. The hitting was fair all season with the team getting their share of hits. At this writing, Don Gersbach leads the batters, followed closely by Rod Jamison. Those graduating from this year's team are Cliff Snider, right fieldg Don Gersbach, catcher, Bob Palmer, third baseg Bruce Ecklund, left field, and Wayne Phillips, infielder. ga.
