This relation of vassal to lord, translated into spiritual terms, places a great ideal before us. As the vassal depended for comfort and security, yes for life itself, on his lord, so do we, graduates of L. H. S., gratefully acknowledge that all spiritual and temporal blessings are the free and gracious gift of our Master. As the humble, grateful serf vowed everlasting fealty to his lord, so do we, graduates of L. H. S., pledge eternal allegiance to our God. Glass bong Savior! 'lt ff-5-H7 QV-na The Cllilass rupbecp NE DAY, on my way to the East, I boarded a train bound for Chicago. On the way I felt that something unusual was about to happen. I was not disappointed, for as I sat gazing out of the window, someone tapped me on the shoulder. Turning about, I was surprised to see my former classmate, Earl Juedes, a professor in a Chicago university, who specializes in the one great problem of all students, namely, to pass in all subjects without studying. In talking about our high-school days he told me that several of my former fellow classmates were also teaching at the University. Prof. Scheer is specializing in debate and argumentation as a means of stalling in classes, lX'Iarie Hahm is engaged in teach- ing the finer arts of giggling, Dorothy Dahlke is instructing the future typists in the use of the electric typewriter, invented by Roland Eggebrechtg Elma Brunsch is en- deavoring to make it simple for students to explain the marks on their report cards, and Gertrude Gross is the head librarian. When I heard this I immediately decided to remain in Chicago for the evening in order to visit the University. I had very little trouble in finding Wilmer, who told me that Clara Gade is teaching shorthand in the sign language to the deaf and dumb of the locality. That evening I went to a basketball game in the university gymnasium. Before the game I spoke to Paul Zurstadt, the coach, who teaches organ lessons during his spare time. One of his devoted pupils is Doris Hoffmann. As I watched the game I noticed that Mildred Rosenberg and Ruth Queste were two of the players. Between the half, Norma Schneider performed her daring acrobatic stunt-a triple backward flip on roller skates, an art which she had practised while at L. H. S. After the game I met Elmer Seefeld, the football coach at Padooka University, who has introduced a new system which requires a triple-threat man who can run- backwards, kick straight up in the air, and pass-out. The next day I boarded a train bound for Washington. At one end of the aisle, sitting on a large Seat, was Leah Martin, the famous dietician. She informed me that Edward Neumann was on his way to Africa to give a detailed report on the use of cabbage leaves as tobacco, Alvin Meyer was traveling aboard the same train. I went into the smoker and there found Alvin. He told me about his new appointment as teacher of German at Yale University. He plans to eliminate all dictations from the course for the simple reason that they caused him many a headache at L. H. S. Leah o:, i363 .jim . rm also mentioned that Professor 'fEinstein Stosick, in collaboration with Prof. Vollmar, is attempting to discover where the light of an electric bulb goes after the current has been turned off. These two professors are ably assisted by Bernhard Wrensch, who has given them invaluable information on their lifelong work. In a paper lying at my side I read to my astonishment that the Drs. Siefert and Hartig, well-known surgeons, had astounded the medical world with their new method of performing painless operations without anesthetics. They tell jokes to pa- tients, who laugh until they slip into a coma. While they are in this state the operation is performed. This method is highly praised by Anita Pohland, the head nurse at the lXIayo Clinic. Since I could find nothing more of interest, I retired to my berth to awake the next morning in Washington. I dressed immediately, left the train, and set out for the Patent Oflices. There I saw Elsbeth Dietz and Bernice Bunn, each seated at a large desk. They told me that Edgar Buerger, inventor of the Baby Austin, has secured a patent on a model known as the lllidget Special. This model can pass under ordinary automobiles and thus avoid traffic congestions. Bernice told me that Elizabeth Looysen and Esther Schoessow are secretaries to the President. Due to the thorough training at L. H. S., both are well adapted to the work. Then Elsbeth showed me a copy of a book written by Margaret Boettcher. It was based on the various adventures of Amanda Tiemann, a missionary in China. At Elsbeth's advice I went to the House of Representatives to see Roy Klug, the Speaker. I encountered him just as he was leaving the building, and he invited me to dinner. To obtain the attention of his family at the table, he uses a gavel. After dinner one of the children listened to a story given over the radio. The sta- tion announcer concluded the program by saying, And so, children, ends another thrilling adventure of Buffalo Bill as told by your favorite story-teller, Raymond Korntheuerf' Then we sat down in the living room and looked through a scrap book. The first familiar name was that of Esther Marquardt, woman successor to Paderewskig she rose to fame through her composition Discords at Home. On the opposite page Was a notice that Elsie Lessmann, Dorothy Schroeder, and Else Buenger were musical feature Stars on station HELP. Ruth Joers, Viola Boldt, and Bernice Kirschke, comediennes, added spice to the program. A little farther on came a notice describing the work of Ruth Kohlwey and Martha Hencke, social workers. Another clipping read zifi L371 mo Amee rm as follows: Many a young maiden's heart is beating faster these days, for Walter Nell, the golden-voiced baritone, is in town. He and his accompanist, Hildegard Schumacher, are the feature attraction at the local opera house. The next day I left for New York. Upon my arrival I entered a taxicab, to my surprise I noticed the words Norbert Behl, President, on the door. I instructed the driver to take me to the President's office. Arriving safely, I found Hugo Noennig, the millionaire gasoline and oil man, in conference with lNfIr. Behl. They were deciding whether or not to invest a large sum of money in a company which dilutes gasoline with water. Mr. Noennig has acquired his large fortune through the keen judgment of his secretary, Ruth Schmidt. These two prominent businessmen were withholding their decision until the advice of Lester Fuhrmann, President of the New York Na- tional Bank, had been received. hir. Fuhrmann has introduced a banking system which permits people to draw money on some other person's account. He has two capable assistants in the Misses Esther Dorn and Edna Kohlwey. I left the offices of Mr. Behl after inquiring about some of my other schoolmates. Hearing that Harvey Prahl was a designer of women's apparel in the beauty salon and fashion shop of Esther Jaeger and Esther Siegmund, I immediately set out to see them. On the way to the shop I passed a theater that featured Raymond Schultz, successor to Sousa, and Dorothy Engel and Gertrude Kienow, lecturers, on the important topic Why Study ? Upon entering Esther's Shoppe, as it was called, I heard the familiar voices of the two proprietors and that of Gertrude Kirst, America's foremost beauty expert. They were discussing the benefits and disadvantages of the backless bathing-suit designed by Myrtle Winkelmann and Gladys Walker. I made my presence known, and then ensued a vigorous conversation. When all topics of interest were exhausted, we decided to see the first game of the Women's World Series, since the opposing pitchers were Ruth Schultz and Leona Guenther. Then fate stepped in and cut short my little trip, for I received a telegram de- manding my presence at home the very next day. I postponed all my engagements and left immediately. R. K. Only in a superficial way is this true. ln the great world outside of school, one expects to find not only joys but also disappointments. Why should this not be true also of our little school world? Indeed both on the campus and in the classroom joys and disappointments meet us throughout our school life. Though the student thinks of campus life only in the light of unmixed joys, he does not so readily associate joys with the classroom. He may think only of embarrass- ments and fears that often result from poor preparation. The unprepared student will never experience the real joys of school life-confidence in one's preparation, satisfac- tion resulting from correct answers, and the encouragement that comes from a good grade. Another great joy, and by no means the least, comes from Christian fellowship- meeting old friends and making new acquaintances on the common ground of our Christian faith. ln our school this faith is nurtured in the morning devotions, the religious instructions, and the continual association with Christian teachers. However, our high-school life is not a continual round of happiness, for it brings with it also many disappointments and difficulties. Even with diligent and faithful study some of us may find it extremely diflicult to keep up with the class. Although such a disappointment hurts, a real benefit is often derived from it. The student may have learned to know himself and may be better able to choose that work for which he is suited. Disappointments of a different nature are those caused by misunderstandings among students. Very often through sad experiences we learn that our school is but a little world, containing many different characters. We learn that things done and said are of far-reaching consequences. Because of misunderstandings the best ties of friendship are frequently severed. How necessary it is therefore that we weigh our words before we speak them, and that we try to understand one another according to Christian love. Many more disappointments and difficulties could be enumerated in connection with this little world of ours, our Lutheran High School. These, however, should suffice to show that it is of the utmost importance for us to practice Christian faith, humility, and charity, for in this way we prepare ourselves for the larger and more complex world which we are now about to enter. To the Sophomores we will the gum that we parked under the assembly seats, providing they promise not to chew out all the wrinkles. To the Freshmen we bequeath our common sense and good behaviour. To lllabel Zellmer, Ruth Schmidt's popularity with the opposite sex. To Hilbert Seider, Hugo Noennig's ability to ask at least one question a day which the professors are unable to answer. To Skinny Scheibe, Leah 1l'Iartin's famous recipe for reducing. To Robert Jungbluth, Raymond Korntheuer's lllercury-like fleetness. To Esther Kloth, Elsie Lessmannis ability to chew three sticks of gum without arousing the professors' hunger for it. To Gertrude Pochert, Else Buenger's uncontrollable fits of laughter. To Harry Benz, Fred Vollmar's record in answering most questions in Physics. To Gerhard Vater, lllarie Hahm's innocfent face when caught at one of her mischievous pranks. To Henry Jahn, Roy Klug's success in stalling To Wilbert Jaeger, Wilmer Scheer's ability to arrive at school in one piece after taking that perilous ride in his car UQ. To Carl Winkelmann, Paul Zurstadt's inventive genius for excuses. To Clarence Kossert, Arthur Siefert's ability to sway his audience-with emo- tion ?-no, with laughter. To Amos Budahn, Lester Fuhrmann's inability to prevent that flush from creep- ing up behind his ers. To Herman Gawrisch, Elmer Hartig's success in causing the professors to dream of him-and oh, what a nightmare! Watertown Plank Road lliiss Chievous . . . ..... 00 Thirteenth Street NI. H. '32 .ENSB1 .l.T...................... 401 J . rm Ghz Elnp nf Mastery DEAS of joy and happiness are not uniform, but multiform, every one holding a view about it peculiar to himself. To one, joy spells participation in pleasures, the hoarding of treasures, the view- ing of art and of the beauties of nature, and the forming of friendships, to another, the full contents of joy are peace with God and man. However, there are few who possess one of the greatest temporal joys--mastery of a given task or subject. This particular pleasure is the prize of only those who faith- fully apply themselves to a difficult assignment. Such joy of mastery may be experienced alike in school life, in home life, and in business life. During schooldays the joy of mastering a subject is often diminished and dulled by the fact that the student is neither fair nor square in gaining his end. His class- mates may believe that he has reached his goal, but the student himself knows that he does not possess the real pleasure derived from a task well performed. Only through diligent and prolonged study can he earn this joy. In no mean measure the joy of mastery in school work is increased by the joy of victory over one's natural indolence and carelessness. As schooldays draw to an end graduation approaches. Graduation is indeed a meaningless ceremony to the one who knows that he has not truly mastered the subjects given in his course. He has studied with a careless attitude and has not derived the real benefit which the study should have brought him. However, for the one who has studied diligently graduation is an encouragement to greater achievements and continued mastery of tasks. In this manner the mastery of our school assignments heightens the spirit of happiness on the eve of graduation and also gives us confidence in our ability to achieve greater things after graduation. The happiness derived from diligent study may also be experienced in home and business life. If one has in mind the completion of a certain task and will not be at ease until it has been performed to his entire satisfaction, he is assured the joy of mastery. This joy, too, is heightened by one's mastery of the inclination to put off things. Thus we can readily see that a well-performed task affords one satisfaction and joy and is a service wellfrendered to one's self and to one's fellow men.- The surest way not to fail is to determine to succeed. -Sheridan. On December l7, at the American Lutheran Association auditorium, Professor Grothmann presented the Glee Club in conjunction with the junior-senior chorus in a Christmas cantata, The King Cometh. A part of this cantata was presented by the girls in the Christmas program held in the Industrial School for Girls on December 23. Here and there a Hitting shadow could be seen darting around corners or just appear- ing from nowhere. The reason for all this mystery? Very simple! It was Halloween. The corridors of Lutheran High hung heavy with mystery. Skeletons stalked up and down. Screams and shrieks were heard. You donlt believe all those things could happen? Nevertheless they did, for the senior class was holding a Halloween party. Gradually the party assembled. Every type of character imaginable was repre- sented. There were clowns, gypsies, pirates, Dutch, Chinese, and many other costumes. Before the revelry of the evening began, everyone was initiated into the ranks of ghostdom. A skeleton politely led his victim through the dark auditorium to the stage. Here one had to touch the remains of a cat. Then came the ordeal of the shocking machinefl Before leaving, one was moved to sympathize with the poor old lady who was weeping so bitterly that she showered one with tears. After the drenching all were free to go into the gym. Here fortunes were told, games were played, and a delicious luncheon was served. Later that evening, when everyone was sleepily leaving for home, one and all declared the party a great success. .laiszz W urnr literary Svucieties OR several years our school has sponsored literary activities. This year the faculty finally succeeded in placing literary work in the daily schedule. The Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior classes are each divided into two groups. The Senior class meets as a body. In one activity period a week a group meets under the supervision of a faculty member and conducts a program according to the funda- mentals of parliamentary law. Readings, free talks, poetry, comedy, and other num- bers form interesting variations of the program. Seasonal programs were arranged by the Senior Literary Society for the closing exercises before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The chief purpose of the literary societies is to help the individual overcome self- consciousness. Later in the business world it is too late to conquer shyness, and one's career might be seriously hampered by the lack of free expression and the ever- lasting feeling of his presence. We certainly feel that our literary societies are doing much for our students in helping them to develop that mental and physical poise which modern society ap- parently demands. ilahiw' Quill! ROPERLY speaking the Ladies' Guild is not an organization of our school, but its activities are such that we are happy to mention it in this department. When in February, 1930, sixty ladies, from Lutheran congregations, gathered in the school auditorium to organize a high school guild, they little foresaw that within a year the organization would grow to one hundred and ten members. The regular meeting of the society is held in the school auditorium every third Tuesday in the month. During the meeting an interesting talk is given by a faculty member. After adjournment the ladies go to the cafeteria where a luncheon awaits them. The Ladies' Guild has done much for our school. Bulletin boards have been placed in the class roomsg chintz curtains were made to brighten many windows, pictures were hungg and besides it has given aid to the dormitory and the sewing class. Just before Christmas the Guild held a Christmas party. Carols were sung, games were played, and gifts were distributed. A mother-daughter banquet was held for the Guild members and their daughters on April 25. We sincerely thank the members of the Ladies' Guild for all they have done for our Lutheran High School, and we pray that God may bless them and help them to carry on their work. 1.9.a2f?L l49l can 50 H .. -1-gji W K Y V f '1? n?Z..E,' V h,,,.,i f' --55-,., 3'-,5v.,.5., v-i k, hL1g!5e,k,3!:.',. .L win.. Approximately thirty enthusiastic foot- ball players responded. After a few weeks of hard practice, in order to limber up the body which had grown rusty during the summer months, the boys tested their strength with the Cudahy High School. This game turned out to be a victory in de- feat, for the strong opponents scored only seven points. Then, after another two weeks of strenuous practice, the team lost its second game to M. U. S. by a score of 18-0. These defeats only helped to raise a stronger and greater fighting spirit among the players. With these games in mind the boys traveled to Delafield, Wiscon- sin, where they trimmed the Lightweight team by a score of 7-0. A week later the blue and white squad swamped Whitefish Bay High School 32-6. This evened up the season's record with two defeats and two victories. Now came the final game of the season with the Northwestern Preps at Watertown, Wisconsin. The Preps got the jump on our boys during the early part of the game, but we completely outplayed the opponents in every line during the entire second half. Our team had but two feet to go for a touchdown when the gun went off, thus ending the game and also the foot- ball career of many a loyal player. The score at the end of the game was 20-13 in favor of the Preps. The class of '32 wishes the football team success in its contests in the years to come. Klug and Gawrisch, guards, and Grunwald at center were ready to hold the op- ponents' line whenever called upong and on the defense they practically broke up every line smash. In the backfield there was a well-balanced line-up. The quarter- back position was occupied by Al lleyer who, until he was eliminated from the line-up because of injuries, played a fast and intelligent game in every respect. At the right halfback position we had Scherbarth, a fast and slippery man, who seldom failed in his accurate passes and end runs, while at the opposite half was See- feld, a man on whom one could depend. The fullback position was well filled by Jaeger. When he hit the line, he hit it hard and was seldom stopped from making a gain. f'Hank Jahn, who took the left half position when Seefeld replaced hleyer at quarter, played a snappy game, especially in the line of carrying the hall.
