YOR 1926 LIM school l accepted hls offer and brought to fall thls vacancy Zella Whlte from cDl1lO .she was my mece and became head of my household How well she ucceeded as teacher IS known to all and l think those who knew her wlll bear me out when l say that l thmk she was a Grand good glrl and a splendid teacher She taught wnth me nlne years l00l lllft INN I0 1 ROW I Miss Mat Culbertson Miss Ida Boys M1 s Yella White and Mr C E Burt all were my asslstants the Hrst year and thlngs began to grow We wer crowded In all classes Mr Wilson fixed up the llttle room ln the thlrd story the cons of Temperance room and MISS Laura Bowling was Installed as teach But yet not room enough How l drd enjoy this crowding and growing When Mr C M Kung became trustee and the need of more room be tame again so pressmg he bought out the M sonlc Interest ln the bulldlng and we moved higher And when the whole lzulldlng was occupied every room full of young people and no HTC escape the Lrg stove ln the lower entrance ometlmes red hot l wondered what we would do had the fire got hold of th rxckety old stairway Well the fire escape was put ln and lt seemed as lf most of the nolsy part was done during school tlme When MISS Maude Ellls was made assistant ln the hugh school we thought that no more could be a ked for Among the teachers somewhat previous to that time were oe ,Jtevens Thomas Nadal Mlttle cnmlth Della McKee Al bert .Jmlley Erma lXordmyer l..l1.ZlC Booth and Delphla Dawson XNUI I' PKI Although the work was of a strenuous character l enjoyed lt every hour The County Board of Education adopted a course of study and we were ask d to put lt mto effect Latin was NOT an electlve study Every boy and glrl took Latin and l suspect some of them dld not enjoy lt l desire here to re nate one Instance of my experlence m putting thls rule mto effect A young fellow brlght and hnely drsposed told me thls My father says he will declde what l am to study ln thls school and lf he cannot he will take me out of school and wlll send me where l can take what he wants me to study l told hlm that l should very much regret his leavlng now but that l would wrlte his father a note and l thought xt would be satlsfactory all around 0Il IN Nl Url l wrote the note and recelved a scorcher ID reply and bade the boy good bye at the door l-le left not very well pleased at the turn of things You see l was carrjlng out orders and Latin was not elective Well the ctool went right on and ln a few days the boy came back took Latin was one of my best boys graduated wlth hrs class went to DePauw graduated there has become very well krown m his Western state and wlll dellver the I4 an-nnn +g , C u C 4 A q . . . . I dau Iter Norah taught IH the same dlstrlct It was called the .Jtrxngtown hool l taught the next year at C rmgtown and then began a five term period at the IVlclVl1Illn school ard on Aprll I7 l877 I was married to o epl me McM1Ilm The next year I was prlnclpal at Raleigh where I succeed d Mr T KltCl'ln a splendld tfacl er wlso was the first teacher ln the 6l'St onsolldated school ln Rush County One of tlse ate upermtendents of ln cllana said that Mr W C Hall the trustee of Washlngton township at that time was the real ploneer ln the great wave of school consolidation that has wept the whole country l remalned at Raleigh tlll une ISSI when l was elected County upermtendent l was elected and sworn mto ofhce two weeks before my school was out so l used to SUTPIISP some of my friends when I told them that l taught one time ln a school ln which the County permtervdent came every dav for two weeks Then for a period of slx years l resided ln Rushvllle My predecessor as County uferlntcndent was Rev B Blount and my successor was Wall S Meredlth I XINI RSI XII Xl IX XNlll'R50N IOXNXNIIII l dnd rot Lnow the geography of Rush County as well then as l clad later Townshlp at Uncle Wllllam right s wl o was then township trustee He had voted for me as had also every trustee ln the county I was elected three tlmes but never agam dnd I get all the Votes for the second time there were seven Democtar trustees and five RCYUJIICHHS Iut two Democrats vot ed for me The thlrd tlme was slx to slx The Repuollcans all voted for me nd the slx Democrats voted for Prof Graham one of the fmest men ln the whole county hut the County Auditor famlllarly known as ack Gowdy cast his vote for me That was close shaving I' XRI Y XIII RUY Xi Ql XIXTXNLI S When I first vlslted the Mllroy school George Wyatt was prlnclpal The next year It was am lnms Both were fine men and good teachers Then fame W Ball On October 24 I882 Mr Ball had 44 pu'J1ls pres nt Mrs I egg had 39 and Marcus Fisher 2I MISS Vle wam was a teacher ln the Vlllroy school ln I883 4 with Mr Ball and Mrs Pegg ln I835 Mrs Vle Barton was a teacher with Mr Ball and Mrs Pegg I' 1 XXDIUIIFX Sfll For I885 6 Mr E. Polley and wife together with Mrs .1 P c onstltuted the faculty of the Mnlroy schcols This was called the Pegg and I olley school Mr Polley remained untll after l had closed my omclal con nectlon wlth the schools ln l887 l tauglat at Cine s school and llr D I..
