' BETTER DAYS TO COME A blanket covered the earth last night With soft, white patterns of snow. It left the world all glorious and bright, Making everything look aglow. ' The sun burst through when spring rolled 'round, And melted the blanket of snow. It left in its place the frost-filled ground, And the March winds began to blow. g April showers thawed the earth, Bringing flowers in glorious arrayg ' The world was filled with laughter and mirth. Yes, those were the happy days. HIIHJHKHMFIKIOIIIUIUKIIOKSKJIUIOKHkbiklkiirvkilflklklkikififilkivilifllfvklkfkilvk The seasons still pass on, But gone is the laughter and mirth. Each day there are millions who dieg These are the proofs of Democracy's worth. This is the price we all must pay ' To win our freedom and peace, So once again we will see that day When all the wars will cease, Priscilla Stevens 'uh THE LITTLE BROOK One day I stopped to watch a little brook Gurgling as it went on it s way. It lingered for a moment and seemed to look Up at me, and then I heard it say, NI am nothing but a little brook. Mother Earth has told me to be trueg s I must water every little nook, p Never to stop and play as others do. She said for me to follow this narrow path Until I reach my journey's endg She said no matter what may be my wrath, Not to forget that I am earth's friend. I'd like so very much to stop with you-and play, To dance, to run, to jump and to sing, But, instead, I must be on my way To reach my journey's end--the river king.' Richard Sonier 'LL

Lx K t ASHES . Ashes, like that which is dead, Once sparkled and glowed With the ardor of life, But now lie lifeless and dead Like a heart from which Love has fled. T Ula Robinson 'Ab DILIGENTE On a pleasant day last fall, I watched a pair of gray squirrels Busily carrying acorns To some secret hiding place.'W They had previously Stored them in the hay mow, But now they were moving them Nearer to their home. I saw how diligently, 'Faithfully, they kept at their task. I knew then, ' That I could profit By their example. A Avis Mitchell 'hh i ON WEATHER Weather is a child,-- And yet fullfgrown. Her moods are varied And ever-changing. She has sullen moods4- Bleak, stormy, and unapproachable, Anger dominates her at times ' And she spitefully spits snow and hail, Rages madly and shrilly screeches. Then, as a wilful woman, Changes her mind and smiles once more, Deceitful and wily, she curries favor Until her wishes are fulfilled, And then treacherously storms again. A Beatrice Lyford 'LL
