Accepting the award for excellence in education, from Madeline Will, Assistant Secretary of Education United States Department of Educa- tion, Washington D.C., is Principal Jimmy Scales. On September 28,1984, the Unit- ed States Department of Education recognized Millwood in an assem- bly for Excellence in Education. Millwood is one of only four sec- ondary schools in Oklahoma hon- ored. There were 555 Schools na- tionwide nominated for this award. The schools were rated on what the Department of Education terms the 14 attributes of successful schools. We were visited for a close-up rat- ing period. We were also rated by the scores of the Standardized tests. 2 • Theme STATE OF OKLAHOMA OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR 212 STATE CAPITOL BUILDING OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA 73105 GEORGE NIGH Governor 405 521 2345 July 27, 1984 Millwood High School Mr. Jimmy V. My congratulations for a job well done! GN md Theme • 3 4 • Student Life During Honor Roll reception, recipient Dawn West shares cake with tiny tots. Student Life Student Life ... is easy to say, but not easy to live. As a student you have several responsibilities: homework, extracurricular activi- ties, band practice and cheerleading practice-to name a few. In order to succeed dedication is the key. Dedi- cation plays an important role in student life. With dedication we have students on the Honor Roll, Superintendent's Cabinet, National Honor Society and Oklahoma Ju- nior-Senior High School State Honor Society. Students are greatly encouraged by the faculty, staff, and administration to achieve ... Welcoming guests at the Excellence in Education pro- gram are Delecia Stevens and Andrea Holman. One of the library activities other than read- ing books is shown by Blain Cooper. Student Life • 5 Time Will Reveal Prom Night will always be a time to reveal every pretty girl and every handsome guy. Whether the girl had a date or the guy was stag, we were unforgetable. We dined, danced, and romanced from dusk to dawn. We dressed for the occasion: long gowns, short gowns, tux, tails, and ties . . . and stacy's. We came in big cars, small cars, two door, four door, tinted windows, trus and bows, from Ninety Eights to Limosuines! The prom of 84 , given by the class of 85 , was definitely live and will always be in our minds as a night remembered as time re- vealed . Adrienne Jackson and Renee Jackson Alicia Smith and Ja net Hiding Juquita Buckner and Tamara Allen Rodney McDaniel and Kimella Glover 6 • School Life Prom Look at them in their heels and curls, here are the Senior Girls. In tucks, tails and ties, here are the Senior Guys. School Life Prom • 7 A Day At School Those people who don't believe that dead people can come back to life should be here around 2:35 when school is out. At 7:55 a.m. everyone is slowly walking to class with grim looks on their faces, ready to go back home. Eighth grade Falcons on their way to class are Rolanda Smallwood and Cail Dobard. By lunch everyone is awake, but after they go to Burger King or McDonalds, they're ready to go to sleep. The wildest class of the day is usually 5th hour. Because of all the candy they have eaten, most people are really hyper. By 6th hour people have calmed down a little but they're still excited about that 2:35 bell that signals school is out. After the last bell rings, if you're not going with the crowd, get out of the way!! Students gather books for the end of the day. Excited about going back to class after lunch is Lemonte Gilbert. 8 • Student Life Thinking seriously about Spanish is Ursula Henderson and Brid- gette Miles. Catching up on Falcon news is Chris Edwards and Vice-Principal Ms. Factory. Not being allowed to go off campus for lunch causes the 7th and 8th graders to struggle to get to the snack bar. Student Life • 9 10 • Club Organizations Falcon Drummers entertain the crowd at football halftime. Pride How in the world can the cheer- leaders do the fight song without mu- sic? They can't so that's why we have the band. The band assists the major- ettes and cheerleaders in their rou- tines and often entertain the Falcon fans at every home game during half- time. Because of their excellent music and routines, they are always a sight to see. Clubs And Organizations • 21 22 • Division People How Do You Feel Seventh graders are really wild about high school. Right now it's the best thing on earth to them. The reason why they are so ener- getic and always running to class is because they are having extreme difficulties with opening their lockers. When asked what they like best about the seventh grade Tom- my DuBose said, 1 like eating out of the candy machine. When Pa- mela Powell was asked she said, Just being in the high school building is a priviledge. When asked how they felt about not be- ing the babies, Mark Murell and Wylene Ewing said, It feels good. Now we won't get bossed around. We boss them around. When asked what he was look- ing forward to as an eighth grader, George Finley said, Getting out of the eighth grade. Being on the var- sity football team next year. Most of all getting to know the high school girls. But remember eighth graders, while you're in a hurry to get to the ninth grade, you will be the babies once again. Trying to pass their Biology I course, and who will be chosen for host and hostess' for the Jr., Sr. Prom, are just two events on their minds. Passing Biology I means a lot to the Sophomores, for they fear the sight of the letter F showing on report cards. They spend too much time studying Biology that they don't have time to study for Eng- lish, Geometry, and History. Let's not mention those extra activities outside of school. Sophomores don't let these things get you down, just don't worry about them, and say the Freshmen will have it next year. Doing It Jr. Style,, Juniors were very nervous about the path left for them to follow by the Seniors. The thought of facing English III, with Mrs. Thomas, and Algebra II, with Ms. Brown or Mr. Odendahl, was cause for great anxi- ety. But Juniors planned a new path; a path of their own. They are doing things their way and by the time they finish, the students going ahead of them and coming behind them will wish they were a part of the class of 86. Everything, including that great- ly anticipated prom, will be done Junior style. Junior style is a style that all will remember for years to come. If we had known that after finger paints and water colors came reading, writing, and arith- metic, we might have turned and ran away. But as we got older we wanted to learn and explore. Now that we are Seniors we can look back and remember things like finger paints, recess, barbie dolls, GI Joe's, Roller Skates, jump rope, Electric Company, and Mr. Rogers. Once we have reminis- cenced the happy times and the sad times, we can recall what it took to get thus far ... things like dedica- tion and motivation; the never end- ing moral support from our loved parents and the moral support from our trusted friends. We all possess a certain self-confidence as individuals as well as a class. It took a great sense of humor along with the ability to recognize the im- portance of everyday, as it reflects on our futures to get this far. i Informing students of daily announcements are Rondine Bruner and Stacey Roberts. Preparing to go to their next class are Terri Phillips, Juquita Buckner and Robert McCleary. Seniors • 40 What Fun? We've heard about it and now it's here - our senior year! We've been looking forward to this since kin- dergarten? Somebody really fooled; all of those ex-seniors, who made it look like so much fun. The last couple of years we had the type of team that has con- trolled most of their opponents and there were less worries for the coaches. The team almost had a shut out '82-'83 season with a foot- ball record of 4 and 6. The '83- 84 season saw the team regrouped with a record of 8 and 3. It seems the team is regaining it's tradition- al fight to excell and win the sea- son. The training may be strenous, and hard sometimes, but all in all the team hopes to TAKE STATE!!!!!!!!!!! Practice, practice, practice ... is the most important word to the players because that's all they hear from their coaches. While most students enjoyed their Christ- mas break eating, sleeping, and just having fun, guess where the basketball players were? You guessed it. They were up to the school (Millwood) practicing; get- ting ready to defeat their next op- ponents. Even though the players aren't very happy about this, it will all be worth it in the end because practice makes perfect. 1A Front Row: Jerome Factory, Michael Lewis, and Kevin Henderson: Back Row: Landers Jones, Robert McCleary, Greg Glover, Wil- liam Griggs, and Steven Cooper. Striving For State Track, one of the up and coming sports in America, has finally caught on at Millwood. This year's team has grown tremendously. Many of the participants are active in several other sports. Coach Low- rey credits this increase in size to the outstanding accomplishments and achievements made by athletes at the Summer Olympic held in Los Angeles California this past sum- mer. Marcellous Hawkins, a senior, says track is only for someone who believes in himself and works hard for what is expected out of running. Basketball Track • 85 Bigger And Better The track team is going to be the biggest and best track team ever. The new members of the team are Kevin Campbell, Michael Bell, and Richard Wallace. The team is load- ed with capable runners, sprinters and long jumpers. Last year the team had great suc- cess with their coach, Mr. Lowrey. They will have even more success this year with the great runners Marcellus Hawkins and Mike Ar- nett. The track team has been get- ting better and better each year but this team may be the best. The track team's great runners are Mike Ar- nett, Mike Brown, James Carpenter and Marcellus Hawkins. 86 • Track Optimistic Getting ready for the baseball season, Steven Cravens, gets ready to lift weights. The baseball team has not always been known for winning. But this year is a brand new beginning. The baseball team has 5 returning play- ers that may be an important part of the team. The baseball team is going to have a new strategy, Coach Willis says, We intend to gamble more as far as situations and base running are concerned. Millwood has not been a com- petitive baseball team in the past, but Coach Willis feels things will be changing. He says, I feel if we can keep a good positive attitude and with the athletes we have com- ing out we should win at least 10-15 games. Coach Willis is our new baseball coach. When asked how he liked the job, he replied, Yes, I am anx- ious, but at this point I am very busy with basketball. When we get started we will be working hard and most of all working toward our strategies. The weekends are the best time to catch up on your free time. Even though you have homework, you take the chance of going to the game Friday night and going to McDonald's afterwards.
