ruti THE TALON 1974 Volume I, Number 3 M llivood Junior-Senior High School 6724 North Eastern Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Perceptions The things we see let us in on what is 'coming down’ at Millwood Senior High. Mary Ann Moore gets an enlarged view of Science while Juanita Craft is the object of attention in the first annual Falcon Homecoming Parade. Sharon Breshers and Lisa Griffin share a visual experience during a pep rally and Principal Edwards glances at notes during an unusually quiet moment in his office. Displays from Mrs. Douglass' Art Department, a library full of books (sampled by Vonda Jenkins) and a memorable sunrise over northeast Oklahoma City supply images for our perceptions to interpret. What we hear determines ‘what it is' or ‘what it isn’t' for Falcon students. Announcements made by students, including Carolyn Carter assisted by Mrs. Amelia Spears, keep us informed. Announcements of a different kind are discussed between classes by Audie Daniels and Marchelle Clark and the Marching Falcons provide still more sound, on and off the field. A spirited pep assembly, usually dominated by junior high voices, individual instructions given by Miss Littlejohn and heard by Dennis Brown and the voices of Chorus members Tina Younger, Mona Younger and Danta Robinson add another sense im- portant in our perceptions. 4 I could tell you, If I wanted to, What makes me What I am.” Langston Hughes Sights, sounds, noises and even pictures can never fully have meaning until our emotions unravel what eyes and ears tell us. Merlin McCray. LaTonya Hutton and Andra Emmett communicate with more than their voices. The Falcon Band contributes to the feeling only a parade can create. Chandra McKinley searches her locker in a moment of desperation. Richard Hamilton ex- periences a small amount of anxiety during a pop quiz and Mike Elliot takes time to assist first graders in the Elementary Media Center. At Millwood, students have their own special way of perceiving and experiencing. Freedom to be yourself is important to all of us. Faculty The beginning of the 1973- 74 school year brought new perceptions and changes to Millwood High School. Percep- tions developed by a group of peo- ple called the Millwood High School Faculty and Staff. Mr. Donald M. Edwards, the new high school principal, worked with the faculty to insure the success of the newly es- tablished programs. The perceptions of Millwood High School during 1973-74 con- sisted mainly of people working together for tradition and success. By sharing their percep- tions with the students, the facul- ty became a strong influence. 9 Good Exhibits Many Skills Throughout the 1973-74 school year Superintendent Mr. L. W. Good utilized his perceptions to develop new programs and to maintain school success. Mr. Good not only worked in his office but in the class room as well, when he became the instructor of a 7:30 A.M. Math IV class. He was able to share his well known skill in math while learning about students and their needs at the same time. School Board meetings and of- fice activities ran smoothly with the help of Mrs. Loving, the superin- tendent's secretary and school board clerk. 10 Board And PAC Strengthen School School Board members Mr. James T. Clemmons, Mrs. Francis Percival, Mr. John W. Carruthers, Mrs. Martha Ferretti, and Mr. Gene Allen worked with Superintendent Good in order to involve themselves and the community in the decision making processes that keep Millwood changing for the better. Perceptions of the Parent Ad- visory Committee revolved around communication, organization and cooperation in Millwood High School. The newly formed group consisted of volunteer members from the com- munity at large and was directed by Mr. Edwards. Members of the PAC are (TOP) Mr. Reese. One may in- crease his or her perceptions when sharing mutual interests with other students. The need for involvement could be satisfied by joining an organiza- tion or a club at Millwood High School during the school yaar. There were new clubs formed for the first time during 1973-74. Being in existence for the first year, the clubs had to write constitutions for future members. The people involved in the organizations increased their percep- tions of themselves, their inviron- ment, and of Millwood High School. They not only established organizations for themselves but for the growth of the school as well. 19 Council Relates To Student Body The Senior High Student Coun- cil of Millwood this year was primari- ly concerned with “getting into stu- dent activities and letting the student body know what was going on. Joining with the Junior High group helped in- crease perceptions throughout the school, by uniting the Junior and Senior High students. TOP: President Maurice Amey presides over meeting. The group was highly spirited and enthusiastic. They were partly responsible for the spirit shown by Junior High students during assemblies. The Student Council joined with the Senior High group to organize a “Clean Up Day which was fun and beneficial to the school. Most of the council's activities were fund-raising events in- cluding a carnival. TOP: Zachary Evans. Lafeita Frazier, and Dolly Turner help with the outdoor cleaning on Clean-Up Day . The variations of music, in- struments, and techniques were the basic skills of the band. When on the field or in parades the group performed dance-type steps in place of the usual marching methods. The 1973-74 “Talon staff struggled with its small size in order to accomplish the jobs normally assumed by several people. Hirman Smith (NOT PICTURED ON THIS PAGE) and Janet Evans, co-editor, worked together on the sports section of the yearbook. LaDon Deatherage. editor, worked on the organizations division. Pat Thompson, also co-editor, was in- volved with the honors section. Keep- ing things together and running smoothly was Mr. Hand who devoted much time and effort to the Talon publication. Undoubtedly the percep- tions of the BSU were concerned with these purposes. The BSU was active in many ways as the main coor- dinating device of Black Heritage Week and as the sponsor of a school- wide sickle cell anemia test. A “Black Liberated Ball was held by the BSU at the Ramada Inn Northeast during February. TOP: Vanesse Merrick sings the Black National Anthem as Von- nie McCray. It has something to do with all activities and provides a better understanding of life. The Millwood Science Club was very successful in its efforts to broaden perceptions for its members and the school. There were ecological camping trips made by the club throughout the year. For a fund raising event which was fun as well as beneficial to the group, the Science Club held a chess tournament. Club The Foreign Language Club was involved in broadening their percep- tion of taste as they learned about and prepared Spanish and French dishes. Other countries greatly repre- sent their cultures with food in feasts and other celebrations. Mrs. Nimerick sponsored the club and was responsible for preparing the food which was served at a fondue party and a Christmas Fiesta. The group visited selected restaurants during the school year. The Foreign Language Club organized a simulated “Mardis Gras” which was very successful. Many other groups and clubs participated in the carnival. TOP: (SEATED) April Oallemore. Vanessa Graves. They began the year with a five mile ride to the home of Mrs. Dunlap who is the sponsor of the Bicycle Club. Other activities included guest speakers from the Police Department and a local bicycle shop. A trip to the Fire Department resulted in members receiving individual bicycle licenses. Perceptions of bicycle safety and bicycle laws were developed by the club members. ABOVE: Club members make last minute inspections before em- barking on their first ride of the season. Reading became a method of developing perceptions for the Millwood Student Librarians’ Association this year. The organiza- tion consisted of 35 students and their sponsor Mrs. Hunteman who is also the school librarian. The MSLA held meetings where several guests speakers were invited to address the group. These speakers varied from a spokeswoman from the Library for the Blind to teachers from Millwood who gave book reviews. Excursions to the Vo-Tech School, The Oklahoma Leadership Conference and the OSLA convention at the University of Oklahoma were part of the club’s program. 39 FHA Stresses Awareness Future Homemakers of America are usually associated only with cook- ing. sewing, etc. because these are part of homemaking duties. The FHA chapter of Millwood included other activities along with the ordinary “homemaker” activities. These included an excursion to the Police Department, inviting guest speakers to Millwood for the FHA, and selling fire extinguishers to en- courage home safety. Some of the club’s other ac- tivities were a cake decoration demonstration and the FHA State Rally in April. Mrs. Lin- da Spears 40 To find delight in any small part of the order of the uniuerse is to res- pond to the uniuersal language of perception!” Marjon Downer We must teach, help young peo- ple to perceive — see with feeling. To use their senses, to establish identity with an object of nature through its smell, its shape, its texture, its color. Lines are only lines or are they? The most basic shapes are a circle, a square . . . what makes us prefer one over the other? If the material is similar and the shape different, what is the feeling? If the material is different, yet the shape is similar, what is the feeling? The relationships of nature never cease to amaze us — what will we see next? Color has a strong emotional impact on us. Tex- ture is there to see and feel how is it that we miss so much? We cannot continue to grow and affect change if we cannot remain in contact with the physical world through all of our senses. We must be free to use our im- agination in extending our vision. During 1973-74, Millwood High School presented honors to students whose perceptions were sensitive and who made special achievements. The honors were merely rewards for the students’ efforts and accomplishments. In structuring a successful Millwood High School there must be leaders whose percep- tions will make it so, and develop a school which will also be honored. 43 Mr. Dennis Brown Mr. Falcon Dennis Brown, senior, was selected by his classmates as Mr. Falcon for the 1973-74 school year. Dennis served as senior class presi- dent and was an outstanding member of the Falcon Basketball team. The Mr. Falcon award is based on leadership, scholarship and service. Dennis Brown was well qualified to receive this honor. M ss Florence Lyons Miss Falcon Florence Lyons, senior, was chosen as Miss Falcon for the 1973- 74 school year. The ways in which each class perceived the school and each other gave individuality to that class. The classes were continuously in- volved in activities.
