THE TALON Opening ... 2 Faculty ... 9 Sports ... 53 Organizations ...11 Honors . . . 43 Dedication . . . 52 Millwood High School 6724 North Eastern Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Classes ... 75 Decisions . . . First hour, second hour, English, mathematics, French and all othei subjects play a large part in occupy- ing the sometimes idle minds of stu- dents at Millwood. Offering the best materials, com- bined with outstanding instructors, students at Millwood are given the opportunity to excel as far as they wish in academic excellence. Of course decisions and academics, or academics are decisions, having to know certain facts for different sub- jects. The role of a student in class has changed vastly over the years, espe- cially here at Millwood. Students in some classes are permitted to work sometimes independently on an accelerated working basis. As in the past Millwood offers the best techniques, instructors, and equipment, to produce the leaders of the future. 2 3 An idle mind is the devil’s work- shop.” A rolling stone gathers no moss, well whatever, the point is, if you're busy, or involved in something, chances are your time will be put to good use. That's the policy at Millwood. Stu- dents and faculty alike are able to par- ticipate in events and functions not only after school, but often during school. Pep rallys, musical presentations, films, and a variety of other activities give everyone time for relaxation, and change from the ordinary. After staying in classrooms throughout the day, an appreciation for spare time is acquired, soon a student may find himself looking forward to one of those frequent intercom bulletins or even an unexpected fire drill. But soon the day ends at school, and other activities begin at home. 4 5 Experience The students and faculty of Millwood come from a wide cross-section of backgrounds and locations. After school hours many faculty members com- mute to Edmond, Guthrie, and other towns nearby. Others live in walking distance, living nearby so they can devote all their spare time to the students they enjoy so much, five days a week! Every now and then you might see one of your teachers in a grocery store or some other place and find yourself surprised that they actually do more than make homework assignments and sometimes make you won- der if they are human! But faculty, students, admin- istration, and other personnel here at Millwood have set an example for many other schools. Proving the attributes of racial integration and how when formed gradually by per- sonal concern it will, can, and has worked at Millwood. Perhaps this is the reason Millwood runs so smoothly, dur- ing school, and many hours 6 after. 7 And After it's over, all over; the days of the golden rule, past students of Millwood will be able to think back to the 50 minute lunch breaks, detention hall, and overall mass hysteria, and say what a way to occupy 13 years of my existence. But as life leads a pathway to success or whatever, you may find yourself wondering what to do for the next 13 years. Thanks to Millwood's role in your youth this ques- tion will be easily answered, you can always rely on the increasing demand for bas- ketball playing, secretaries that speak French and Span- ish fluently, or you can open up your own cookie sale on the lawn of the mental hos- pital where you will probably be living by then, because of unemployment. Growth It Leaden FACULTY Decisions are a vital part of Millwood’s faculty, administra- tion, and business personnel's daily agenda. When to do what, and why to do it, and maybe even where are questions often asked. The teachers, principals, assistant principal, secretaries, and other parts of the Millwood machinery sometimes find themselves deciding what to decide next. But even with the constant pressure of decision making, the Millwood machine continues to turn steadily due to the sound reasoning and sensitivity dem- onstrated by Millwood's faculty and administrative body. 9 Mr. Good Proves Effective TOP RIGHT: Mr. Good having a talk with Andre Emmitt. Mr. Gene Allen, Mrs. Francis Percival, Mr. James T. Clem- mons, Mr. John W. Carruthers, and Mrs. Martha Ferretti, are the current School Board mem- bers. Hiring new personnel, appro- priating funds, and preparing for the future, the board always keeps in mind student needs as the major objective. They thought it would break, or at least numb, the monotony of basic school life. Well, it added flavor, vari- ety, change and excitement, but only gave half a credit sometimes. The organizations at Mill- wood add change to a student’s life, and in some cases, help build foundations for future experiences. The Student Coun- cil gives knowledge of business procedure and government. Home Economics builds future homemakers. Band builds musi- cal skills and all organizations teach students how to cope with situations that may confront them later in life. But then again, another deci- sion - which organization to join? 17 Student Council Gets Down to Business ABOVE: Student Council discusses business over lunch. Council Bridges Gap The Millwood Senior High Student Council composed of 30 students with Mr. Donald Spur- gin as sponsor, is formed to produce a bridge in relations between the students, faculty, and administration. At the start of this year's school term efforts were made by the executive board to make the Student Council a more functional organization. The Council has one repre- sentative and alternate from each High School Homeroom. These people were nominated and voted upon by the students in their homeroom. The Senior High Student Council meets once a week each Wednesday, alternating from luncheon to during class time meetings. TOP LEFT: Student Council discusses business over lunch. The Band played a key role in every Pep assembly and athletic contest by providing added spirit. Marching became an integral part of the band's repertoire this season, as well as the addition of four lovely, performing majorettes. Contests provided a chance for band members to compete individually and in groups with musicians from throughout Oklahoma. The important point to remember, said Director Scott, is that 72-73 is a year for building. The future and experience will provide an even better band. 25 . In the second year of opera- tion the Journalism classes have excelled in literary talents, and the mechanics of Journalism. The Journalism I class took charge of the newspaper, bring- ing information with variety to the students and patrons of Millwood. The Journalism II class is responsible for the 1973 Talon. Pictures, paper, typewriters, glue, hard work, and devoted participants have made the pub- lications of Millwood's 1973 Journalism class a success. Mrs. Douglass and her classes have helped other organizations in the Senior High and Junior High system, by providing pro- Create motional posters and numerous materials to make signs for sports events. The art department at Mill- wood does more than splatter paint, it serves as a vital seg- ment of the school, aiding in any way it possibly can. 32 Artists Make Creative Decisions TOP LEFT: The window near the art room displays some of the an students' work. We Finally Made If Millwood has started a slow process getting a High School together, but this is the second successful year. Seniors at Mill- wood say that this is the most successful year ever. It has shown lots of progress and lots of hard work. Most of the Sen- iors here are hard working stu- dents, they get involved in almost all events. Seniors are busy doing assignments or study- ing for tests. They figure after twelve years they deserve something - a dip- loma. ABOVE RIGHT: Seniors take a break in the courtyard. The Junior class at Millwood finds itself aching to end their long term education. Classified as the ischievous, and active fifteen and sixteen year olds who attempt the dar- ing and usually succeed, the Millwood Junior class has the ability to excel in any given field they may choose. Composed of all varietes of people, the Junior class could be termed as one of the most unusual ever in the history of Millwood High School. TOP LEFT: Juniors during their lunch break. BELOW RIGHT: Sophomores Bobby Baker and Willie Brown enjoy a moments 36 rest during Student Council dance. These students are gradually becoming adults and are leaving childhood play behind. The obstacles these students meet in the future will be easier to overcome because of their asso- ciation with Millwood school. Fun and Winter Wonderland Jr. High is a time of science fairs and mixers where nobody dances and of course, the utter confusion that accompanies all seventh and eighth graders. It's surprising that out of all the chaos of Junior High can come sensible people. But it eventually happens and from there come the Valedictorians of the Class of '77 and '78 and the Nobel prize winners of 1990 and just plain people of the twenty-first century. After all, even Albert Ein- stein was in Junior High once. «4. TOP LEFT: Mr. Wagner explains the lesson to one of his Jr. High students. Usually seen enjoying his favorite pastime, motorcycling, Terry seemed to always be at ease and in a pleasant mood. Although, many students didn't know him well, those who did had grown to enjoy the presence of his company and now with that absence we feel the loss of a good friend. The staff of the 1973 Millwood Talon places this dedication in our yearbook in Remembrance of a Friend. Terry Lee McBride 52 1956 - 1973 SPORTS Some of the most decision making processes ever are included in the sports activities at Millwood. Game after game, match after match, each par- ticipant in sports at Millwood displays the benefits of good coaching, native talent and the knowledge of making the cor- rect move at the necessary moment. Sports do more than build muscles and make excitement. They teach the players and spectators a little more about personal contact with others, and how to cope with high emotional contagion. Spirit, pride, interest, play- ers and coaches make the team, but decisions make the score. S3 Falcon Football fans enjoy an exciting season as Coach Leo- dies Robinson's gridsmen took advantage of last year's experi- ence and won six games against only four losses. With the help of outstanding play on the part of quarterback Mike Bruce, back Bernard Flow- ers, end Nick Washington and the kicking of Don LeBoeuf the Falcons scored a victory over cross town rival, Heritage Hall, to highlight the season. New clothes, fresh make-up, and recently combed hair are obvi- ous in the following pages. Actually most of the decision making included in this portion of the Talon” is done the night before by parents, and students who want to deck out, because their picture packets also come from these snap shots. 75 BEVERLY KINDLE KEITH RUSSELL STACY SHERRILL Juniors Get It Together Doyle Amey Cyd Anglin Ronald Beatty George Benefee Lorna Blevins Mike Boyd Debra Brantley Donald Brantley Sharon
