TOP ROW: Mr. Bailes, Mr. Shields, Mr. Lawson, Mr. Klotz. 1959 Blue Devils Shortly after the start of football practice, it became obvious that the Blue Devils had emerged from the football doldrums and were going to be a contend- er for Henlopen honors. Inspiring his squad with the will to win, Coach Joe Shields reshaped holdovers and molded newcomers into a high scoring offensive and hard-nosed defensive squad. The Blue Devils, in rolling up 204 points in 8 games, became one of the two teams in downstate Delaware to crack 200 points. Opening the season against Lord Baltimore, the Blue Devils struck with light- ning-like precision to score four quick touchdowns. With a 27'-0 halftime lead, Coach Shields spent the second half juggling line-ups and giving newcomers a taste of the football wars. Final score, M.H,S., 27, L.B., O. Emotions were running high as preparations were started for the Rehoboth game. However, that old enemy, rain, washed out the scheduled Friday night game. On Monday the steam was gone and the Blue Devils, plagued by iniuries, penalties, and mistakes were dropped 2l-0 by the Sea Hawks. lt was in the third game of the season that the team began to iell. Traveling to Harrington, the Blue Devils revealed its newly found depth as the offensive punch in a 25-T2 win was triggered by newcomers and second stringers. Kcontinued on page Mil
