FOOTBALL SUMMARY Icontinued from page 792 One of the most exciting of the season's encounters was the North Caroline battle. Two first period touchdowns put the Blue Devils out in front 13-O. How- ever, the Caroline Bulldogs struck back in the third quarter to cut the margin to 13-12. Stung by this action, the Blue Devils exhibited some of their finest brand of ball witnessed all season in rolling to two final period TD's and a 25-12 victory. The next two games were adding machine affairs as Billy Baker, Ron Wootten, Eddie Messick, and Alton Scott went touchdown happy. Scoring 82 points, the Blue Devils hopelessly out-classed weak North Dorchester and Shelbyville teams by 39-O and 43-O. The highlight of the Selbyville game was the successful effort of Herm fthe toej Rogers in kicking a field goal-the first of the year in the State of Delaware. The big game of the season was the Bridgeville encounter. The Mustangs of Bridgeville, undefeated in Conference play, needed a win to clinch the title and the Blue Devils, with an upset, could earn a tie with Bridgeville and Rehoboth for the championship. In a bruising, bone-jarring battle appeared a massive move- ment of shadowy figures in the London-type fog that engulfed Millsboro that evening. Outweighed severely, the Blue Devils nonetheless staged a valiant strug- gle and the Mustangs were hard-pressed to triumph by a 13-6 count. The Thanksgiving Eve finale against the Bears from John M. Clayton, the tradi- tional rivalry in which previous results are supposedly ignored, was a glorious climax to a fine 6-2 season. Striking hard, fast, and often, the Blue Devils rolled to an easy 39-7 win and retention of the trophy for the third consecutive year. To single out players for honors is a difficult project, particularly when a team is well-balanced and team effort was the dominant theme. However, five Blue Devil gridders were choices for All-Conference. Bill Baker, fifth high scorer in the state, Alton Scott at end, and Joe Lofland at tackle were selected on the first team and Phil Messick and Pete Dukes were picked at tackle on the second team. These selections were made possible by the fine support these boys had from teammates such as John Kline, Herm Rogers, Josh Messick, Buck Godwin, Jim Johnson, Eddie Messick, Zeke McCabe and the able quarterbacking of Ron Woot- ten, felt by many to be one of the shore's finest quarterbacks. The fine coaching of Coaches Shields, Lawson and Bailes, the support and en- thusiasm of the student body fthe twelfth man on the fieldj, coupled with the desire to win has lifted Millsboro to new heights of football fever. With 92 candi- dates signed to report next fall, the football prospects at M.H.S. seem unlimited. GO, DEVlLS, GO! I
