POLITICAL ACTIVITY Democratic ticket-seeker Rev. Jesse Jackson greets sup- porters during a campaign stop at Millsaps. With 1984 being tlie year of the Presidential elec- tion, the Millsaps campus buzzed with political activ- ity. Students formed political party groups to further the cause of their candidates. The Millsaps Republi- cans and Millsaps College Democrats sponsored speakers and provided volunteers for local cam- paigning. The Millsaps College Democrats played host to two famous political figures. On Sept. 16, national media attention focused on our campus as Rev. Jes- se Jackson, civil rights leader and candidate for the Democratic nomination for president, spoke to an overflowing crowd in the Academic Complex Lec- ture Hall. Rev. Jackson gave a rousing speech full of the rhythmic cadence and eloquence for which is justly famous. John Zaccaro, Jr. peaks to the Millsaps community. Zac- carro visited the campus while making a Southeastern tour during which he visited many colleges. On Sept. 18, John Zaccaro Jr., son of vice-presi- dential hopeful Geraldine Ferraro, spoke informally to students and staff in front of the Student Union. Zaccaro, a 20 year old college student himself, spoke to the student audience not only as a Demo- crat but as a peer as well. He stressed his mother ' s qualifications and genuine desire to be vice-presi- dent. Such appearances and speeches aided the stu- dents ' understanding of the issues and contributed to heightened political involvement of students dur- ing the election campaign. The impact on the college as a whole was one of increasing its prestige and making it better known through extensive news cov- erage of these events. 26

FOUNDERS WEEKEND Founders Weekend is a time to recognize those whose foresight and persistence have led to the growth, maturity, and excel- lence we know as Millsaps College. This year, Founders Weekend recognized the Millsaps Singers, who celebrate their 50th anniversary in 1985. The weekend began Friday with the Friday Forum in which Dr. Samuel Jones, professor at Rice University, and a group of Millsaps alumni presented a program dealing with the trends in contem- porary classical music. Friday night President and Mrs. George Harmon hosted a reception to honor former members of Singers. The reception was held at the president ' s home. Saturday morning events began with a Troubadour concert, directed by Dr. Timothy Coker. The Founders luncheon was held at noon and was the highlight of the weekend ' s ac- tivities. The luncheon was a time to reflect on the heritage of the college and those people who have contributed to its suc- cess. Also during the luncheon, the Distin- guished Professor Award was presented as was the Alumnus of the Year award. The weekend concluded with a memorial ser- vice during which flowers were placed at the mausoleum of Major Reuben Webster Millsaps, the founder of the college.
