Class History of 1989 Well, here wc arc the class of 1989. It's June 8th, and it’s hard to believe that this is one of the last times we’ll be together as a class. This evening at 6:30 we'll be concluding our timeless and memorable journey through the Millis School System with our long awaited graduation. We have left many marks and made many memories that will stay with us for many years to come. It all started 13 long years ago in the year 1975. As we look back on the hazy sandbox years, the few memories we could recall were Kristian Carlson's newly acquired taste for arlroom paste, and Alexandra Ncitlich and Cassandra Hunt started boy watching at an early age in the boys' bathroom. As we started 1st grade, there was no turning back. Wc began our first year of full school days, thank God for the 2 recesses, in which we usually found Cassandra Hunt chasing Phil Cebrowski. “Melvin the Magnificent gave us a chance to try a bit of show bix. with scott Nichols as Melvin the magnificent clown. We still think you arc a magnificent clown Scott! This year wc gained Chris Fagan, only to lose Bob Martellio. Never fear, he’ll be back. This year wc welcomed Elizabeth Warren. Laura Dwclley. Tom O'Neil and Pamela Cronan who over came her shyness and show ed us her teaching abilities when she substituted for Ms. Bergen. Ms. Bergen threw up on the way in from recess. David Thurston will never forget the time Lisa Johnson stabbed him with a pencil in his arm. In 3rd grade we made our move to the Memorial School. We had graduated from cloakrooms to real lockers. This year brought us Michael Brown, Raymond Welch, and George Welch. Although they were a great addition to our class, wc couldn't quite make up for the recess wc lost in the transition. 4th grade was the big year for square dancing. Did anyone really like their partner? We were also given the privilege of playing an instrument and singing in the chorus. Who could forget our first singing experience in the 4th grade concert. In fifth grade wc welcomed Heidi Burns who will never forgej her first day in Millis, when Ronnie Anderson called her gorilll cookies. Mr. Ford's 5th grade economic unit had it’s ow n mafia, a her; lae Casucci decided to go into his own independent real estate. 6th grade was the year of our first over night school trip u Thompson's Island. Wc arc still wondering if Fred John son got seai home because he stole the puppies, or because he claimed to havi seen Alexandra Ncitlich's underwear. In 7th grade. Derek Everett and Krista Hankin were added u our class. Who could forget Mr. Dodge's english report when cvenoa researched Michael Jackson. 8th grade was a big year for all of us. We had finally made it n the top of the ladder in the Middle School. 8th grade dar.ee brought us a new style of dance when Kristian Carlson. Pete Sillctti. Scan Fitzpatrick. Tim O'Neil. Eric Johnson, and Miki Rousseau preceded to show us their break dancing abilities. Aim Thistle and Eve Bello had their own form of “breaking in tin science lab. This was also the year of our last field day. w hich was a memcra blc one for Heidi Burns, when running 100yd dash, tripped eve Lisa Cunningham, falling into the gravel. But she regained he confidence only to find herself in the same position after trippinj over the hurdles. Our horizons were also expanded by venturing out to Washing ton D.C. Jen Levy and Aimie Thistle w ill never forget they had u call Mr. Hinds in to their room to rescue them from their overflow- ing toilet. We welcomed Dya Khalsa, Erika Birch. Jen Stew art. Eric John- son, and Justine McGrath. Many of our classmates left us to attcac Tri-County or Xaverian. Our freshman year was the beginning of our high school c c! and began one long year as lowly freshmen. We endured ridicule nd some of us being branded with nicknames, like “Bonchcad” .k.a. Tim Kenney, or “Squash” a.k.a. Josh Scanlon. IE This year brought us the new experience of high school parties - right Gilly? We also started a steady schedule. It's amazing that any of us emorized how the numbers went. Gary Fagcrhicm and Paul uellette might still be upset about not being in the same homc- oom. In our sophomore year we were joined by Shannon Dooling, as nuch as she would like to deny it. We didn't see too much of Janice Bertolino this year. She was too usy hiding in the corner with Dave. Shari DiDonato. Jen Stewart, Tom Waters, and Gary Bosse kverc the prospects of our rebellious youth as they, along with the est of the marching band, stood up to the football team. David Douglas, Shane Marchand, Dave Woodcock, and Dave Thurston were all a part of this silly act in their so silly sophomore year. The real fun started in our junior year when the members of our class got their licenses. This brought us a chance to broaden our horizons by traveling to other towns and the privilege of being able !to go to the movies without mom or dad driving. 11th grade brought all of our hard work to a rewarding show with the junior prom. Our king was David Thurston and our queen was Heidi Burns. Of course all was ventured the day after the prom when Joan McMorrow openly invited us to her house on the beach: fortunately for her none of us made it there. Danielle McKay showed us her skills on how to work a convcrtablc. This was also the year Georgia Pintsopolous came out of her plosct, much to her mother's dismay. We were joined this year by Danielle McKay. Finally our senior year. This year we hosted Mikie Comitini and Keiko Tsuchiya, our exchange students. We were awakened every morning to the sound of Brendan Sheehan's cheerful voice over the P.A. We were also shocked to hear Tom Howie finally speak. This was the year of our senior ski trip. Fun was had by all who went. This was also the year we uncovered many hidden charcteris- tics of our fellow classmates. Scan Caulfield, a.k.a. Calcnderman, discovered he was a member of the superfriends. Krista Hankin. Amy McClellan, and Seann Daly left us in January to take the big responsibility of going to work. Many of our classmates took on a smaller responsibility by joining the work study program. Among those were Christine Radcliffe, Keith Rad- cliffe, Jeff Roman. Deb Gagliard. and Eric Johnson. Oh, the stories we could tell about our senior year. Some are better told by the person himself. Ask Ross Bracket why no one wants to park next to him, or Robyn Works how many studies she really has. And that old car of David Sjogren's, just how old that is, or Chris Carter and Tom Burke who really did the physics labs. Our high school years brought many friends together, like the friendship of Deb Maas and Dawn Gillis, which stayed true. We really didn't sec too much of Kristin Daly these four years. She could usually be found with a certain Xaverian boy. Thank you, Chrystync Diatelcvi and Amy Doliner 5 Class of 1989 Prophecy S — Well, here we are at our tenth year reunion. Mr. Kha- chadoorian, Mr. Bruncllc, faculty, parents, relatives, friends and especially the Class of 1989: Good evening. I would like to welcome all of you to the Millis High School graduation. Class of 1989. Tonight we reminisce about the past. I ask you to recall the days of elementary school. It was here that we learned the fundamentals of life. Not only did we learn what was best for ourselves individ- ually, but we learned as well the importance of others. In a world that has become so automated, we must not forget the necessity of human interaction and togetherness. As we leave the classrooms and playing fields of Millis High School, we must part not only as individuals buy also as a generation willing to utilize the simplistic values we were taught in kindergarten. It is here I would like to share with you an excerpt from a book written by Robert Fulgham entitled, “All I Ever Really Needed To Know, I Learned in Kindergarten.” “Most of what 1 really need to know about how to live, and what to do and how to be. I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at the nursery school. These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think sonic and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work some, every day. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and AIM IE THISTLE VALEDICTORIAN stick together. This excerpt discusses the significance of the basics and alio us to acknowledge their relevance in the future. As heirs of the pas-i and bequeathers of the future, we must teach never forget th things we have learned nor ignore the things we will be asked t teach. The importance of fundamentals is essential. As Fulghaua states. “Think of what a better world it would be if all -the w ho! world — had cookies and milk at 3 o'clock every afternoon aw j then lay down with our blankets for a nap. or if we had a basi 1 policy in our nation, and other nations, to always put things bad i w here we found them and cleaned up our messes. And it is still true j no matter how old you are. when you go out into the world, it is besl to hold hands and stick together.” Tonight, I ask the Millis High School Class of 89 to remembe | these words as we travel down different roads in life. What eve j path, you the class of 1989 choose to pursue, w hether it be furthinB your education at college or university, seeking employment oJ trade or serving our country. I urge you to follow the above creed! The most important values we have learned, those stressing unity! harmony and goodwill towards others, were ones learned in kinder-l garten. Remember and practice them so that we can ensure al future of which our generation will be proud. In closing. I would like to thank my friends and faculty here afl Millis High School for making the past four years very special. ■ would also like to express my deepest gratitude to my parents andl sisters for their love and support. I couldn't have done it withou them! Thank you and Good luck to the Class of 89. May your lives bel filled with happiness and success. 116 Reverend Clery, Members of the School Committee. Mr. Ka- chadoorian, Mr. Brunelle, faculty, parents, and friends. It seems strange to be standing here, not to make some profound statement but instead to say goodbye. Two weeks ago my classmates and I were still high school stu- dents. Friends, teachers, and finals were top priorities in our minds. In this short period of time our lives have drastically changed. • College, careers, and adult responsibilties have taken the place of childhood dreams and memories. No longer can we rely upon our parents to make the proper decisions for us. Instead, we must stand alone, to succeed or fail as a result of our own judgement. In this way. we can grow as individuals, the promise of the future. Looking back, it is difficult to determine when education is actually initiated. Perhaps kindergarten is the first word which ■ comes to mind and yet it seems as if all children begin learning the day they are born. Similarly, we continue gaining knowledge until, ■ at last we are incapable of receiving further information. Now that High School has come to a close a stage of our school- ing has ended, another begins. We stand upon the brink of adult- • hood but are afraid to cross the threshold with fears of the un- ' known. For many years most of us here have been together. We have • found security in the familiar, strength in numbers. It is time to leave those behind that have stood by us for as long as we can J remember. In fulfilling our own separate goals our lives will truly be richer, more meaningful. I am saddened by the thought of graduating from Millis High i School and finding myself in the real world.” At times it is my wish that I still had years left, that this time will never end. I grew up in High School, oddly enough. Freshmen year seems as if it took . place countless decades ago. It is time to move on. What lies ahead waits for our discovery. 3 DAWN G1LL1S SALUTATOR IAN OUR BEST Wherever you're headed, we want to wish you the very best. We also have a suggestion or two that will help in the future.
