SUPERINTENDENT School Committee: Back row (l-r): P. McMahon. R. Healy. C. Devlin. Front row Mrs- B. Oschman. Mrs. D. Saccoman (l-r): V. Khachdoorian. E. Neville. W. Alessi. TO THE GRADUATES OF 1987: Education should foster and stimulate in each person the natural desire for lifelong learning, and should help learners develop the skills necessary to fulfill that desire. Learning is a necessity if individuals are to cope successfully with our complex, diverse, and ever-changing society. Learning should be appreciated by everyone as an opportunity for enrich- ment and growth throughout a lifetime, both for the acquisition of new skills, and for the sense of achievement and happiness that comes from the creative use of leisure time. Education must, therefore, help all students develop a frame- work for seeking and receiving new information, stimulate the desire to learn, and encourage continuous learning. While symbols of achievement such as credits and a diploma may vali- date skills, educators and students alike must see these, not as an ends unto themselves, but as a means towards acquiring knowledge. Education must prepare the student for living with and mastering new technologies. Education must prepare students for the productive and satisfying use of leisure time, and for learning how to live with others in our increasingly complicated society. If in the years at Millis High School you accepted your burdens of study, if you worked hard to overcome weaknesses in certain subjects, if you spent time on some of the activities which im- proved your skills and developed your leadership qualities: you have then strengthened yourselves for the real test of life: whose victory spells success, prosperity, honor and greater inner hap- piness. I not only congratulate you graduates of 1987 on your achievements, but urge you to constantly apply yourselves in the years ahead as you make those decisions about your future. I wholeheartedly wish for each of you many years of success and happiness. Sincerely yours. Vahan J. Khachadoorian Superintendent of Schools Mr. Vahan J. Khachadoorian 6
