TO THE GRADUATES OF 1987: Education should foster and stimulate in each person the natural desire for lifelong learning, and should help learners develop the skills necessary to fulfill that desire. Learning is a necessity if individuals are to cope successfully with our complex, diverse, and ever-changing society. Learning should be appreciated by everyone as an opportunity for enrich- ment and growth throughout a lifetime, both for the acquisition of new skills, and for the sense of achievement and happiness that comes from the creative use of leisure time. Education must, therefore, help all students develop a frame- work for seeking and receiving new information, stimulate the desire to learn, and encourage continuous learning. While symbols of achievement such as credits and a diploma may vali- date skills, educators and students alike must see these, not as an ends unto themselves, but as a means towards acquiring knowledge. Education must prepare the student for living with and mastering new technologies. Education must prepare students for the productive and satisfying use of leisure time, and for learning how to live with others in our increasingly complicated society. If in the years at Millis High School you accepted your burdens of study, if you worked hard to overcome weaknesses in certain subjects, if you spent time on some of the activities which im- proved your skills and developed your leadership qualities: you have then strengthened yourselves for the real test of life: whose victory spells success, prosperity, honor and greater inner hap- piness. I not only congratulate you graduates of 1987 on your achievements, but urge you to constantly apply yourselves in the years ahead as you make those decisions about your future. I wholeheartedly wish for each of you many years of success and happiness. Sincerely yours. Vahan J. Khachadoorian Superintendent of Schools Mr. Vahan J. Khachadoorian 6 PRINCIPAL To the Class of 1987: Congratulations to each and every one of you on having completed your requirements for graduation. As the first class to experience the increased graduation requirements, your task has been made more difficult as a result. You should be proud of your accomplishments. It is our sincere hope that we have provided you the necessary skills and information to serve as a solid basis for future academic and career direction and that you will apply them not only to your own pursuit for a quality life but you will share them with others who may not have had the same advantages. We wish you much happiness and success in your lives and thank you for being a truly unique and memorable class. Sincerely. Paul A. Brunelle Mr. Paul A. Brunelle 7 Mrs. J. Dunphy. Mrs. C. It was at this time that we finally realized that ou years at Millis High were drawing to a close. We watched our selves unify to win the balloon toss on our Senior Class Trip a the Frank Davis Resort. We will not soon forget the carefree atti tude the class possessed at the Senior Class Banquet. Clas; Day will be remembered for it's lighthearted farewell to the un derclassmen. As we gathered in the cafeteria prior to gradu ation. the air about us was filled with emotion. We then took oui places for our march together towards the future. 106 After all these years, school is finally over. The routine we have now gone through for twelve years or more seemed virtually endless. We all realized that it would end someday, but deep down we felt that it would continue for- ever. It seemed we would al- ways be doing the same things with the same people. We've jilso had our triumphs of various sorts; depending on the in- jividual they might be clearly obvious or very personal. How- jver, from an objective point of view, the value of the entire ex- lerience might seem limited. As we prepare to graduate, we iay begin to question whether our somewhat sheltered educa- on leaves us ready for the world we are about to enter. 1 Regardless of whether one enters the workforce or chooses to ontinue their education, the level of pressure will increase. The option to relax and rationalize that “it's only a report card will no ' Dnger exist. Furthermore, the responsibility is now ours alone, is we cannot expect teachers and counselors to guide us down pe proper path. From now on, success and failure will be mea- sured in terms such as ‘employment and financial security. (However, each of us must realize that the challenge before us. mough large, is not insurmountable. The key to future success is d adopt the same attitude towards life as one does towards achool in order to receive a proper education. Common wisdom states that you get out what you put in. We eed only find a reasonable goal, apply ourselves to it to the best resent. We are the past. We are the present. We are the future. Our ves are our own now. May we all be able to make the right lecisions. Thank you and good luck. Matthew Nickerson Valedictorian The past, the present and the future are three time references which exist at any age. At this moment in our lives, all three can be clearly defined. Our years in high school have now become part of our pasts. We have all made numerous mistakes from which we can only learn from. Our best friends have been there when we needed someone to pick on, and cry on, and laugh with. Our great experiences of our first day of school, our first bike, our first kiss or our first car are neither countable, nor forgettable. They are the precious memories that will be stored in our hearts and minds forever. The present is of paramount importance in our lives. All of us are grinning from ear to ear with tears in our eyes. Graduation day has arrived. A day that looked forever in the future will too. become part of our unforgettable pasts. Finally our future exists we will all bloom and head in separate directions. Eighteen short years of our lives have been spent developing ourselves. Talents learned from schooling, sports, and the society can help to build a better future for everyone whether we are bound for a distant and challenging career or to build a family, our individualities will create unique futures. We cannot hold onto the past but learn from it as we step into the future. The present is a time over which we have control. We have the freedom of choice to create a successful future. Our futures will always be there as a goal and as a dream to allow us to enjoy the of our abilities, and reward will surely come. All of us will have our ups and downs, as has been true while we've been here at Millis. but life is not so harsh as to condemn us for our small failures. To graduate from high school is to prove that one has that ability and the desire to succeed, and I have confidence that we shall all do so. I would like to thank anyone who was even remotely associated with my educational experience, including my parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators. However. I would most like to thank everyone in the Class of '87. They may not have all been perfect angels, but I can't imagine what it would have been like without any one of them. Thank you very much.
