DEDICATION The Centennial Class of 1985 is honored that it will leave the Millis Schools at the same time as Mr. Vellante. We feel that his efforts as Superintendent have always been sensitive toward the students. His development of the open campus program, Senior Class Trip, Graduation Exercises, and so much more exemplifies his student oriented concerns. Because of this we would like to announce the dedication of our yearbook to someone who deserves our heart felt thanks, appreciation, and respect, Mr. William Vellante. It ' , MR. WILLIAM A. Payne, S. Reilly, C. Mitchell, K. Collins, D. Saccoman, N. Tiberi ( -r) The annual homecoming Parade was unique this year as each candidate rode in a corvette. The five finalists were escorted to the podium by five senior boys. The runners-up were presented with a rose and a kiss from Mr. Brunelle and finally, the homecoming queen of 1985 was crowned. Congratulations Kelly! Th e day ended with a dance to celebrate. Millis triumphed over Medway again 32-12! After hours of gruelling practice, the girls were psyched! Millis clearly dominated the game as Missy and Mad scored the touchdowns. The defense and offense worked hard together and most importantly had lots of fun destroying the Medway girls. This year we had an extra special treat at Christmas. We had a “best legs contest’’ to raise money for Oxfam Ethiopia. The winners were determined by the boy who collected the most money for his legs. Runners up were M ike Fettig and Chris Quinn and the winner freshman Bob Flaherty! The male teachers got involved also with Mr. Touhey winning the student vote for his legs! “Yea! We got accepted to Medfield State!’ ac «a ens ‘a ier” | THE SENIOR PLAY 20 CAST Mr. Gilbreth ...... T. Fortunately, a renewed interest in the younger grades and the determination of veteran players made the season, while not a complete success, certainly formidable. Coach Karoghlanian was optimistic as always and urged us to compete in the State In- dividual Tournament where both of our young doubles teams played extremely well. We only won first prize in basketball and volleyball but we had a good time trying in all the events. Everyone will recall the great canoe race — we ended up going the wrong way! The tug of war was almost a stand off but even the crue could not hold off the other side. Mrs. Russ, Miss O'Donnell, Mr. Cangi and Mr. Dooling came with us and enjoyed the sunshine at Frank Davis Resort! 91 : a mati . ye, Daf £ ‘ i 7 Due to threatening clouds, Class Day was held indoors this year! Patty led off with her welcoming address followed by Cyn and Jen readi ng the history. It was the first time Cyn ever lost her voice! Next, Lisa and Jeanette read our class will. Presentations were made by Patty and Nan before our special visit from three Spanish gypsies: Laureen, Carolyn and Madelene, who did a wonderful job predicting our futures! Now all we had left to do was Graduate! 94 95 ° ay ! ° ey GRADUATION a After persuading Mr. Brunelle, we moved gradua- tion outside! The ceremony began in bright sunshine with our undivided attention given to Nan and Patty. Axel and Javier next spoke of their year in Millis, followed by Mr. Vellante who was the featured speaker. As Mr. Brunelle started the awards and scholarships most everyone noticed a huge black cloud formation heading our way! He had just finished when the rain egan to pour! As everyone began to run to the gym, a double rainbow appeared in the sky behind the gradu- ates! What a sight! The rest of the scholarships were given out in the gym along with the presentation of diplomas. This was a graduation that will not be forgotten! VALEDICTORIAN Throughout our years in school, each of us has read a large variety of books. There were fiction and non-fiction, long and short, simple and in- tricate, exciting and boring. For as many of these varying styles of books, there are just as many varying styles of lives. As our diplomas are q presented to us tonight on our NANETTE BOSSE graduation, we are also granted the opportunity and challenge to become the author of our Own unique and original life story. The first part, which consisted of many exciting and suspense filled chapters, has ended. In it we have all shared the common setting of Millis and the Millis schools. Through education, sports, music, and travel, we have built lasting relationships and have gathered invaluable experience and knowledge for future endeavors. Most importantly, however, in these early chapters we have acquired the writing and life skills to proceed on our own. As an autobiographer each of us has control over what is printed on the remaining empty pages. We should each see to it that our individual tales are the most satisfying and inspiring we have ever read. With the beginning of each new section, we should plan our rising action with a climax in sight. At the same time we should never fear inspiration from outside sources. The thickening sub-plots should be a combination of hard work, hard play, laughter, and love. For some of us, the next chapters will portray hard work in the mode of a college educa- tion, for others it will be in the armed services or the working world. To balance the serious side of this masterpiece, you, as the author, must venture out discovering new characters and developing new action. Hobbies and friends add a different dimension and some intrigue. No matter what your endeavor, an open mind, enthusiam, and optimism will attract new readers to your life. Hopefully, in each autobiography there will be few developments. But as the format of the novel dictates, there is usually a conclusion after a particularly exciting climax. When you reach these turning points in your personal accounts, don’t throw in your pen and waste the time and effort you have already put into your work. The saga must continue! Turmoil, mystery, and conflict create anticipation, and the resolution creates an inspirational hero or heroine. As with all books, some are long and some are short. Because we are unsure at this time of the length of our own, we should always continue writing to the best of our ability keeping the plot resurgent and the theme motivating. A conscious effort towards these goals will yield complete self-satisfaction when the in- evitable moment arrives to retire. If we all keep in mind the in- spirational theme of an unknown author, our published book will definitely produce a best seller and success because: “To live your life in your own way... to reach for the goals you have set for yourself. . . to be the you that you want to be — that is success.” | hope each of you finds challenge and enjoyment in writing your autobiography realizing your theme to the utmost! SALUTATORIAN Reverend Clergy, Members of the School Committee, Mr, Vellante, Mr. Khachadoorian, Mr. Brunelle, Faculty, Family, and Friends .. . tonight we are participating in Commence- ment Exercises. Commence- ment means a beginning. For my classmates and myself, if means the beginning of acom- —_ pletely new stage of life. Many PATRICIA INGRAHAM of us will suddenly be thrown into a group of strangers, cast into very unfamiliar surroundings, and compelled to try unusual, different things. Such situations lead to anxiety. This reminds me of the week | spent at Mas- sachusetts Girls’ State last June. Upon my arrival, | was cram- med into an auditorium with over 250 girls — all of them stran- gers. None of us knew quite what to expect or what to do. This situation brought on anxiety. However, our first speaker allevi- ated that anxiety by offering us several principles by which he tries to live. | would like to extend these Five Points for Success and Happiness especially to my fellow classmates. 1. WORK HARD Always do more than what is expected. A promotion to Vice President is good but it is not good enough. ALWAYS strive for the top. PLAY HARD Play to win, but play by the rules. Recreation and fun are essential to both body and mind. LAUGH HARD Relax. When everything seems to be going wrong and you find yourself in the face of adver- sity — just laugh. Laughing casts away all anxiety. CARE DEEPLY Take the time to talk with others. Be patient and be a good listener. In the long run it makes you a better person. KEEP GOING Don't quit. Quitting does not produce success. If anyone ever tells you that you can't do some- thing, it should make you try even harder to show him you can. Have confidence in yourself and aim for pure self satisfaction. And keep going. My fellow classmates, if you do not retain in your memories any of my speech up to this point, PLEASE remember what! am about to say now. It may sound simple, but it is the theory that enables me to stand here before you tonight as Salutatorian. It does not matter how much you have, its how you put it to work. Take the potential you have and push it to the limit. DON'T waste what you have. Work hard, play hard, laugh hard, care deeply, and most importantly — keep going. Quitters never gain success or happiness. 2. 3. 4. 5. All of you helped me to take jture. isS you all. Thank you. 617 pm ‘llante, Mr. Khachadoorian, Mr. Brunelle. School Committee, ‘SS P aul ’ ind Honored Guests: it has been ten months since when | came . ve. Itseems to me that it was yesterday when | arrived to a town Flowers of Quet heard about before, where a different language was spoken, ana wnere | uiu riut nriuw anybody. Of course, | was full of doubts. | hoped that they would disappear someday. | was wondering whether this year would be a success or a failure. As | thought, America was for me a whole different new world. The school was different, and the way Of life was different from the one in Spain. Because of this, | had it a bit difficult in the beginning to adapt myself to the American way Of life or to the American culture generally. Fortunately, little by little, | began to adapt myself, so now, | can Say that this year in America has been a success in all ways, first of all, because my English has improved, and second. because now | know the mechanisms of the American culture, and | know many nice American people. JAVIER SANTOS Of course, | have not done this success myself. For this success there has been many people who have helped me. First of all, my American family, the Foley family, they have been a great help to me. | have been very fortunate that I have been with them. All year long, they have helped me to improve my English and what is more important, to understand in the American culture. | will never be able to forget Mr. and Mrs. Foley as well as Jim and Lynda. Jim, apart from being my brother, has probably been my best friend in the United States. We have had our good times and not so good times, but he has always been with me when | have needed him, to take me somewhere or for any other thing. He showed me everything around here, and he helped me to get my English better. He has really been nice to me. | hope that the next exchange students that will be coming to Millis, will be as fortunate as | have been. | want to thank my parents, Bill and Jean Foley, for hosting me in their house all this year, and | hope to see them again. Second, | have received a lot of help from my AIFS counselor in Millis, Mrs. Paur. When | have hada Problem in school, | have always found her ready to help me. | want to thank Mrs. Paur for her help. Then, in the school, all the teachers gave me a hand with my subjects when | neededit. especially Mr. Hoffman, Mr. Dooling, and Mr. Glass. About my fellow students, all of them have been very nice to me. This is why | have enjoyed coming to school everyday. All of them have helped me, but in school life, two boys helped me mostly. These are Chuck Shearns and Jim Waclawik. | want to thank both of them and all the other students for being so nice to me. Well, | have enjoyed my stay in Millis very much. | have to say that | have hardly ever seen sucha big hospitality as the one of Millis. | have been to some other towns in Massachusetts and in some other states, and | have not found sucha big hospitality at all. | have liked everything here, all the school activities, the sports, the Senior trip, the Senior play, the prom, and everything that has been going on around here in Millis. | think that the school life is better here than in Spain, and it is too bad. Because of all these things that | have said, | would recommend to anybody to come to America to study for a year, especially to come to Millis. Well, it has been very nice to meet you all, and | hope to see you again some other year. 101 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 1985 CENTENNIAL CLASS MILLIS CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE Congratulations to the Class of 1985 Millis Booster Club Congratulations to the Class of '85 especially Patty!
