As Chief of the Millis Police Depart- ment for 22 years, he was a presence throughout most of our school years. A native of Millis and a member of the Millis High School Class of 1955. Chief Smith was no stranger to the happenings in Millis. With the admiration, not only from his peers, but also from an entire town. Chief Smith will not be forgotten. The only class to make the transition from Millis Junior-Senior High School to Millis Middle School and back to High School. you have certain- ly experienced an era of transition. In addition, you have recorded a first as you were the first class to get stuck with the Principal for a class advisor during your freshman year and one of the first classes to experience the negative aspects of “proposition 2xh . Despite turmoil and change in your educational lives, you have adjusted well and rank among the best and most spirited classes to pass through Millis High School. I sincerely hope that the changes which you’ve experi- enced have served to strengthen your adaptability to changing times, and this flexibility will carry over into future situations, making you the better for it. I have found that those whom I have met offered a very important education in a different sense. In the past years I have learned that every individual plays an important role in education. I have met students who have shown me my true potential and I have met teachers who have introduced powerful ideas that have changed the way I think and behave. There is a lesson to be learned from each person, no matter how intelligent or ignorant she or he at fiist seems. In every individual there is a wealth of philosophies, values, and ideas that cannot only help us to understand others better, but also to help us to understand ourselves as well. To learn these important ideas one must be willing to allow himself or herself to be open to new or different values. In the words of Stephens. “We often grow more by bending with the wind than by standing in rigid defiance. One who rejects somebody because of race. sex. religion, or handicap is often closing off a person who may be a powerful inspiration. To deny this possibility due to an unfounded bias is a sad mistake. To get the most from other people, you must overlook their minor faults in order to receive the enormous benefits they have to offer. Tonight I encourage my fellow graduates and all here to try to dismiss any prejudices you may have and become willing to accept the valuable lessons of those you meet. Become open to new ideas. Do not neglect your responsibilities to yourself and others, and believe in what you do. Strive for your dreams, and work hard to achieve your goals, but enjoy yourself as you go. Would the kids at school be friendly? Would I get along with my new parents in my new home? Now I can honestly say that everything is much nicer and the people are friendlier than I dared to hope. In the beginning my English was not that good, but now I think I am better because now I have learned all the •'awesome slang words you use here. First of all I want to thank Chrissie and Eddie very much for being such great parents to me during this year. I have had a lot of fun with them, and they have spoiled me really much, but I like that. 1 was very nervous at the beginning of the school year because everything was new. hut I got help from a nice girl. I want to thank Karen Diggins very much for helping me here the first days. She intro- | duced me to students and teachers and helped me learn my way around school. I have made many good friends here in Millis. but I have two really good friends here. One is Donna Barrett and I am glad I got to know her. The other is Maura Keaney, I want to thank her very much for being mv best friend. We had a lot of fun together, and I will always remember that. I also want to thank the whole family for treating me like a third daughter. Some of the special things that I have done, which I always will remember, are the trip to Florida, that was really an experience, especially meeting those American cockroaches, and prom night. It was fun to dress up and ride in .1 limosine. since we don't have either in Norway. I enjoyed all my classes, especially those of Mr. Doolingand Mr. Hoffman, but I think that my most favorite class was art with Mrs. Buima. We had a lot of fun I together. I want to thank all the teachers in the school and everybody in town who have been so nice to me. I am probably the first Norwegian girl to have 3 surprise birthday parties, to get married to Scott Belyea. and to have an egg baby. I am glad I came to Millis because it would not have been the same if I stayed anywhere else. Berit Skogen me CLASS HISTORY The year was 1971. The Vietnam War was the focal point of our international affairs. Richard | Nixon was the president. |ohn Denver was the hit musical sensation. Led Zeppelin released Led I Zeppelin IV the greatest rock album of all time, the waiter, the chicken and mashed potato were I the dance crazes and flower children proclaiming love and peace were everywhere. Dr. George C. 8 Roy was the Superintendent of Schools and Raymond Gehling was the Chairman of the School | Committee. It was in September of this year, that the class of '-84 began its thirteen year long B journey through Millis Public School System. We all have acquired many memories in the past B years. Some were good and some were bad. but the good memories definitely outweighed the bad I memories. It is these memories that we would like to share with you now. It all started in kindergarten, and depending on which school you were in. you either had Mr. (I Collins or Mr. Lanthier as a principal. Every class has their share of those people who never quite I make it to the bathroom and this class is no exception. It was SCOTT BEL YEA. this time, who was S on his way to the little boys' room, when unfortunately he only made it as far as DIANE STEEVES’ I desk Also, at this time of our lives, a certain SCOTT WOLPERT or more commonly known as I Wally, began to ask the BIG questions And to this day he still annoys Mrs. Russ with the. I have I one question. In first grade everyone was in the Clyde Brown School with Mr. Lanthier as our principal. Many ■ of us can recall being sent to the BENCH” espet ially MIKE COYLE. Also in first grade. SELENE I GOES and TERESA MACDONALD became best friends. Amazingly their friendship is still in jl: existence to this very day. In second grade DENISE BOl JCHER had such a crush on BRUCE WORKS, that when no one was ■ looking she pushed him against the blackboard and gave him a big kiss. Poor Bruce was too shocked H to react so he just stood there. Also, during recess some of the girls used to enjoy playing girls' ■ germs where MIKE BENNETT and GLENN IVORY were the prime targets. Also, in this year we t began to learn of ERIC HAGAN’s mischievous ways. He and RON MCKENNEY recorded the bell on ft a tape recorder and played it ten minutes before their class was supposed to end. You wise guys!!!! H We also reinember the unfortunate accident that GREG PICKLESIMER had at the playground that 11 year. The poor kid's nose will never be the same. In the third grade we became a part of the Memorial School Annex with Mr. Begley as our ■ principal In this year we got a glimpse of CHERYL PAYNE's cheerleading abilities when she I performed a gymnastic routine for Mrs. Clancy's c lass. Cheryl also got a glimpse of LYDIA JOYCE I and SAM CLAIR's mean and cruel side, especially the time when they decided to give Cheryl a 2 . karate chop and ended up giving the poor girl a dislocated knee. Luckily. MARYLOU DWYER 1 fixed everything. To get back at the two meanies she said that she would personally kill Lydia I and Sam. But. this argument did pass and they all became friends once again The fourth grade brought to our attention those who were musically talented. Though 90% of the ■ class began to play an instrument, most of us didn't make it too far up the musical ladder Right ■ . I.ance. Bonny, and Bells????? In this year STEPHANIE PICKLESIMER became notorious for throw- I ing out her retainer in the lunchroom's trash. No one can ever forget those words. But I know it 8 must be in here somehwere 5th grade brought us back to the Memorial School once again with a new principal. Dr. Lawrence I Aronstien. Each morning before school, we had our question of the day from Dr. A. It was EILF.EN I MURPHY who answered 9 our of the 13 questions for Mrs. Carvhallo's class so they could go on the ■. field trip to Lincoln Park. I do believe that Emily MCCANN'S stomach remembers that fun filled day i at Lincoln Park. Especially in the arcade after riding the Round-up for the last time. It was in this I year that we tried to drive Mr. Lynch crazy by simultaneously dropping our pencils and hooks to '( the floor on the hour and every hour. Also. ALEX KUBACKI set a school record for eating 17 apples V during one lunch period, but unfortunately he was seen later running to the nurse's station with his m hand on his stomach. 6th grade brought on our ''Group Guidance sessions with Dr. A. During one of these marvel- W lous sessions. MICHAEL TRAVERS left an unforgetable odor which amused his classmates B immensely. One day Mrs. Martin's class was working with clay, but naturally most of it ended up on the ceiling and the substitute teacher left the room crying hysterically. In this year was our famed j 6th grade play. Thp Wonderful Tang, starring STEVEN SMITH and ERIN REILLY. Hut. it was our I field trip to Elbanobscot that was the highlight of this particular year. Many different incidents | happened on this trip. The first was when KIM FREESE was carried out of her bedroom by Dr. A toa a car where she was transported to the hospital. And to this day we still don't know what really V happened. How could anyone forget when MAURA KEANEY’s Dressie Bessie was kidnapped? I - Luckily it was returned for a small ransom for Maura couldn't function properly without it. Then I - there was the kiss scene between RKRKCCA MUSHNICK and her pillow who was supposed to be I -' BRUCE WORKS 7th grade brought us finally to the lunior High School where we were allowed to carefully mingle Ihi' with the big and older high school students. This was the year that Rebecca decided not to be a part I of society any longer. She enjoyed sitting in Mr. Richard's science class doing nothing which I-: became her favorite pastime for the next 5 years. We had a blast being a high school student, then I came the extremely big let down. In the 8th grade we took a huge step back to the immature Middle School with Dr. A as our I principal once again. Believe me our class did not like this idea at all!!!!! It was in this year that we I had many. many. many. many. many, many riots which drove the art teacher. Miss Buke to actually I -• leave. Of course there was the day. Black Friday, when Dr. A refused to serve lunch because of the I pending food fight. Until Kim Kubacki spoke her mind, eventually we were allowed to have our lunch. For those who were interested there was always Bubble Time on Fridays where we could I-1 106 f participare in different groups. We still had our group guidance meetings. I but now Dr A had his touch sessions. Hey Eileen, is this a positive or negative touch? . Oh knock it off Sam Also in 8th grade, we had a 9 huge going away party for C1NDI STATLER who was going to move. The ] funny part is that she came back to Millis a couple of weeks later. Maybe g she was looking for another party or something. 8th grade also brought i about the huge fights at the top of the hill next to the bandstand. Remem- '? ber those old words? Meet me after school at the top of the hill! Tough 1 people, weren’t we??? One day in the end of the eight grade in Algebra I class, something Mrs. Gately was teaching finally sunk into PAT TRAV- I ERS’ head I get it’,’, he yelled. Two is T. and T is Two. I actually learned something this year. At this he jumped on his desk and started singing. I Two is T and T is Two . Soon the whole class was on their desks singing , and dancing. At the close of our 8th grade year, we entered our freshman if year with a black cloud hanging low over our heads. It seemed that some of ; the teachers, the principal and others were dreading the fact that our class ' was entering the high school. We had apparently picked up a bad reputa- if tion in our one year in the Middle School. Well anyways, in our freshman year MIKE TRAVERS took over and became our very successful class president BILL MANCINI entered the [ class, but unfortunately his good looks couldn't do much for the freshman I football team that went 0-8 that year, while the varsity team went on to become the division 4 champs, and to win the superbowl Also that year. | the last Millis football team which had KEVIN HENDERSON. MARK % COUSLAND. MIKE VANTHIEL and others on it. were cheered on by the very last freshman cheerleading squad The squad consisted of KATHY I VANROEKEL. USA BURKE. NORANN NOON. IUL1E SINATRA. IO- .‘j ANNE STARK and others. CHRIS SOL!ZA got his nickname in the 9th grade With the help of an older band member. Chris was taught how to hit a pebble with his trumpet, hence the name Reggie. During a basketball game DEBBIE MCCOLL was about to throw the ball inbounds when she heard everyone yelling, ’’shoot, shoot! , so she shot the ball, unfortunately she was still out of bounds. Deb didn't get the basket anyways. Our freshman i year also introduced many of us to the high school party life. In our sophomore year not too much happened except that ALFRED ' BOLZANI amazed us with his incredible tennis skills. JUDY BURNETT and CHARLENE ST CHARLES both became newcomers to our school [system, and KERRY CANNON became a free woman to party without her ' big brother Ted next to her side. Also many of us were extremely jealous of LYDIA IOYCE who was the 1st to get her license. The junior year brought out the best of JOHN HOURIGAN with his i' pinching crusades! Who will forget when ROB PROVOST became a male fashion model? One day he came to school wearing a very c hic pair of Cheryl Tiegs jeans, they were his mother's jeans but unfortunately he I didn't know it at the time. Then, in Miss Barry's French IV accelerated u class. Joanne. Diane. Maura. Eileen and Denise were so filled with the w Christmas spirit that they gave Miss O’donnell’s study hall an early I present. A string of cranberries and popcorn was lowered from the lai) I window. Yells of It’s a bird, it's a bird could be heard from the study | hall. To this very day loanne is still saying. It wasn't my idea Mr |! Dooling is a great teacher, but his junior history class was in for a big I surprise when he got a bloody nose. Instead of leaving the room to remedy the problem he stuck a tissue up his nose and continued to teach class. How gross!!! Also in the 11th grade Mr Vigue pleaded with STACEY GRIFFIN and JENN WOODARD to come to track practice but never suc- ceeded because they thought they were too good for practice. They def- initely proved their point as the year went on. DAVID MARIANO. KEVIN SMITH and BILL KERJVAN used to be such pains. They used to block poor Eileen's locker so she wouldn't be able to get her books, what a predicament!! Then there was our junior talent show starring MATT CILLIS and SAMANTHA CLAIR as our outstanding M.C's. Sam con- tinued into the next year with her speaking abilities so that we were all permitted to hear the mouth even1 morning. Please stand for 30 ■ seconds of silent meditation. Also during the talent show, we got to see MARY STEVENSON display her own version of flashdancing. Then there was the junior prom which was a complete success. JIMMY GILMARTIN and CHERYL PAYNE were crowned king and queen of the prom. After an evening of dancing and fun we all proceeded to the cape. Boy what a bash. I bet everyone remembers that day. The 12th grade, our senior year, and our final year left us short a few band members. People like KARIN MCCANDLESS. DEBBIE SULLIVAN. JOE NOBREGA. and NORANN NOON were the smart ones to get out U-fore “T went to the extreme. A highlight of this year was The Clumsy | Custard Horror Show, our senior play. DAVID DEMARZO. BILL MAN I ONI, SCOTr BELYEA. GREG PICKLESIMER. MATT CILLIS and STEVE SMITH were really showing it ail with their short tunics. Nice legs guys. Other different performances were given by KELLY BEYER. LISA BURKE, and BETH WHITE as the horrible and terrifying Clumsy Custard. KAREN DIGCINS and IULIE RUBINO sure had alot of trouble with props in the senior play, especially a certain table and tree. One event in our senior year will never be forgotten. It happened on Halloween and STEVE RAVVDING and others will never forget their eveving in an enclosed room. But this subject must not be discussed any longer. Also, in our senior year. JEFF JOHNSTON impressed us all by being a key factor in the vocal jazz with his superior performances. The purpose of this group was to serenade Mr Valois with old Rolling Stone's tunes in the back of the actminting class We also remember STORK A'sSS Minow. MICHAEL COUSINS and SKIP KELLY became known for their two incredible bomber truc ks. SUE MAEL and |OANNE DAESEN kept their kind personality over all the years we have known them. RUTH HAGEARTY. MICHELE DOUGANS. CHERYL PAYNE. MARY STEVENSON, and DONNA DIF ZTAL thought that they were so smart that they graduated , year MARYLOU DYWER and MIKE CALLAHAN def- initely made the cutest and sweetest couple through our high school years IENN' WOODARD. KERRY SMITH, and HEIDI SMITH became known for their chewing. And Kerry came to the school with extremely long haii. then it went from here to here to here and finally here. Where is it going next Kerry? The notorious MIKE ROWEAN became known for his famous Skip party And two exchange students came to our town this year. One was jorge Lanza and another was a girl named BER1T SKOCEN. She impressed us all with her incredible sweater knitting skills. Then came one of the biggest and most controversial events of the year THE FLORIDA TRIP!!'!! 32 of us went under the guidance of Denise Brown and George Pappadapilis or was the Pappalipili? We had an extremely awe- sometime Ask NANCY D'ERAMO about the 1st night. It just happened to be Nancy's birthday and according to her it was the best birthday ever. In Florida we had total freedom to do anything we wanted to. MICHELLE FRESH. COLLEEN SCULLY and JOANNE STARK really took full advan- tage of the freedom and enjoyed themselves. The Florida trip sure put a big smile on KATHY WILKENS' face one night when she was sleeping. Emily and Samantha will always remember GJ and RA. And Lisa, how's Smit- ty????? We all came home with sunburns (ask Wally about his), headaches, souveniers and lots of memories. PAT TRAVERS will always remember when Mrs. Russ' advanced English class told him the real story of the Japanese Quince. The rain put a damper on the class trip, but some of us managed to find a little sunshine of our own. KIM FREESE and KELLY RILEY came horne with many ribbons and TOM HOWARD and Bells successfully maneuvered their canoe without oven tipping it over. Even JOE ARNOLD and MATT BERGEN showed up for the rainy trip. JANE LACROIX and ELLEN ROSKEY were singing anything imaginable on the bus until they were drowned out by ERIN FAY and JANICE VOI.PA who turned the Billy Idol up. At our senior banquet. AUDRA UEVENS showed up ready to boogev. TERRY MACDONALD came dressed up extremely nice with Lisa by his side. LAURA POWER came with MIKE TRAVERS. RANDY RYDER came with his girlfriend named Candy. BAR- BARA SOMERS showed up with a gorgeous dude. KIM WHITE came to the trip and banquet with pneumonia, and STEVE ROBINSON just came. Also at the banquet we saw the exotic side of DENISE BOUCHER who couldn't resist flashing her stuff on a table top. (The Lady in Red!!). Oh my goodness. look at the time, we could go on forever with all the millions of things our class has done in the past, but time definitely doesn't permit. A few places and people, however, which will always linger on in our memories are: The sunroom. the back parkinglot. Van's. Rowie's. Denise's cast party, the swallows. Ms. McKay. Bruno. Pentade. and the Cape. The year is now 1984 and we have come to end of our Millis High School years.
