During our years at M.H.S.. Mr. Arcudi dem- onstrated strong leadership and positive guidance to all of us. As seniors, may we have the same strength and courage to face our new beginnings as Mr. Arcudi did. Inside that tough exterior lies a warm, caring individual with many outstanding qualities. Mr. Brunelle. Faculty. Parents. Relatives, and Friends. On behalf of The Class of 1983. I would like to welcome you here. We, The Class of 1983. would like to thank our parents for their guidance, help, and sacrifice during the last eighteen years. Also the teachers whose knowledge, patience, and understanding have enabled us to be here tonight. I am proud to be a member of the Millis High School Class of 1983. We have done many things together during the past four years, and we have proven we have what it takes to graduate. Tonight our class meets for the last time as a whole. We have had a long and hard thirteen-year struggle to complete one stage of our lives. Now we must go our separate ways. As we go on. we should have quiet pride in our current successes and continue to develop our own indi- viduality. We should be proud to be different: following the crowd is a weakness. We must put peer pressure aside and learn to think and speak for ourselves. Like Robert Frost, we should not be afraid to take the less traveled road. Set goals. Don't be afraid to aim high and then proceed to accomplish these goals. Know yourself and what you want to become. The success in achieving one's goals will lead to further goals and will also further develop one's indi- viduality. Fellow classmates, as we go our individual ways, we should strive to be ourselves. Indeed, there is an obvious correlation between we the graduating students and you the dedicated parents and instructors. Finding the appropriate words to convey our thanks for your many years of devotion is simply a task in itself, but let me say this: there can be no substitute for the determined and continued support of c aring par- ents. who have stood behind and beside each and every one of us. and teachers, who have given us the foundation on which we can build. As Henry Adams said, A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops. Today more than ever we should appreciate the privilege of public education, rather than find fault with the teaching profession or educational system. We must remember schools were created for our benefit. It is up to us to put forth the time and effort. Our destiny is controlled by our willingness to strive to reach new heights. If we are to be productive, our attitude will he crucial. If our attitude is good, we will obtain good results. If it is negative, we will be preventing ourselves from achieving our best. The way tin world treats us is often no more than a reflection of our own attitude. At this point in our lives most ot us are wondering what lies ahead. Will the coming years show small steps in accomplishment or large strides in achievement? Much of our fate. I believe, will be contingent on our motivation and our ability to seize opportunities. We must set forth with the proper attitude and our efforts must lie persistent ami unyielding. Each of us here tonight possesses unique potential. We all have the ability to achieve. My hope today is that you will not settle for someihing less than you can be. Reach unimaginable heights. In closing 1 would like to say that the focal point of success is knowledge. As Ben Franklin once proclaimed, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. so if we are to prosper we must equio ourselves with the implements of sm cess. Those win� expect to excel in life's endeavors without beginning with education are de- ceiving themselves. Knowledge is power! VALEDICTORIAN Stephen Mercer 118 AFSSTUDENT Reverend Clergy, members of the School Committee. Mr. Vellente. Mr. Bninelle. Faculty. Parents and Friends. When 1 first came to Miliis I needed a lot of help. I didn't know anybody and I felt like a stranger. Once school started I found out it is very easy to make friends in Millis. Joining a sports team is a good way to meet people. We weren't too successful with our basketball or soccer teams, but I had fun and met some terrific guys like Mike Mortimer. Todd Vinton and Danny Hagearty. After a few months went by. I realized what a nice little town Millis really is. Everybody knows everybody else and you can always find your friends somewhere. I got to know the language better and could even understand Mr. Tuohev’s History classes. After all. I have learned a lot about myself as well as America and Americans. I especially want to thank my dear mum and mv sister Bonnie who made my stay in Millis a lot more comfortable. Germany 119 iMfc. FAMOUS FINAL SCENE 120 171 Kelley and Tom CLASS HISTORY The year was 1970. Hippie cultures had reached their peak. The Vietnam War was raging. The Beatles were breaking up. Gasoline cost 40c a gallon. And Richard Nixon was the President of the United States. It was the beginning of a thirteen-year journey for the future Millis High School Class of 1983. We are proud to say that we belong to this class. We have many memories. Some we cherish and will remem- ber always. Some we'd rather forget. Some of these memories, the good and the bad, are worthy of being shared with you now. It all started in kindergarten, when do-gooders JOHN HENDERSON and ROB ZONFRELLI volunteered to take the attendance list down to Mr. Collins’ office. They spent the rc?st of the day trying to find their i way back to class. In first grade. GREC BURBANK terrorized us all bv flipping his eyelids inside out. even though the school nurse told him that his eyes would fall out if he kept doing it. This showed us what to expect from Greg in later years. This was also the year that |ILI. FRASCA was given the nickname Mrs. Beasley. Our violent nature was brought out in second grade when BOB ROWEAN led our vicious boys in gang warfare during recess. CHUCK COSTA showed us why he never made an encore stage appearance after he portrayed Santa Claus and his reindeer dumped him off his sled, leaving him in tears in front of the whole school ROB RHYNE j and KELLEY SMITH also made their stage debuts as Uncle Sam and Mother Nature that same year. We started our athletic competitiveness in third grade with our daily kickball games between JOHN ALGER’S Tornados”, and TOM J VOGT’S “Blue lavs . These heated battles were the cause of many j disagreements, and the Blue lays always dominated these contests. Fourth grade brought on new frontiers in our choice of cuisine, I when SUE CHISOLM found that although Chap-Stick might taste I good, it doesn't exactly agree with your stomach. Shu sure knew how I to clear a room fast!! Fifth grade wouldn’t have been complete without our trip to Saugus I Iron Works. The bus ride was more exciting, and we made our teacher I more than aware that we didn’t quite agree with her idea of a good I time. It was that same year we managed to drive our beloved art I teacher. Russell Cilfoy. to the brink of insanity. Sixth grade brought out our hidden talents with our production of I Mirror. Mirror , starring KRISTI COSTA as the loveable Snow White, I GAIL PURkIS as the wicked queen, HEIDI SHORT as the mirror, and I many other talented classmates in major roles. GREG BURBANK, as the singing troubador managed to keep his eyelids in place tor the I performance. Another memorable field trip was to Higgin’s Armory. | where they wouldn't let us touch any of the armor because they | thought it would disintegrate from the chemicals in our fingertips. Of g course, some of us had to find out for ourselves. Finally, the time came for the big move from the Memorial School to I the almighty High School. Actually for us it was only seventh grade I and Junior High School. DONNY TIBERI. PATTY MACINNES, and I MAUREEN SAVAGE will long be remembered as singing clowns in ! the Minstrel Show. TOMMY INGRAHAM was so excited about BON- NIE PAUR’s party that he showed up with a bottle of Pepsi a week i early. Bonnie's party was first in a long line of many more to come. We started off our eighth grade year with a bang, as DOUG ANDREWS cleared the hallway of flies, but filled it with broken glass. DIANNE COLLINS showed what a Millis High School education really does to your mind when in MACOS class she asked Mr. Fair who built __ —vuaav via 1 U|V V!l li i i'l.'A I l MVA V I I S-i, and TOM CARTER got off on the wrong foot with Mr. Fair when they were unjustly accused of stealing the gas cap off his bright orange Datsun. limbo has just recently confessed that he actually forgot to put the cap back on while filling his tank. Our Freshman football team will long be admired for their impressive 0-8 record. PAUL SMI TH will never be forgiven for blowing our one chance for a victory, and DAN HAGEARTY's touchdown, by clipping on a kick- off return. But don't worry Paul, we forgive you!!! That same game was also a fond memory for ANN LEVEN- SON. She was tackled by a Bellingham player while cheering from the sidelines. Who ever said cheering wasn’t a contact sport? MARK OZZIE” ANGELO will cherish his sopho- more year, even though he spent half of it tied up by the varsity basketball team. We know that managing a team is time consuming, but two hours locked in a closet is too much. Ozzie. LISA O’BRIEN expressed her opinion about the book she was reading and interrupted the silence of English class without even opening her mouth. A new door was opened to us in our junior year with the discovery of driving. CHUCK ’CRASH” COSTA led off the hit parade with his daring driving on Ridge Street. We all laughed, but little did we know, it was just the beginning. SARAH HERNON. HEIDI SHORT. KEVIN HURLEY. STEPHEN SMITH. BOB ROWEAN. and even vours truly all had their moments, but the most impressive had to be ROB ZONFRELLI’s acrobatics over a guardrail. Later we found out it was just a publicity stunt to make the front page of the Milford Daily News. SARAH HERNON thought it was pretty funny when she kidnapped JOHN ALGER’s fuzzy-dice and held them for ransom. She didn’t think it was so funny when John kidnapped the tires off her car and held them for ransom. When she asked for them back. John just said “No dice!!! . Birthdays are supposed to be memorable, but for JEFF FERZOCO his seventeenth will be one he'll want to forget, after his friends carried him through the hall in his birthday suit. CRAIG SOUZA's political speeches better be cleaned up if he desires success. He’ll get no help from the janitors though, when in one of his speeches, he pro- posed banishing them from the school. PETER HEALY showed us all why he was voted class clown when he showed up for school dressed as Cap- tain Chemistry”, complete with tights and a cape, in preparation for an oral presentation. PATTY MACINESS has different ways of presenting tier birthday wishes as she sang her rendition of Happy Birthday to Mrs. Cartier over the PA system. Her majesty KRIS PINKHAM began her reign over our :lass at our highly successful Junior Prom. The Home- coming Crown followed after that. Our Senior year was everything it was cracked up to e. and then some. Newcomer JENNY POWELL can be credited with keeping the class in top physical shape, as we spent a rainy Friday and Saturday night improving our racquetball skills at her court. KEVIN COLLINS supplied many of us with the necessary equipment . Pro Wrestling was brought inside the walls of Mr. Hoffman’s homeroom as MARK KRAVITZ and JEFF FERZOCO took our their frustrations by double-teaming CAREN DEPEDRO. Though Caren pleaded for them to stop, none of us took her seriously. MIKE MORTIMER proved that he had school spirit by sacrificing three-quarters of his hair in a Mohawk cut before the big Holliston game. GLORIA RICHARDSON’S return to our class at the banquet was less than spectacular until the familiar tune was belted out. and she was trapped on the dance floor. Our senior play A Second Chance , one of the best productions to ever go over in the school, was written and directed by two of our talented classmates, LAURIE DRAPER, and ROB ZONFRELLI. alias Ed and Eunice (yuk yuk yuk). We could goon forever about our adventures, but time will not permit. A few. however, which will always linger on are: the sunroom. the swallows, Donny’s pit. Bonnie's cellar, bumper-humping at hoop games. Li'l Peach, Mr. Brunelle’s pink suit. Mr. Fair’s patience with us (and vice-versa), and Gene Method. The year is now 1983. and the end of our journey. Hippie cultures have practically vanished. The United States is at peace. New Wave is setting the trend for the 80’s. Gasoline is now $1.30 a gallon. Ronald Reagan is our President. But. by far. the most monumental event of the year is the class of 1983 s permanent departure from Millis High School, and the party that will follow. We hope that this history was taken in the good humor in which it was intended. We wish the best of luck and many good times to the classes following us. The story behind the picture is one girl’s Yearbook saga. This picture started out simply as one of a hundred baby pictures. Due to the abundance of pictures submitted, there was one picture left after all the others had been glued in place. Sad. but true. The question logically arose. IVhat to do with a leftover baby picture? Leaving it out was clearly unthinkable. A person who shall remain nameless (her initials are S.H.) suggested a puzzle sort of guessing game. It involved cutting the picture into itty-bitty pieces and pasting the pieces onto other pictures throughout the section. Well. Mrs. Hunt was sure neither the baby in question nor her parents would be thrilled about a mutilated picture, so that idea was squashed. JS.H.. however, persisted in pleading for her idea until the pages went to press. She has never forgiven Mrs. Hunt for thwarting her idea, and is now plotting revenge. Our next idea was to use the baby picture on the Special Awards page because we didn't have another picture of this person to put in as her Girls' State recognition. The person in question fouled up this idea by supplying us with a Girls’ State picture at the very last minute.
