Millikin held that education to meet the demands of an ever increasing industrial- ized society should include both profes- sional and practical learning along with the traditional liberal arts fields. Thus made legal stipulations concerning the in- stitution he was responsible for founding. His first requirement was that this univer- sity be one where the scientific, the practical and the industrial shall have a place of equal importance, side by side, with the literary and the classical. He also stressed that the policy of the school would not narrowly be ' sectarian ' and it should be conducted on a broad plane in which all will be treated alike, regardless of sect or creed. From such visions and dreams of one man, Millikin University was established. Today, Millikin offers five undergraduate degrees in the College of Arts and Sci- ences, the Tabor School of Business and Engineering, the College of Fine Arts and the School of Nursing. Approximately 1500 students are now en- rolled in the university ' s four year pro- gram. The 1984-85 academic season wel- comed the largest freshman class in the school ' s illustrious history. The university is constantly changing and growing to meet the ever increasing de- mands of the diverse student body. Staley Library, a thoroughly modern structure, was completed in 1977-78 to replace the outdated Gorin facility. Staley currently contains not only 160,000 volumes, but also houses a media center, a writing center, audio-visual classrooms, a 24 hour study area, a working darkroom, study carols and lounges, a computer center is located in Lower L.A. 6 This Is It
