DR. ARTHUR E. GERHART Dr. Arthur IT. Gerhart resigned from the faculty of this college on June 1, 1955, after serving 27 years as a teacher of botany and biology and as head of the Natural Science Department. It i to him, in recognition of his guidance, his friendship and his service to the college, that this issue of the TOUCHSTONE is dedicated. A native of Bedford, Pennsylvania, he is a graduate of Bucknell Academy, holds u Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State College, a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. Although descended from several generations of ministers, he chose teaching as his profession. He held several positions in high schools and college before settling at Millersville soon after the college was converted from a state normal school. Dr. Gerhart witnessed and took part in many changes in the college, both in curriculum and physical equipment. He became the first head of the Department of Natural Sciences after the sciences were departmentalized and served in that capacity for the final decade of his association with Millersville. Dr. Gerhart’s first interest was always in science and there was something about this interest that was contagious. Students found him to be widely read and well informed in many areas, and consequently enjoyed his lectures and conversations immensely. His extensive knowledge was mixed with a high degree of understanding and patience, and his very sense of humor made any hour in his classes pleasant as well as informative. As a teacher, » • he may well serve as a model to any Millersville student regardless of the student’s fields of interest. A man of depth and breadth in knowledge and understanding, a master of the use of language, a wise and kindly advisor, a man of rare good humor, Dr. Gerhart will never be forgotten by his students and associates. His presence is missed by those who were here during his stay, ami it is felt that those students yet to come will be deprived of a unique and enlightening experience in not being able to attend his classes. 7
