Best began Millersburg Training School in the buildings of Kentucky Wesleyan College. Five years later, the school became Millersburg Military Institute. Colonel Best sold the property in 1920 to the Bourbon County Board of Education. In that same year, seven citizens formed a stock company to continue MMI and purchased Forest Hill, home of Sanford Allen, which had been built in 1851. The following year, Moffett Hall was erected as a dormitory and armory. Additionally, in 1931, the Board of Directors bought Millersburg Female College and established the MMI Junior School. Since 1944, MMI has been a non-profit school affiliated with the Reserve Officers Training Corps Program. Today, as Kentucky's official military school, it is co-educational and includes grades six through twelve. It is the people and events of MMI's 95th year that are depicted in this 1987-88 edition of the Sniper. JAMES MEREDITH COMBS Hazard, Kentucky Buck Sargeant. Senior Class Secretary. The criteria for this nomination was academic achievements, personal accomplishments and the pride each school may have toward their nominee. The first week of competition. Cadet Eddie Mulvaney took the award with Cadet Devin Perkins winning two weeks later. We know MMI would have had more winners, but the program was dropped in October 87. The family was on its way to a Christmas party in Frankfort when the accident occurred. Iona Todd, 40, of 2171 Clifton Road, died of multiple injuries at the University of Kentucky Chan- dler Medical Center, state police said yesterday. Her son, Kric Todd, died at the scene of the accident. The car’s driver and father of the family, William Todd, was in stable condition last night at King’s Daughters Memorial Hospital, said a hospital spokeswoman. The accident occurred at 3:55 p.m., six miles south of Frankfort near the Franklin-Anderson County line. Police said William Todd was northbound on U.S. 127 in Franklin County when he lost control on the wet road. His car was struck by a south- bound truck driven by Louanne Shelburne, 31, of I.awrenceburg. She was treated at King’s Daugh- ters Memorial Hospital and dis- missed after the accident. Todd’s sister, Barbara Roark of Versailles said Todd had cuts on his head, a fractured nose and “a broken heart.” She said the Todds were on their way to Autumn’s Restaurant in Frankfort for Mrs. Todd’s office Christmas party. Mrs. Todd worked as a secre- tary at a doctor’s office in Ver- sailles, she said. Dr. David T. Allen of I wrence- burg Clinic said Mrs. Todd had recently moved from his office to the office of Dr. Kenneth E. Hines in Versailles. “She was a hard worker, he said, referring to Mrs. Todd. “A delightful lady, who was a commit- ted mother and a really proud grandmother.” Allen said he was on his way to the office Christmas party Saturday when the hospital called about the accident. He treated Todd. Police have said none of the victims was wearing seat belts. “1 wish she’d have been wearing one,” Allen said. I think it could have changed things for her. I don’t think it would have made a differ- ence for her son, though.” Allen said Mrs. Todd was sit- ting in the passenger seat and Eric Todd was in the back, which was crushed in the accident. Eric was junior at Millersburg Military Institute, Mrs. Roark said. “He was a very good kid. He was involved in just about every- thing, and he was well thought of,” said James Vicars, MMI president. The 71 students at the live-in schcx)l went on Christmas break Friday, and some called Vicars when they heard about the fatal accident, he said. Mrs. Todd is survived by her husband; a daughter, Lisa Todd of Lawrenceburg; a son, Lonnie Todd of California; a granddaughter, Amanda Todd of California; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I.on Cox of California; her maternal grandfa- ther, Gene Tinnelle of BardstoWn; four sisters and two brothers. Eric Todd is survived by his father, sister, brother; his niece; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Todd of Versailles; his maternal grandparents; and his maternal great-grandfather. Joint services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Duell and Clark Funeral Chapel in Versailles. Visi- tation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today. Graveside services will l e at 2 p.m. Tuesday at l-eavenworth Cem- etery in b-avenwortli, Ind.
