Jims® a ® jS3$ea 1981 ® £©3Ca®3 38 TO THE CLASS OF 1981 Mark Twain, that wise old sage of yesteryear, told the following story which I believe is very appropriate her e: When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. In your quest for learning listen to the great poets, study the great statesmen, work with the great thinkers, the great writers, the great historians, and Stand Firm with the moral teachings of the great saints. And, like the boy in the story, you too may become wise. Adieu, my great friends, adieu! JOHN H. COLBAUGH' Pres ident matt Millersburg Military Institute MILLERSBURG. KENTUCKY 40348 (606) 484-3352 To our Graduates, Students, and Patrons: It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the faculty, administration and Board of Trustees, to offer most sincere congratulations and best wishes to the Graduating Class of 1981. This class distinguished itself by providing the leadership necessary for a reinvigorated MMI. I know the students will continue to demonstrate their many abilities in all their future endeavors. I wish them well. The school year 1980-81 was a turning point with the employment of a new president. We were more selective in enrolling only those students who we felt would benefit most from what MMI has to offer. Academics were geared to offering the basics and fundamentals with each faculty member challenging each student to perform to his highest abilities. The military department and military discipline were strengthened. Our athletic program and the quality of school life were excellent. The Class of '81 was instrumental in making it all work. In these days of mediocrity in most things, MMI will continue to provide the best educational programs for those students who desire to participate in the unique programs we offer. Class of '81, we will miss you. Students and patrons, we thank you for your continuing support. Rest assured that your school will continue to produce citizens who can and will contribute much to our Country and our way of life. Most sincerely, a® jW3 HAROLD R. LETTON, JR. For over eighty-eight years, MMI has been an integral part of Millersburg. In 1893, after Kentucky Wesleyan College had been moved to Winchester, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Meade Best, natives of Virginia, came through Millersburg. They were interested in what they saw, obtained the building and grounds from the Methodist Church Conference and opened Mil- lersburg Training School directly across the street from the present school. The buildings were in such bad state of repair that boarding students were not accepted until 1898 when they bought the property and changed the name to Millersburg Military Institute. During that summer, interested citizenry of Millersburg and Bourbon County held a public barbecue to raise funds to help buy uniforms, swords and guns for the 17 enrolled cadets for the fall term. According to a 1913 MMI Commencement ar- ticle, several thousand people attended the bar- becue. From then until the spring of 1920, Col. Best and “Miss Maggie” endeavored in every honor- able way to maintain a school of high scholar- ship and “to educate the youth in good letters and in good manners”. The motto for the school was (and is today) - Right Training Is Better than Riches. In the spring of 1920, Col. Best sold his building and grounds to the Bourbon County Board of Education for a high school. The cit- izens of Millersburg and Bourbon County then began to make plans whereby the school could be continued as one of the nation’s finest military schools.. During the year 1920-21, it was con- ducted by Col. Nelson in the old public school building. Seven Millersburg citizens formed a stock company, issued shares and in 1921 purchased “Forest Hill” built in 1851 by John Batterton for Mrs. William Nunn and then owned as a home by Sanfor Allen. With “Forest Hill” as a nucleus, it was proposed to develop MMI into one of the finest preparatory schools in the South. Buildings were erected in the summer and school was opened in the fall of 1921 with a good enrollment. Col. W. R. Nelson, who had served as com- mandant under Col. Best, was superintendent for thirty-three years, retiring in June 1953. In 1931, the MMI Board of Trustees bought the Millersburg Female College Campus three blocks from the Senior School Campus and estab- lished the MMI Junior School. In the spring of 1944, the school was or- ganized as a non-profit institution, with a per- petual charter and the governing in the hands of a Board of Trustees. In July 1948, the United States 55c Reserve Officers Training Corps program was installed. In January 1977, MMI went co-ed for day students. Girls had attended MMI before but not as cadets. In June 1953, Col. Leslie C. Blankenship became the third Superintendent of MMI and served in that position until June 1962. He was followed by Col. W. D. Haynes who was Super- intendent from 1962 to 1968. Col. Joseph R. Johnson was Superintendent from June 1968 to 1975. Col. Alvan C. Hadley was the next Super- intendent from June 1975 to 1980. Mr. John H. Colbaugh is the present Superintendent. During these years, MMI has worked not only toward scholarship and military proficiency but has participated in all sports and has attained championship status in practically every one. In addition to the fields previously mentioned, the music and speech departments have won their share of honors. 1981 sees Millersburg Military Institute con- tinuing to adhere to a tradition of excellence in academic and leadership training established in 1893. It is still her aim to develop the boys and girls of today into successful, self-disciplined, con- fident and responsible citizens of tomorrow. 31 Who's Who National Junior Honor Society National Honor Society Yearbook Staff Newspaper Staff 39 German Club Rifle Team Strategy Club Fishing Club Ping Pong 41 sharks FIELD TRIPS OFFICERS $ FOOTBALL CAMP FALL ATHLETIC BANQUET FOOTBALL- Senior Plaques:Rod Moore,David Messinger, Alonzo Linner, Bobby McCord,Ted Coleman,Ken Duncan,Mike Howard,John Hardy, Coach's Award: David Messinger, 110%:Rod Moore, Rhino:Neil LeMaster, Best Offensive Lineman:Ted Coleman, Best Offensive Back: Bobby McCord, MVP:Alonzo Linner, Most Improved Player:Duane Osborne, Co-CPT: Rod Moore,Ted Coleman, Best Defensive Lineman:Hosea Bynum, Best Defensive Back:Rod Moore SOCCER- 1st Goal:Dan Dampier, 1st Ass ist:Debbie Reed, Leading Scorer: Dan Dampier, Most Afraid of Head Balls:David Shaw, Most Improved Player :Todd Osborne, Most Valuable Player:Dan Dampier Letters: Mike Bozeman,Lewis Brown,Si Cleaver,Bryan Elam,Debbie Reed,Dan Dampier, Jody McClain,David Shaw,Mike Dampier JV Letters:Mike Brown,Mike Caicedo,Kyle Burchett,Chris Gist,Craig Russell,Ramon Smith,Chris Freeman,David Scott,Kelly Zimmer CROSS COUNTRY- Outstanding Runner:Keith Denier, Most Improved Runner: Rob Powell Bars: Jeff Wages,Brad Pena,Tab Smith,Mike Shaw,David Carse, Scott Eradley,David Shaw, Rob Powell, Keith Denier 46 SPRING ATHLETIC BANQUET WRESTLING- Letters:Chris Reitz,Jim Proctor,Lewis Brown,John Roetzel TENNIS- Letters:Jamie McNamara,David Scott,Kelly Zimmer,Rose Mary Stamler,John Roetzel,Jim Proctor,Craig Russell,Robert Reed,Brian Alkire BarsrJody McClain,Kelly Morgan,Mike Shaw,Alonzo Linner, 1st Position: Jody McClain, Most Improved:Mike Shaw, 1st Year Record:Alonzo Linner, Jim Proctor, Most Improved:Alonzo Linner,Brian Alkire(JV) BASEBALL- Individual Awards:All players.
