He was the son of one of the original backers of MMI's continuation in 1920, a descendant of the Miller Family, an MMI Trustee, president of the Farmers-Exchange Bank, Millersburg, a partner for 42 years in Millersburg Coal and Lumber Company, owner and operator of the Butler Insurance Agency, and Trustee and past chairman of the Board of the First United Methodist Church. Billy was interested in youth, and was a former Methodist Youth Leader and a Sunday School teacher, a former Boy Scout leader, and was an enthusiast particularly of MMI, the University of Kentucky, from which he graduated in 1938, Duke and the Cincinnati Reds. Mr. Butler was a concerned citizen and veteran of World War II who served as former president of the Millersburg Rotary Club, former member of the Bourbon County Draft Board and the Bourbon County Hospital Board, Councilman and Mayor of the City of Millersburg, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge Amity FxAM 40. A native of Millersburg, he was the son of the late William A. and Kate Miller Butler, and attended MMI from 7th grade until his graduation in 1933. When Mr. Butler became an Honorary Trustee of MMI, his wife Mrs. Ann Talbott Clayton Butler was also elected an MMI Trustee. His son, William Jr., was an MMI graduate of the class of 1968 and the University of Kentucky. His daughter, Ann Butler Irwin graduated from the University of Kentucky. It is with great affection for Billy Butler and recognition of his life long association and dedication to Millersburg and MMI that the Staff and Faculty and Corps of Cadets dedicate this 1980 Sniper in his honor and memory. 5 Millersburg Military Institute MILLERSBURG. KENTUCKY 40348 To our Graduates, Students, and Patrons: It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees, to offer sincerest congratulations and best wishes to the Graduating Class of 1980. This class distinguished itself by providing the leadership necessary for a re invigorated MMI. I know they will continue to demonstrate their many abilities in all their future endeavors. I wish them well. The school year 1979-1980 was a turning point in recent MMI history. We were more selective in enrolling only those students who we felt would benefit most from what MMI has to offer. Academics were geared to offering the basics and fundamentals with each faculty member challenging each student to perform to his highest abilities. The military department and military discipline were strengthened. Our athletic program and the quality of school life were excellent. The Class of '80 was instrumental in making it all work. In these days of mediocrity in most things, MMI will continue to pro- vide the best educational programs for those students who desire to participate in the unique programs we offer. Class of '80, we will miss you. Students and patrons, we thank you for your continuing support. Rest assured that your school will con- tinue to produce citizens who can and will contribute much to our life. William R. Stamler Cha i rman Board of Trustees ADMINISTRATION COLONEL ALVAN C.
