MILLERSBURG MILITARY INSTITUTE PRESENTS THE 1978 -79 SNIPER TABLE OF CONTENTS Ded ication Theme Administ rat ion Seniors Fa cu Ity Staff Underc lassmen Organizat ions Sport s Activities “The Way We Were Pot - Pourri Ad vert ise ment s 2 DEDI CATION The 1979 Sniper is dedicated to one of MMI's most distinguished sons of the Class of 1934, a trustee, graduation speaker on two occasions, generous benefactor and inspirational friend of the school throughout his lifetime - the late Arthur Wayne Plummer of West Point, Virginia. Mr. Plummer was instrumental in bringing the first female cadets to MMI in January 1977 culminating in the first female graduate and class valedictorian in this year's graduating class of 1979 - Juanita Margaret Tanner. Following graduation from MMI Mr. PIummer was the Cadet Colonel of the UK ROTC Regiment, served from 1941 to 1946 on Active Duty during World War II, and for over 20 years in the US Army Chemical Corps Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, USAR. He held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as Technical Director of the Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia located in West Point, Virginia. Mr. Plummer, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. A. B. Plummer and brother of Mrs. Karl Lusk of Millersburg was born and raised in Millersburg. Mrs. Arthur Wayne Plummer of West Point, Virginia, is currently filling Mr. Plummer's term of office as a trustee of MMI. On 19 May 1979 the MMI Library was formally dedicated by the Board of Trustees and assembled Alumni as the Arthur Wayne Plummer Memorial Library in recognition of Mr. Plummer's lifelong association both with MMI and with scholarship. It is with similar affection and recognition that the Staff and Faculty and Corps of Cadets dedicate this 1979 yearbook in his honor and memory. Memories, may be beautiful and yet, Misty, water-colored memories Of the way we were... So it’s the laughter, We will remember, Whenever we remember The way we were.” Barbra Streisand 5 Millersburg Military Institute MILLERS BURG, KENTUCKY 40348 To Our Graduates, Students, and Patrons: On behalf of the faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees, I would like to offer my sincerest congratulations and best wishes to the Graduating Class of 1979. Members of this class distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, military performance, and all- around good citizenship. I know they will continue this performance in their future endeavors. We wish them well. This past 86th MMI graduation marks a turning point in our school's philosophy. In the face of public education's increased emphasis on education geared to the average student, MMI has decided to limit its size and to channel its approach toward providing the highest possible quality of instruction, centered on small classes and individualized instruction, to a relatively few students who we feel can best respond to this approach. Rather than de-emphasizing the military portion of our curriculum, the opposite approach will be taken. Athletics for every student will continue to be the keystone of extra-curricular activities. Positive motivation and di scipI i ne wi I I be strengthened. In these days of mediocrity in all things, MMI will provide the best of educational programs for those students who want to participate in the unique programs we have to offer. All of us at MMI would like to thank you for your patronage and continued support. Rest assured that your school will continue to produce citizens who can and will contribute much to our Country and our wav of life. William R. MILLERSBUR MILITARY INSTITUTE Warmth began to spread across the land, touches of green appeared, and it seemed as if everything bloomed overnight. Little did we realize of the winter that lay ahead .., but as everything else does, that long hard winter came to an end. The Military Ball and Commencement were topics of conversation and summer vacation was now a reality. Through it all we survived, and achieved yet another year of knowledge. 26 . w ii Organizations SOCCER CLUB RECREATIONAL SHOOTING RANGERS TABLE GA MES 29 GUITAR CLUB RIFLE TEAM COLLECTORS CLUB 30 STUDENT COUNCIL BATTALI ON ORGANIZATION 33 FRISBEE CLUB BAND RIFLE CLUB 34 Sports FOOTBALL 1978-79 Asst.
