MILLERSBURG MILITARY INSTITUTE PRESENTS THE 1976 - 1977 SNIPER TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION AWARDS FACULTY AND STAFF ACTIVITIES CLASSES COMMENCEMENT ORGANIZATIONS ADVERTISEMENTS DEDICATION The 1976-1917 Sniper is dedicated to Major Charles Tanner in appreciation of his twelve years at MMI as teacher, chaplain, and friend. Of his three children - Charles Winfield II, James Cullen and Margaret - James graduated from MMI and Margaret numbered amoung the first group of young lady cadets in MMI's 84 years. 'Cap' Tanner received his A. B. degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College in Winchester, his B.D. degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and did his graduate work at Georgetown University, Morehead University and the University of Kentucky. Major Tanner has been engaged in the United Methodist's Pastoral Ministry for 15 years and served in many civic activities and conference offices. He was director of youth work for the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church for three years and worked with the Boy Scouts of America for 15 years. In addition to raising black angus cattle on his farms in Harrison and Nicholas Counties he loves fishing and raising his two Collies, Spot and Trouble. 'Cap' especially likes working with young people, and those of us who have worked with him and under him appreciate all he's done for MMI and us. We wish him well in his new ministry in Millersburg and look forward to his continued interest in and friendship with MMI. 3 Millersburg Military Institute MILLERSBURG, KENTUCKY 40348 1 August 1977 Message From The President On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff and Faculty I want to congratulate the graduating seniors and eighth graders for a job well done upon the completion of MMI's 84th year. We wish our graduating seniors success as they continue their education at West Point and other schools of higher learning, begin service in the Armed Forces, or enter the business world. We hope they, as future alumni, will maintain a long and close association with MMI, their Alma Mater. Graduates and underclassmen alike can be proud of their achievements this past year. Also, the quality of the Corps of Cadets was greatly enhanced by the enrollment at mid-term of MMI's first young lady cadets, who acquitted themselves well and earned the respect and welcome acceptance by the boys. From my point of view the school year went very well, and some of the older hands maintain it was the best of many years. In either case it is a tribute to our fine Corps of Cadets who determine what type of school year we will have. Mrs. Hadley and I want to take this opportunity to thank the parents, alumni and friends of MMI for their continuing and most welcome assistance to us this past year. Without parental understanding and support we would have little chance of successfully providing the best possible living and learning environment that all of us want for our students. We have enjoyed the association and look forward to its indefinite continuation. With Best Wishes p lh 4 ADMINISTRATION COLONEL ALVAN C. HADLEY, JR. President COLONEL WILLIAM P. Kent Cable leaves three quarts of shampoo to Eric Anderson. Don Geiss leaves his lovely face and cute smile to Booze. Shawn Haag leaves his ability to escape death to Mary Howard. Wayne Heines leaves his glowing red hair to Todd Young, with a note: I'd rather be dead than red on the head. Herbie Herman leaves an unused fielder's glove and a rubber arm to Willard Harris. Tony Niehaus leaves his devotion to study to MarJ Fredrickson. Jim Osborne leaves his punctuality to Tim Franklin. Maurey Presser leaves his scarred rotgut stomach to John Smith, who is probably a step ahead of Maurey. Dave Rouzier leaves his gentle kindliness, his sweet, understanding manner, and shyness to Lorey Parker. Craig Witherspoon leaves his combat boots to anyone with a strong enough nose to pick them up. and Greg Woods leaves his mysterious ability to slip off and on campus to John Karaus, who needs it like a hole in the head. GREAT EXPECTATIONS Greg Woods wants to be a famous drummer and make a lot of money. He'll make the money all right -- inventing two kinds of shampoo: Short and Slick and Long and Slippery. Craig Witherspoon intends to be a motorcross racer. No way! He'll sip Dr. Pepper and kick tires at a Texaco station. David Rouzier sees himself as a great businessman, but we see him selling racing sheets at River Downs. Mo Presser dreams of being a bartender, but we see him bootlegging Boone's Farm in Bourbon County. Jim Osborne wants to be a great tank commander, but we can clearly imagine him issuing bras to the Women's Army Corps. Tony Niehaus plans a successful career as a business executive. Sure! Hawking watches in the Lexington Bus Station. Jay Herbie Herman dreams of being an artist, but we see him selling bagels to Palestinian terrorists. Wayne Heines insists he's going to be a business executive, but we see him as assistant foreman on a garbage truck. Shawn Haag hopes to be an officer in the U. S. Navy. He'll come close anyway - wearing a pink Roto-Rooter uniform, sailing rubber duckies in storm sewers. Don Geiss insists that he wants to pull sticks out of the Ohio River. Yeah, really. We don't understand it either, but we see him selling Adidas sneakers in a home for the elderly. Kent Cable wants to be an undertaker. No kidding. We see him as a professor of unclear physics at M. I. T. Bing Bingham is starry eyed about being a general in the U. S. Army, but we see him recruiting Wacs in the Washington YMCA. 12 JUNIOR CLASS JUNIOR CLASS ( Thomas C. Frazier D, Craig Gardner J. Meade Best and his wife came from Virginia to Kentucky to establish a school for boys. Millersburg had been an educational center since colonial times, and the Bests secured the property of the old Kentucky Wesleyan to establish the Millersburg Training School, operated in conjunction with the Methodist Church. The first graduating class was that of 1897 with one graduate. In 1898, the school became the private property of Colonel Best. Shortly thereafter the military feature was added, and the name of the school became Millersburg Military Institute. A barbecue was held by the community at which time funds were raised to purchase guns and swords for the cadets enrolled. In the spring of 1920, Col. Best resigned and the buildings and grounds were sold to the Bourbon County School Board. The citizens of the Millersburg community determined that MMI would continue, and they formed a corporation to perpetuate the school. The old Allen home, a stately colonial mansion built in 1852, was purchased. It became the nucleus of the school and still serves as the Administration Building and President's home. Col. W. R. Nelson, who had been Commandant under Col. Best, became the head of the school and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1953. During these years Moffett Hall, the athletic field and stadium, Rankin Hall, and a gymnasium were added. The field was later named Rees Field to honor Major J. Ward Rees who served as coach and teacher for forty-seven years. In 1946 a new gymnasium was erected and dedicated to the memory of the cadets who had lost their lives in World War II. Miller Hall became the school's next building, a dormitory named for Mrs. W. M. Miller, a long time member of the Board of Trustees. Col. Nelson retired in 1953, and Col. Leslie C. Blankenship became the President, serving in this capacity until 1962. Col. W. D. Haynes became the fourth head of MMI in 1962, serving as President until 1968. In September 1963 the dining hall which had been the original gymnasium, was destroyed by fire. Funds which had been raised for a swimming pool, plus a generous donation from the Gamble brothers, made possible the construction of the present dining facility. In July, 1968, Col. Joseph R. Johnson was selected to become Superintendent of MMI. He retained this post until 1975. July 1, 1975, Colonel Alvan C. Hadley, Jr. assumed the Presidency of the Millersburg Military Institute, following his retirement from the United States Army. Colonel Hadley still retains this position. Commencing with the 1975-76 academic year, the junior school was moved from the old Wesleyan College Building to Rankin Hall on the main campus. In September 1976, the Middle School (formerly called the junior school) was expanded to include the fifth grade. In January 1977, five young lady high school students were admitted as the school's first female cadets on a day student basis. For more than eighty-four years MMI has striven to fulfill the promise ...to develop the moral character and true manliness of each student. Self reliance and self responsibility will be insisted upon and a clear conception of honor, truth, and duty will be carefully taught. To cling to valuable tradition and yet move with the rapid changes in modern society is the dual purpose under which instruction must operate. Preparation for further education is the basic purpose of the institution and RIGHT TRAINING IS BETTER THAN RICHES remains the motto for Millersburg Military Institute. 96 ' 1 . «3 - - — J - . • ' V « Vi-!- - J («'% - -■'- -'- - ' '• “ 'VVi ’- ' ....... - ... -r- -y '—- ■ - • ■ «• -A— w w , . •« 7 - « • ( .o •k’' ' ■ :-. • . r.;r ‘ ’ -v X’ ’-
