And Kevin Hadley leaves his name to carry on at this school. GREAT EXPECTATIONS James Williford wants to be a professional basketball star, but we think he had better buy a bucket and a towel. Mike Niehaus wants to be a general practitioner, but we see him clipping poodles at a vet’s office. Kevin Strong wants to be a business man, but we see a future for him hawking tips at River Downs. Jeff Geiss hopes for a future in electronics. He’ll get it, all right—the electric chair. Randy Sadler wants to be a career bum. He will be. Mark Worrell wants to go to college, and we think he will—hair dressers’ school. Kevin Hadley wants to attend Artie Circle University so he will be as far as possible from MMI. We see him teaching eskimo literature right back here. Jon Julnes wants a career in literature. He will—selling newspapers in Seattle. David Geiss wants to be a forest ranger. We can see him posing for Smokey Bear ads. Jake Haber dreams of being a physical education teacher. We see him as a stretcher in a jock strap factory. Paul Leibfarth wants to be a history teacher and return to MMI. Somehow we see him carrying Smiling Eddie's tool box. Bill Hasmann wants to go into the army, and we see that too—wearing a corporal's stripes in the WACs. Mark Carter wants to be a lawyer. That's possible. He’s had enough experience with the law. 16 Eric Moeckel wants to be a chef. He will come close, peddling hotdogs at Atlanta Braves' games. Harry Haritopolous wants to be a pilot. He'll come close too—driving a get-away car. Kootchie Kenney wants to take up forestry, but we think there will be so many trees in the way he won’t be able to see the woods. Jeff Walson wants to be a stock-car racer. Sure, he'll take third place in the soap-box derby. David Moran wants to be a pitcher for the Reds. His great grand-children will be in the bleachers. Eugene Wagoner dreams of being an agriculturist. He'll come close—a narcotics agent for him. Richard Campbell plans a future as a professional tennis player. Not quite. He’ll string rackets. Mark Calkins wants to study broadcasting in college. No way! He’ll bootleg hi-fi tapes. Darryl Baker wants to play basketball in college. Meade Best and his wife came from Virginia to Kentucky to establish a school for boys. Millersburg had been an educational center since colonial times, and the Bests secured the property of the old Kentucky Wesleyan to establish the Millersburg Training School, operated in con- junction with the Methodist Church. In 1898, the school became the private property of Col. Best. Shortly thereafter the military feature was added, and the name of the school became Millersburg Military Institute. A barbecue was held by the community at which time funds were raised to purchase guns and swords for the cadets enrolled. The first graduating class was that of 1899 with one graduate. In the spring of 1920, Col. Best resigned and the buildings and grounds were sold to the Bourbon County School Board. The citizens of the Millersburg community determined that MMI would continue, and they formed a corporation to perpetuate the school. The old Allen home, a stately colonial mansion built in 1852, was purchased. It became the nucleus of the school and still serves as the Administration Building and President’s home. Col. W. R, Nelson, who had been Commandant under Col. Best, became the head of the school and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1953. During these years Moffett Hall, the athletic field and stadium, Rankin Hall, and a gymnasium were added. The field was later named Rees Field to honor Major J. Ward Rees who served as coach and teacher for forty-seven years. In 1946 a new gymnasium was erected and dedicated to the memory of the cadets who had lost their lives in World War II. Miller Hall became the school’s next building, a dormitory named for Mrs. W. M. Miller, a long time member of the Board of Trustees. Col. Nelson retired in 1953, and Col. Leslie C. Blankenship became the President, serving in this capacity until 1962. Col. W. D. Haynes became the fourth head of MMI in 1962, serving as President until 1968. In September 1963 the dining hall which had been the original gymnasium, was destroyed by fire. Funds which had been raised for a swimming pool, plus a generous donation from the Gamble brothers, made possible the construction of the present dining facility. In July, 1968, Col. Joseph R. Johnson was selected to become Superintendent of MMI. He retained this post until 1975. July 1, 1975, Colonel A Ivan C. Hadley, Jr. assumed the Presidency of the Millersburg Military Institute, following his retirement from the United States Army. Colonel Hadley still retains this position. For more than eighty years MMI has striven to fulfill the promise .....to develop the moral character and true manliness of each student. Self reliance and self responsibility will be insisted upon and a clear conception of honor, truth, and duty will be carefully taught. ” To cling to valuable tradition and yet move with the rapid changes in modern society is the dual purpose under which instruction must operate. Preparation for further education is the basic purpose of the institution and RIGHT TRAINING IS BETTER THAN RICHES remains the motto for Millersburg Military Institute. 80 Millersburg Military Institute MILLERSBURG, KENTUCKY 40348 1 August 1976 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff and Faculty I offer heartiest congratulations to our bicentennial class of 1976. In the 200th year of our nation and the 83rd year of this Institution we have graduated 21 young men to take their places among adult society and nine middle school graduates to join the high school ranks. Some of the seniors will continue their education, some will enter the armed forces, and others will enter business, farming or industry. We wish them well and look forward to their future association with MMI as honored alumni. Congratulations are also in order for the underclassmen of both the high school and the middle school. You worked hard and can be justly proud of a job well done. Everything awarded was well earned and we share in your success. For those of you who didn't win that academic award, any special recognition, honor roll or dean's list status, military rank, or athletic letter we offer them to you as a challenge in your future efforts. Mrs. Hadley and I want to thank the parents, alumni and friends of MMI for their continuing and most beneficial support to us during this past year. We have enjoyed the association and look forward to this friendly relationship from here on in.
