E It is with appreciation and gratitude that we, the Seniors, dedicate the 1963 SUSQUEHANNOCK to our Music Man, Alfred Giancola. Mister G, do you recall your arrival in Millers- burg at which time you were confronted with the task of reorganizing the loand? After a long, hard struggle, with your determ- ination and overwhelming enthusiasm, you h'ave not only succeeded in stimulating musical interest among the students and throughout the com- munity, but have also made ours a Superior band whose members are proud to belong. As an individualist you have initiated many new ideas which have brought both education and lots of fun to everyone. Thanks for standing by us and working with us. Our fondest wish is that your future may be golden. Dedication The Family Behind The Man Lynne, Scott, and Joan Giancola 5 K 1. W WW YX mfzrmsmm ! , lk! Shaffer fsolici- tori, H. Knarr, W. E. Sheely Csupervising principalb, C. Stock- dale, R. Rissinger The Millersburg Board of Education is be- stowed with the responsibility of providing the best possible education for the students of the Millerslourg-Upper Paxton Union School District. Our educational program stems from their super- vision and guidance. To you, Gentlemen, we ex- press our most sincere thanks. 8 Our ':... ii. Supervising Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1963: As you draw near to the end of your public school education, it would be wise to review and to evaluate the years that you have spent in school. The review of that period in your life is recorded to some extent in this Yearbook. Many of you will recall specific incidents with pleasure, satisfaction, and perhaps with envy and sorrow that there can be no repetition of these days. There is little doubt that most of the past twelve years have been enioyed by those of you in this class, this is of great importance, however, if there has been no benefit to you, then you have failed and we have failed. These ex- periences, therefore, must be considered as individual since each of you will react differently to any given method of instruction or to any given instructor. What has happened to you in these years of school? What benefits have come to you? Are you now able or better able to make a living or to take your place in our society? Each of you has changed, developed, grown and, I believe, benefited from public school attendance, however, the degree of that change, development, growth and benefit has differed. This is the unique feature of public education in that all are subject to the same environment but that in the end the results vary, the answer or reason is evident, you are individuals. As you leave our best wishes go with you, we hope that we have helped you and that you helped us. W. For Twelve long years we have looked forward To This evening, now, all of a sudden, iT's over. Are we happy? Are we sad? I don'T believe we realize which is The sTronger emoTion aT This Time. Formal educaiion has ended for many of us, and we shall endeavor To seek a posiTion in life while oThers will Travel To insTiTuTions of higher learning before becoming a parT of The working world. Bur no maTTer how many memories we may gaTher in The years ahead, The memory of- The happy hours we spenT in school will linger wiTh us forever. As we marched inTo The audiTorium This evening in our caps and gowns, I believe ThaT we each Took a few momenfs To review some of The events ThaT were a parT of our school days. My ThoughTs Traveled all The way back To Sepfember of i950 when I first opened The door of Mrs. HeckerT's kindergarTen. There I meT many boys and girls who had gaThered here for one purpose: To play. Oh! The Toys we had! The firsT day we became acquainTed and compared our vaccinaTions. Half of The kindergarTen aTTended morning classes, The oTher half aTTended affernoon classes. We each had our own liTTle rugs for resT period. We all had a grand Time playing sTore, eafing cookies, Taking care of The dollies in The big play house, climbing on The Jungle Gym, and building wiTh huge wooden blocks. We learned The ABC's and could counT To IO. We builT a big, black cardboard Train. This was The pride and ioy of The Spring ArT ExhibiT. On The firsT day in May we Took parT in a huge May Day CelebraTion on The high school foorball field. The Queen and her courT were very proud. To end our wonderful year in kindergarTen we presenfed The Wedding of The Flowers as parT of our graduaTion exercises. Our nexT big advenTure was firsT grade. Those who wenT To Moore STreeT had Miss Walborn or Miss Shaffer. Lenkerville firsT graders were guided by Mrs. HarTman. I remember Dick, Jane, and Sally wiTh Their persz Spof and Puff. Also, I remember Those liTTle pasfe iars. Everyday we would cuT and pasre and pasTe and cuT. AT The end of firsT grade we could read, and we could page! How well we could pasTe! In The fall of T952 we made our debuT inTo second grade. There was an epidemic of measles This year. AfTer ChrisTmas vacaTion we were TaughT The fundamenials of wriTing. Teachers in second grade included Mrs. Romberger, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Zimmerman. SepTember of T953 was somewhaT differenf for The Moore STreeT pupils. We aTTended half-day classes in The social hall of The E.U.B. Church on Cenfer STreeT while The Moore STreeT building was being remodeled. We were consTanTly Thirsfy ThaT Sepfember. This was HOT because Of l'!0'f weaTher. IT was due To The facT ThaT we could drink from Tiny paper cups insTead of founrains. The second half of The year we wenT To our remodeled class rooms. Our Teachers were Miss Shuler and Mrs. HeTrick. Mrs. AlberT and Mrs. Phillips were Teaching The sTudenTs aT Lenkerville The Times- Table. We visifed The Shrine Circus ThaT year, and whaT a good Time we had! We sTarTed fourTh grade in 1954. We had new subiecTs ThaT year. We were 'infroduced To such advanced courses as geography and hisTory. Mrs. Novinger, Mrs. Miller, and Mr. Lebo were fourTh grade Teachers. We had loTs of fun aT recess playing games such as: PeanuTs, Coffee, Mam- my Witch, Double-Dutch and Hop Scotch. The boys played marbles and baseball. The girls carried with them cigar boxes full of stickers to trade with friends! We used Easter seals, Christmas seals, and even postage stamps! Moore Street pupils enioyed their daily trip to Moretz's or Red's for penny candy and pretzel sticks. ln T955 we entered fifth grade. In Lenkerville Mrs. Teats taught half of fifth grade along with her sixth grade. The other half of Lenkerville's fifth grade was taught by Miss Shadle. Moore Street fifth graders had Mrs. Wert and Miss Kiehl. Those in Miss Kiehl's room were well acquainted with her knack of snapping her fingers. Some of us at Moore Street were chosen to be members of the School safety patrol, and, for this reason, we went to the circus again. We all learned famous poems that year. How fortunate we were to have so many parties on school time. We also enioyed being in the Halloween Parade. September of T956 found the class of '63 in the sixth grade. We were quite grown-up that year, but we still loved the stories our teachers would read to us. Mrs. Lenker and Mrs. Seal taught at Moore Street and Mrs. Teats at Lenkerville. The School Safety Patrol went on a trip to Washing- ton, D.C. We had science and health classes that year, and we attended them in the auditorium. We were looking forward to Junior High School with great anticipation. Our annual Picnic in the Park was a huge success in sixth grade because the Lenkerville kids and the Moore Street kids had their picnic on the same day. This gave us a little preview of what the class of '63 would be like once we combined. That picnic was lots of fun, we made a cloverblossom chain, watched, a baseball game, and danced? to records in the M.Y.O. building. The summer following sixth grade was an exciting one for all of us. It was the year of the big Sesqui-Centennial celebration. We had a lovely summer, and in September we took a giant step-we were seventh graders! How confusing that first day was! There were so many teachers to meet, so many books to carry, new friends to greet, and so many new things like: schedule cards, study halls, and deten- tion. And, the funny looks we kept receiving from those big seniors. However, seventh grade was fun for most of us, and our homeroom teachers had patience and understanding. You remember, they were Mr. Matchett and Mr. Leshko. We liked Mr. Leshko so well that a fan club was formed immediately as well as one for Mr. Miller, our history teacher. We all made an important purchase that first week-a gym case or gym bag! We lugged them through the halls faithfully. We sold magazines in seventh grade. At the end of the year we had the time of our lives on a bus excursion to Hershey Park and Zoo. We rode the roller coaster so often we became dizzy. After another glorious summer we returned to M.H.S. for our eighth grade homeroom assign- ments. Half of the class was in Miss Campbell's charge, the other half had Mr. Higgins. We were a little more confident this year because we knew the ropes now and could tease the seventh graders. We had the thrill of our young lives by attending our first semi-formal dance with a real orchestra-this affair was the Junior high party. At the end of the year we had to choose our courses for next year. September of T959 found us in two homerooms. Some of us were lucky enough to have Mr. Higgins again which pleased us very much. He knew our names already, and we knew him. The other half of ninth grade found themselves in Mrs. Antes' care. Our classes were now divided into four courses. We started to learn what homework was all about. Academic Students were baffled by algebra and Latin. In the spring of the year we sold Easter candy. Sophomores are we! Onward to '63! That was our cry. Tenth grade was the year that we met Mr. Merena. Half of the class was in his homeroom, the others were in Mr. Bahner's room. We had a fine program of clubs in tenth grade. We made huge profits selling Christmas candy, even though many of the samples were devoured by eager young salesmen. The fall of T961 was the beginning of our Junior year. We were now young adults. Many of us had driver's licenses, and some of the more fortunate owned their own cars. Our iunior year was a big one, and with so much to do, we needed much guidance and understanding. We received both from our fine home room teachers. Homeroom 6 was in the care of Mr. Kelchner. The other half of the class had Mrs. Gilbert and later, Mrs. Stetz when she came back with her broken leg. Most of the class was wearing class rings now, and they weren't all Millersburg rings! We had a big task ahead of us that year-presenting the seniors of '62 with a prom. Those Committee meet- ings were like the Lincoln-Douglass debates. We finally chose our theme-Utopia. The next few weeks consisted chiefly of chicken wire, paper mache, gold paint, and oh! Those millions of pieces of broken mirror! But it was worth all the sweat and toil, for we had a lovely prom. lt was an event that won't be forgotten. On September 5, l962, we reioiced at the fact that finally we would be one great big home- room. Mr. Fox had the task of keeping watch over fifty-four Seniors, and what a iob that can be! We had some exciting football games in the fall. The most memorable event of our first semes- ter was that wonderful three-day bonanza, commonly called a Senior Class Trip! Who could ever forget the fun we had running around town the night before! Our train trip was another fun type experience, especially the bargain prices in the dining car. We shall never forget the beautiful Burlington, the bus tours, house detectives, food at Scholl's, the changing of the guard. Wash- ington D.C. was the place where we really felt like one big family for a change. We were -glad to be back home, but that was an experience we can look back upon with happy thoughts. Our senior year was an expensive one, as we found out after ordering announcements, pennants, and yearbooks. It was worth every penny. Yes, Diary, l've iust reminisced a little about the past. Those were iust a few of the thoughts l had. No one could ever write about all the things school meant to them. The subject is too vast to cover. We had so many teachers and friends who helped to guide us through the many trials and tribulations of our adolescent years. We learned so much in school, and it wasn't all from books. Many of our teachers helped us learn by relating their experiences to us so that we could learn from them rather than by trial and error. l honestly think that our class had a history to be proud of, and we can beam with pride anytime that someone mentions the class of '63. Some time in the years ahead we will be cleaning out a closet or an attic, and there in a dusty corner we will see some old notebooks, a few souvenirs, and probably-this yearbook. We will turn the pages and relive once again the best days of our lives. ? ' ? 7 ? f 4 N . ? T ? I Q ue 'T T Sera S I9 9 C 5 EY3. It says: Quiet! Recording, Radio, and T.V.
