MILLERSBURG UPPER-PAXTON UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERVISI C PRI CIP L W. EDWARD SHEELY Hanover High School Franklin 81 Marshall Penn State University 1961 Susquehannock Staff: To the staff of the yearbook I extend my congratulations on the successful preparation of another edition of the Susquehan- nock. Only you who have labored the many hours needed for the completion of this task realize the great amount of time which is involved. Only you, too, now realize the value of the time you spent working on this project. It is my hope and wish that you have profited from this ex- perience and that it may benefit you in your future endeavors. The satisfaction of the completion of the assigned task is yours. Your reward is this publication and the satisfaction you derive in the viewing of your efforts. HIGH CHOOL PRI CIP L LAWRENCE L. JOHN Scott High School West Chester State College University of Delaware Seniors : In his infinite wisdom, God has given each of us a certain quantity of talents. During the past twelve years, each of you has had the oppor- tunity to make your talents grow and prosper. With graduation you have reached a crossroads in life. You may now bury your talents in the earth wherein, as with the proverb of old, you will gain nothing and enjoy very little reward, or you may invest your talents wisely and grow rich in achievement and great in renown. Your challenge now, is to determine a way of investing your talents in such a manner as to reap the greatest reward. I personally wish each of you the greatest success possible. I dnn't want to go! We begin our trek through time on a sunny day in September of 1948. Of course, we couldn't wait to begin school and there- fore, we just rushed into our room. Our foreman, Mrs. Heckert, said we had a lot to learn, and how right she was! We were informed we had to start at the bottom, and work ourselves up to higher jobs. However, they expected us even to be able to print our names! lf we wou1dn't have had those rest periods, we would probably never have been graduated. Employefs Comment-Big project completed-they all learned how to tie their shoes. 1949 Ha, ha, ha, I know how to read, and you don't. We were really proud that we could read, and of co11.rse we just loved those fascinating tales about Jane, Dick, and that mischievou.s cat, Puff. We had such a glorious time drawing precision hop-scotchs for us. Remember all the delicious candy Mrs. Hartman used to feed us. My, it was yummy. Employefs Comment-Decided to give them promotion on account of services well rendered. 1950 Wouldn't you know it? After we had all that trouble learning how to print our names now we have to learn to write our names. Putting all our knowledge we had learned in art class, Foreman Miller's gang constructed with great care that famous It seems we all had our own name for him. Our second home seems we were always being sent to the cloak room for misbehavior. Employefs Comment4What was that girl trying to do when soap powder? We don't want green blackboards yet! 1951 No, no, first you must make the hut before you can were assigned to the construction crew this year. Part of our adobe hut, while the rest helped to build the igloo. Of course, horse, Velvet, or was it Beauty? this year was the cloak room. It Oh, well. she washed the blackboards with put the roof on it. Most of us gang worked strenuously on the we mustn't forget the crew that set up the Indian tent either. Work, work, work, that's all we do. Oh, we can't say that. Didn't those lucky Lenkerville employees get to investigate the circus that one day? Employefs Comment-- Pass the popcorn, and please sit down. 1952 Quick, see who can get that note first! Don't let him get itf' This year our main hobby was passing notes. In every nook and cranny that could be found, we stuffed notes. We also had an on-the-job training course, in which we curiously investigated the remodeling of our Moore Street building. It was interesting, until the workers started to chase us away. That's right, we mustn't forget Bible School, We attended every Wednesday afternoon. Employefs Comment-Would you like to buy some flower seeds? 1953 His head is too big. No, now it's too small. What color should I paint Pocahontas? Didn't we have fun painting those historical figures on cardboard? They seemed so much alive. And, gee, I almost forgot that some of us read Robin Hood this year. However, there was a crack down on coffee breaks this year. They had to terminate at a period of three seconds, for we don't want any loafing on the job. Employefs Comment-Repeat after me, Popocatapetl. 1954- Mrs. Seal, isn't it the girls' turn to play baseball on the field? It seems we had a little trouble this year about recreation privileges. It seems that the boys didnit think the girls should play baseball for some reason or other. For being such well behaved workers, not only were we allowed to listen to Uncle Dan on the radio each week, but as a special reward we went to the park for a huge staff picnic. Oh, yes, didn't the Lenkerville crew put on a wonderful play? lt was that famous production of Christmas Around the World. ' Employefs Comment-Which of the patrol members got lost in the zoo in Washington? 1955 Gracious, where is room 28? You'd think they would have put up a sign to show you your way. We were a bit confused in the beginning with the new building and changing classes every period, but not for long. We were assigned long individual reports for the first time this year, but we passed that test with flying colors. Did you hear about that? Someone got whipped cream on the curtains during our homeroom play. Employefs Comment-And this is the art room, and over there music classes are held. 1956 Don't tell me we have to stay after work again? Who slammed his desk this time? No kidding? Must we stay because someone was talking? This year we seemed either to gaze intently at the bulletin board, or were being kept after school for being noisy. But of course we also had fun. There were many transfers this year, and our crew was greatly enriched. Didn't the girls have a good time dissecting that eyeball under the supervision of our foreman? Employefs Comment-Quiet back there, or you will write the Preamble 25 times. 1957 Come one, come all to our fabulous bake sale. Would you like to buy some fudge or how about a watermelon cake. To raise money for future use, this year we had a real gone bake sale. Besides this unforgettable event, we can't forget this was the first year of our special training in the various courses of Algebra, Latin, Exploratory Business, etc. Of course, we can't forget the initiation of the F.F.A. ' Employers, Comment-8 KX-YJ 2 15 QA -1- bb Amo, amas, amat, 1958 Move the picture slightly to the left. Now try the lighting-perfect. This was an eventful year. Foreman Gilbert's crew put on that wonderful play, lt's Cold in Them Thar Hills. Oh, and remember the assembly when a certain boy was catching mice with a paper cup. One of our evening activities included a hay ride, with a dance following it, gosh, I almost forgot that we sold Christmas candy. My, it was a busy year. Employefs Comment-Who ate all the candy samples? 1959 How do you build a plantation? The building is certainly hard to keep white. This will he about the third time we painted it. Gads! This year went fast. It seems as though we had just entered when it was over. Of course, we had a lot to do. Those of us who were interested could take a course in physics, although we always seemed to be dropping weights during our experiments. Then we just loved writing that competitive essay for English honors. When the night of the big dance came, all were excited. We knew that all that hammering, painting, and mopping of floors couldn't have gone to waste. Employers' Comment-I'm a Yogi. 1960 'gWait for me! I hope the bus doesn't leave. What will I do if I get lost in Washington? I mustn't panic. Our job will be finished this year at the Millersburg Plant. It has been a job filled with memories, which included a quick trip to Washington, the acquiring of crew pictures, and the many little experiences we had. We will never forget it. Employefs Comment-Please don't break any more chemistry equipment. Please! And so ends our trek through time and our description of previous jobs. Our next assignment-the wide, Wide world. At Oxford University, they are commencing the initiation of Professor JAMES MANNING to the Loyal Order of the Faculty. I smell the smoke of some far away place. It's a small cafe in Paris, France. In a very poorly lighted corner with the smoke of burning cigarettes, cigars, and foods twining around her nostrils, sits that brilliant young history teacher, Mademoiselle DONNA WILT. Now there are noises like those of an airport. The receptionist at the TWA desk will look familiar to you. She is JUDY HOKE. You are back in New York City again. You're in a young attorney's office, that of LARRY BOLTON. The secretary is JOY MURRAY. They have some general office help there. I believe you know one of the young ladies. They are PENNY HOTTENSTEIN and BETSY CUMMINGS. They have a medical secretary, .IACQUIE MATTIS. There is a civil service worker in the Pentagon in whom you would be interested. I believe her name is PATTI SCHORR. She's some Big-Wig's secretary. Mr. Scalpi, you'll be interested to know how well one of your boys made out. His name is DENNIS LENKER, and he is the bookkeeper for the United States Secretary of the Treasury. A young man you know as a football star took up drafting at a trade school and is now a famous architect. You know him as DONALD ALBERT. He has two fine constructional engineers working for him. They are MIKE DANIELS and HAROLD SCHRADER. Their secretary-bookkeeper is Miss DHARLA WERT. '4You are going to Chicago, to a school where many of your friends work. Also in this office JANE PATTON takes care of all the important work that has to be done. You are on your way home now. Your next stop is the Thompson Business College in Harrisburg. There, working until all hours of the night, is that very studious business student, Miss DIANE TROUTMAN. In this great city of Harrisburg, the Metrapolitan Insurance Company has employed three of your friends. They are DOROTHY CASNER, LEOLA KOHR, and DONNA LEITZEL. On to your home town of Millersburg where three of your students live. In Lenkerville lives Miss MARGARET OXENRIDER. She works at Regal Shirt Factory, where she has a very important job-Scorching Shirt Collars. On a small farm on the outskirts of Millersburg lives CLINTON ESHLEMAN. He is a truck farmer. He's been planting all types of trucks in his garden waiting to see what kind of truck will grow, but as yet he hasn't had much luck. And last of all I see the former CARLENE BONAWITZ. She is the mother of eight children, and is still looking forward to her set of twin girls. '4My crystal is fading out, so I believe I have told you what you wanted to know about all your students.
