The Junior Class made a flying start this year by topping all previous classes in magazine sales. We sold 215825 worth with the help ofseveral members topping over 3100. Lamar Sharp was our high sales- man with a total of 3154, for which he won a trophy. By selling over S700 worth of magazines, we re- ceived a man's Benrus wrist watch which we auctioned at our Ligonier basketball game for 340. Mr. Stevens, our band instructor, is the proud owner of the watch. Our next attempt at earning money was selling ice cream during the noon hour. Then came our class parties which we really enjoyed. For Christmas we exchanged names among our class of ten boys and nine girls. Quite a few of our class members belong to various activities in school. Second team members are Bob Hull, Merle Yoder, Garry Gardner, and Jay Yoder. Three boys are on the varsity squad--Marvin Reigsecker, Larry Stump, and Wilbur Fisher. Sunshine girls include Nancy Virgil, Marie Lockwood, Judy Fetsch, Sandra Sark, Bonnie Weaver, Norma Hire and Zo Ann Sheline. Judy Fetsch and Bob Owen are president and vice-president of the Student Council. Our representatives to the Student Council are Marilyn Hostetler and Merle Yoder. Spring played a big part in our eventful year. We presented our class play in March with Mrs. Whiteman as our director. It was a lot of hard work but we enjoyed it. Then came the real big event-- the Junior-Senior Reception. Of course we provided all the fixings, etc. This ended our Junior year filled with joy, happiness and hard work. SODHONIORES 1 x . , Q W. For the past nine months the Sophomore Class of Millersburg High School has been working hard to earn money for their upper-class expenses. The class sold Christmas cards and gelatin desserts. The card sales amounted to 5824. The class was divided into two teams with Paula Rippey and Victor Vir- gil acting as captains. Pau1a's team sold the most cards, so Victor's team gave a party for themin Decem- ber The Sophomores were active in many organizations in school. Two boys played on the varsity basketball team, and three on the second team. Many of the girls were in Sunshine and the Pep Club. Several boys were in F.F.A.. Chair and Canvas Crew, and baseball. Our Student Council is the student governing body of the school. We try to encourage student re- sponsibility for the respect of property, development of good school attitudes. We attempt to teach students how to take part in democratic life. Any problems that students may have during the year are brought before us by their representatives. We then try to settle these problems to the best of our ability. We do not attempt to set school policy. This year the Student Council sponsored a chapel exercise each month, They consisted of talks given by one of our local ministers with assistance given by the music department, We also sponsored three assembly programs, all of which were held during the last semester. Onlanuary 25, Bob Wood entertained us with his extraordinary cartoonist ability. On March 3 the Schmidtzs gave a display of their amazing dexterity in physical education. Our last program of the year was on April 15. Mysterious Brown proved to us that the hand is quicker than the eye with his magician act. The Student Council operates the checkroom, which is our only source of income. The money re- ceived from the checkroom is used to defray the cost of assembly programs. We also furnish the school Christmas tree. Our motto is Others and the purpose of our club is helpfulness and kindness to others in our school and community. We have meetings twice a month. One is a business meeting, while the other is a program in charge of various committees. This year we have done our work through committees, such as cheer, finance, activities, program, etc. On September 30 we had our formal initiation in the Reformed Church. Fourteen girls were initiated at that time. The officers, who were in charge of the ceremony, wore white robes and gave a very im- pressive candlelight service. Mrs. Mc Colley was our speaker. We invited our mothers and teachers as guests. Refreshments were served in the church parlors after the initiation. On September 25 our president and sponsor attended the annual state Sponsors-Presidents luncheon at Indianapolis. On October 2 several of our girls attended the district convention at South Whitley. The state convention was held April 9 at Lafayette. More than two thousand girls from all over the state attended. To make money this year we had three bake sales and made cakes for each home basketball game. The club purchased Sunshine sweaters for the following senior members: Barbara Hapner, Kay Green, Nancy Kuhn, Mary Ellen Miller, Irene Plank, Mary Petgen, and Ruth Swihart. At Christmas each member did something special for someone. We also gave a Christmas cheer basket to a family. Other club activities were donating to the state Riley Fund, collecting funds for the polio drive and Red Cross, sending get-well cards to people in our community, and other community services. BASKETBALL The '54-'55 Millersburg basketball season got under way with a defeat taken at Shipshewana, but the Millers came back in later games to better the record set last year. The first Millersburg win was their next game, which was with Jefferson, the team which proved to be the undoing of Millersburg in the county tourney and also went ahead to win the tournament. After losing a ragged affair to New Paris, Millersburg posted another victory in a close overtime game with Ligonier which Orville Yoder pulled out of a tie in the closing seconds by sinking two free throws. A win over Leesburg and a defeat by a hot-shooting Jimtown team gave Millersburg a 3-3 record. A game with Syracuse was pulled out of the fire twice as Millersburg came from behind to tie the game into an overtime on a set shot by Marvin Reigsecker and then to win by one point when Jerry Schrock sank a long set shot with three seconds to go. The next game was a defeat by up-and-corning Jefferson, who were on a winning streak and came back to win from a ten-point deficit in the last quarter. A reverse of the Jefferson game was played by us on Friday, as we came from behind to beat New Paris and take possession of the Bill Smoker traveling trophy. The possession was short-lived, however, as Concord took it away the following Tuesday. Another win, which made Millersburg's record 7-5 as they entered the county tourney, was a defeat of Middlebury, a rival which always seemed to get by Millersburg in recent years. The Millers second team had compiled a good record with only three losses when they entered the second team tourney at New Paris. They defeated Bristol easily in the first game and then Concord in some fine ballplaying to put them up for the finals of the tourney to be played as a preliminary to the first team championship game at Nappanee. ln the county tourney Millersburg lost a heartbreaker as Jefferson pulled out of a tie with five seconds to be by making good two free throws. The Millers' second team brought some consolation to Millersburg on Saturday night by coming from behind in the last quarter of the second-team championship game to beat Wakarusa. It was quite an accomplishment, sinoe it was the first time that Millersburg had won a permanent trophy in basketball. The following week the Millers received a little further consolation by defeating favored Jimtown and again taking home the Smoker traveling trophy, which Jimtown had taken from Jefferson in their first post-tourney game, The trophy was lost again a week later to Wakarusa. The '54-'55 Millers ended their season above the fifty percent mark. They gained recognition as one of the better than average teams of the county. Four senior boys, Calvin Rockenbaugh, Jerry Schrock, Clarence Yoder, and Mervin Troyer, played their last regular season game on Friday, Frebruary 18 and helped complete a successful season. The Millers made a fine showing at the sectional tourney, having reached the semi-finals before they lost to Wakarusa 61 to 59. We won our first game, 68 to 67, from the highly-favored Concord Minutemen. Then next we defeated a much- improved New Paris team, 46 to 41. Mervin Troyer's accuracy at the basket iced this game for us. Three of our men-- Cal, Jerry, and Max--were chosen on the all-sectional second team. Wilbur and Orville were given honorable mention. Max was third high-point man of the tourney and was chosen on Herb Swartz's five-man tourney team. The Millers closed the season with 13 victories and 9 losses, which rated them second in the county, topped only by Nappanee who won the sectional. f' as-st A f JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: Blair, Suter, Yoder, Larimer, Hostetler. They came through with seven wins and three losses. The county race for the championship was very close as Concord, Millersburg, and Jimtown were tied for first place at the end of the regular season. In the top four playoffs, Millersburg was slated to play Concord, Middlebury, and Jimtown. The Millers were defeated by Concord, one of their victims in season play, by a score of 4 to 0. However, Millersburg came in second in the county by defeating Mid- dlebury again and taking a forfeit from Jimtown. Four seniors--Schrock, Rockenbaugh, Troyer, and Yoder--will be missing from next year's base- ball squad. TRACK TEAM FRONT ROW: Mgr. In the spring of 1954 the twelve hard-working boys of the track team came through a very successful Season with the loss of only one track meet out of three. They also set some new school records: among them was Jan Musselman throwing the shotput 48 feet 112 inches. Later on in the county tournament he broke his own record 43 feet 6 114 inches. Holding the previous record was Carlysle Chiddister, who threw the shotput 42 feet 11 112 inches in 1952. Another one breaking a school record was Calvin Rockenbaugh who ran the mile in 5 minutes 6 seconds, breaking Harold Showalter's previous record of 5 minutes 13 seconds set in 1949.
