SPEQKS Pictures, articles, cartoons, acts, and an un- told amount of work and time. Put them all togeth- er and what have you---an Annual, Those people who do not help directly with the book may perhaps wonder why all the effort to publish such a book. These same people had they had the opportunity to work on such a project surely would be its strong- est boosters. The Millerette Annual represents the combined efforts of the entire student body and faculty, The majority of the work is done by the staff under the very capable leadership of the staff advisor, but indirectly each student should be able to re- gard it as a part of his contribution to the com- munity. The history of high school annuals is long and interesting, far too long to be related here. The annual has passed through an evolutionary stage of being produced by the faculty to the present day book published by the students. With the exception of the cover and pictures, the work in the Miller- ette is done entirely by high school students. It is true that long hours must be spent upon it. Many schools publish an Annual with the immed- iate objective of earning money, and experience comes incidentally. The Millerette is published with the idea of giving something constructive to the community which makes such a project possible, Pupil participation sets the stage for the best learning conditions and I am sure that each member of the staff can point with pride to the Millerette and say, HI helped to publish that book,H Profit is a secondary factor in publishing the Millerette, If it were not for the cooperation and support of the advertisers the project would be too great tn undertake. Perhaps further improvement of the book as you read through it represents the honest ef- forts of the staff to produce something which will stand as a monument of their educational achieve- ments, --Mrs S :?55:f:5q::-::.. -. - 'wa .f -f . URQTURIEHL HUD REQUHWE CONTEST Early in life I enjoyed Public Speaking and hearing one express oneself well in private conversation. and, having a desire to do something of lasting benefit for the students of Millersburg Public Schools, I thought of this contest. I Since most of my early school days, from about 1875, were at this school, and later m good wife having been one of the faculty, and thereafter I being privileged to be one of the school's officials, for nine consecutive years, and my two and only children having their school days here, and after the going to the greater life of my only son, Ralph W. Immel, in l927, I, with my good wife, now deceased, thought to sponsor the contest in his memory. Another reason was that the Hon. John F. Shafroth Ca good friend, now deceasedl, who had been Governor of Colorado, also United States Senator from Denver, had founded a contest for the City Schools of Denver with splendid re- sults. This continues to be sponsored by his family. Contests of this kind are also of much value to the community as a whole, as well as to the school. It is good for the school to per- petuate traditions from year to year the ideals of those who today are leaders in community life. The contest also offers opportunity for self expression. Americans need to cultivate these activities as a means of preserving Democracy. Schools have a great influence in pre- serving the America of Washington and Lincoln. The one way to prevent ruin of citizenship is for each one to participate in the honest ad- ministration of Government. C.M.Imml Denver, Colorado S ORATORICAL CONTEST l READING CONTEST l. The boys improved steadily, drawing larger crowds and winning twice as many games during the second half of the season as they did in the first half. At the end of the season the Millers went to the sectional tourney at Nappanee where they met the Middies of Middlebury. Since they were outmatched by this team earlier in the season, they felt that they would have stiff opposition. Although they were defeated, they played a fine game and gave the Middies a Hfight to the finishsu Two heartbreaking, overtime games were played during the season. The first overtime occurred when the Millers met Cromwell, losing the game, 33-31. The second overtime was the last game of the season. This game the boys lost to Wawaka, LO-38. The second team also showed their ability as ball players. They won six hotly contested games and lost six more by not more than five points. Everyone is confident that these boys will make good material for the games next year. The Senior Class was well represented in the games. Six boys played ball, while another served as student manager. The following boys received sweaters: Richard Hoffman, Allen Conrad, Allen Fisher, Dale Fisher, Jake Hartsough, Sheldon McClain, and Robert Long, Acting as tip off man, we found Dale Fisher with his vim and vigor, fighting to the finish. Dale served.for two years on the first team squad. In the fall of l936, the village of Honeyville sent to Lillersburg High a very capable ball handler. The gentleman was none other than Jake Hartsough. Jake's ability in the athletic field made him a member of the varsity squad for three years. Allen Fisher, better known as HPerryH, ran into a streak of hard luck last fall, injuring his wrist. This kept him from joining the second semester. Allen Conrad, coming from North Clinton, added strength to the team with his height and spirit of cooperation. We always fuund HCooneyH striving to do his best. Sheldon McClain, the curly haired member of the squad, hurriedly took the floor to do his part. HMacH is known well to fans for his arch shot from the center of the floor. Richard Hoffman well held the title of the smallest player of the team. However, Rich was one of the most efficient members, with his well noted skill in dribbling and set up shots. He long will be remembered for his display of good sportsmanship. Robert Long, the young man who carried the suitcases, faithfully served as student manager for the past three years. His spirit of enthusiasm throughout the game was an added inspiration to the team. - .. . .... ...,. .v...... m 1 yu un nun n 1-nu 1 un lf- I ffx5 I X 1 ' 6'-2-'f X q-41.4 - A NN 2 PT f L: i. 1 Z- X ,Z Mvs'Pp'41f.fi:5v'fi-4.ii- ' 'V .f.-.nr .-tg f Q-1: 1.1-L '3 F55 af' 1 , ,z-1:-'gil-uf.. - f -. - 1, .- .. r., -:,.,5f:1-4-i:.,.sf.-. ,Vu f. fy-::'.-W :vig Q.-71 p-jf'i: lf: r, I. ,- -' .2-.i -2 J ,. 4 r: :-55,34 ,, .-wmiljg' :q.:.' ,,-'-2:12 'ax' .-1 ..-' Z' fy 1 'YQf151'7'ff- ' 1 ' f : - .f fr-.1-Q -.wk ' mv,:,z,., ,.-,gf -. , hy 5' .- 'gi fgq ' ' ' ir,-f.-.:'f, ' ,mia 'T'1rn J .1 Q PM--LF! 1 Sal 5112-'RF 1:3342 . eg ., , - --4+-1 f. 1-551'-nf R .1 Q Z.: ' 1? SUCCESS . HSuccess can only be reached by climbing a very steep hill. Climb little by little, but never turn back or stand still.n ---Braham More than anything else, you are interested in the future. You want to know whether you will reach the pinnacle labeled success. But what is success? Noah Webster says Hsuccess is the degree of attain- ing one's desired ends, the attainment of wealth, position, fame, or favor.H Robert Gunning says Hsuccess consists of neatly fitting the particular set of abilities that are yours into the set of require- ments for a particular job.H When do you gain success? Have you attained the goal you set? Is success recognized by you in this life? A pastor once said that a man never knows the extent of his success. Those who send flowers and lay him away after the soul has fled know how successful a person has been You may have set your goal beyond that of a neighbor, then is he successful when he attains his goal? Isn't it as successful to be a number one farmer as to have a high paying salary from a professional job, such as that of a doctor or postmaster? If it weren't for the farmer how would the professional man live? Millersburg High certainly will have some successful people for out of the L25 graduates since l9l5, taking a general count, 72 are engaged in professional work, l5Z are in some way or other connected with the commercial trade, perhaps owning a business, or acting as a salesman or a stenographer. Ah! Here is where we shine. Thirteen Alumni of our school are now engaged in the teaching profession, eleven in Elkhart County schools. Four of these eleven are in Millersburg High School and two at Clinton Community School. About ll76 of our graduates didn't wish to remain on the farm and sought work elsewhere such as in a factory, truck driving, etc. Of the L25 graduating students 225 were of the fairer sexy about 501 of these are housewives and SZ are doing house work, the remainder are engaged in some other field of service. There are 201 of the fellows farmers, 202 of our students are yet in college, and death has taken thirteen. What is the plan, which path is to be chosen by the thirty inno- cent pieces of Godfs handiwork, awakening to LIFE this year? Will their desire be fulfilled, will they attain success or will their journey be incomplete as some have been? What ever their lot may be we, the Alumni, wish them, as they join us, all the health and happi- ness that is theirs. For life is uncertain at bestg Success is for those who would work. There is never a place in the halls For those who would duty shirk. Our fore-fathers died to gain This land of the brave and the free, And we will have lived in vain If some better we can't make it be. In this glance, I see the members of this years Senior class, rushing through school life mid studies, class activities and social life. Through all this there has been someone watching and showing us where we rise or fall in our every day contacts together. But now as we step from the threshold of this door on to the next we must go alone. Each boy and each girl is starting for whatever path of life he is best fitted. Whether we make a failure or success, whether the path is easy or hard, from here on we are testing what we have accomplished and gained during our last four years. One thing is certain if we follow our motto HThe door to Success is labeled 'Push'Q we shall never slip backward in our life's journey no matter what our task shall be. So classmates it is up to each one of us to make the kind of mark that we so desire in life. And now as we are closing the success door through which we have just passed here at Millersburg High School, and take with us what has been our privilege to gain in these four years, may I say for myself and in behalf of my fellow classmates, that we sincerely hope that Millersburg High School has gained as much from.our attendance here as we have from being members of the school. And now as we stand on this threshold let us take this as our motto: NMay we ever play fair in lifes game Only ever bring honor to your name As we walk in lifes pathway Pressing onward day by day May we show to you M. H. S. only Fame.H SHLUTHTURH Parents and Friends: We, the Senior Class of IQLO, wish to give you a hearty welcome to our class night exercises. For four years we have studied together, worked together and enjoyed many good times. We ap- preciate the fine help the faculty has given us. we have reached the goal of all High School students--Commencement. After this our desire shall be to reach a higher goal, and adhere to our motto, UThe door to Success is labeled 'Push'.H Behind this door lies an open field of opportunities, as we enter into this field, we must HPushH to become a success in life. A successful person usually is contented by knowing he will do best to help the community and in the knowledge that he will be of service to his community, To succeed we must have truth, a purpose, dependa- bility, faith, and to know our work and do it. The class will be sorry to say good-by to Millersburg High School, but we shall be glad to start out in another phase of life. Before going farther we have gathered here to-night to review our progress of the past four years. --Phyllis Leek Agnes Stutzman ... ., .,............ .. .................... .........,............. ...............................................--..... ..............-..,....-....,..........,... ELQSS HISTURH It seems only yesterday that we, the Seniors of today, entered the doors of education here at M. H. S. as green freshies. We had a class enrollment of 32. This was to us a new life, but we decided to plunge into this work with able leaders so we elected as officers: Ruth Yoder ---------- President Floyd Utley ---- Vice President Lucille Long ------- Sec. Treas Phyllis Botts -------- Reporter Miss Honderich -------- Sponsor With these persons as our leaders, we stepped into the social life of high school. We held two parties this year, the first at the home of Eileen Bradley in honor of Hallowefen and the second a sliding party at Bohn's Pond. we also had six boys of athletic build who held positions on the second team. ' After an exciting summer, we shed our coat of green and assembled at M. H. S.as Soph's. Having taken the' roll of the previous yean we found some had dropped from our ranks, but others had stepped in, making our total 30. This year we found another able leading body with: Shirley Long ---------------- President Paul Ditchett ---------- Vice President Lucille Long---Sec. Treas.d Zeporter Miss Cripe ---------------- -+--Sponsor Being more accustomed to high school life, this year we held three parties. We were entertained at the homes of Paul Ditchett and Walter Sark, and the final party was held in the old gym. . When we again entered M- H. S. as Juniors, we decided to take school life even more seriously, so we elected the following officers: Lucille Long -------- President Dale Fisher ---- Vice President Ruth Yoder ------- -Sec. Treas. Margaret Baker ----- -Reporter Mr. Luke -------------- Sponsor we lost two students and gained another, making this years enroll- ment 29. Our greatest aim was to raise money. Therefore we only had time for one party this year which was held at Miller's Hill. HWhat Happened to Unclen was the title of our play which we pre- sented on the night of February lO. Next came our Junior-Senior re- ception. Our class had the honor of being the first to use the new EWU for this Occasion- We carried out the theme of Snow 'flhite and the Seven Dwarfs, and the room was beautifully decorated in this manner. .. Being badly in need of a shampoo, I journeyed to the beauty shoppe and went through the fifty cent ordeal. After a few minutes under the hair dryer I became very drowsy. Soon I had a vision of my high school pal, Lucille and I wonder- ing down the sidewalks of Chicago. As we approached Marshall Fields Department Store,we noticed several new dress styles in the window. After further investigation we discovered they had been designed by Phyllis Betts, who is now famous in the Fashion Centers of the world We soon realized that we had to hurry if we were to get out to Wrigley Field in time for the double header between the Cubs and Giants. So we boarded a trolley and went to the north side J of the windy city. After we had gone several blocks, Phyllis Darr stepped into the car. She told us she was working as a seamstress for Miss Betts. During our conversation,Phil handed us a Chicago Tribune and called our attention to a column on world affairs entitled Hwhat will happen next?H edited by Phyllis Leek. he also noticed that Floyd Utley was chief press operator of this well noted paper. Within a few minutes, we heard loud cheering and we found our- selves at the ball park. we were very fortunate in 'securing seats in the press box with our old schoolmate, Allen Conrad, who was now a radio announcer. Cooney had previously taken the noble Bob Elson's position in the Sports World. As the game got under way, we noticed a familiar figure on the playing field. It was none other than Richard Hoffman playing short- stop for the Cubs. He had just signed a contract, much to the disap- pointment of Mr. Davis. Cooney told us that Mr. Davis had been in Chicago the week previous and encouraged Rich to accept the offer of the New York Yankees. However, Rich was the wiser and we were sure he would profit by it. Returning from the ball park, we stopped at a Beauty Shop. To our amazement, we found that Margaret Baker was the proprietor with Norma Kurtz acting as her assistant. The girls consented to spend the evening with us in Grant Park attanding the concert in the band shell. Phil Spitalny and his all girl orchestra vere the guest players. The opening selection sounded quite natural, but whyshouldn't it with Shirley Long playing Josephine on her saxophone. Soon a soloist with a pleasing soprano voice appeared. It was none other than Ruth Miller. After the concert, we talked to the girls. Ruth 'said that her sister, Mary, was to be in New York the following week to speak at the annual delegation of the Federated Womens Club. Feeling quite tired, we returned to our respective hotels. As Lucille and I reached our room Kenny Vance who was acting as bell hop brought us a letter from Ruth Pletcher. She had recently taken over a ,,fHHHMWHH5g2 THE HHEEEHEEEE 1 PUBLISHED BH THE SEHIUH EEHSS UE EHiLEEHSBHHl3 HIGH SEHUUE HHEEEHSBUHE, IHUIHHH IHHH EHEUETH HDVISEH EEHSS SPUHSUH EHISS EHIPE HIHUHVIS ......,-...... ...-..-.-N... ..-,.......-mx.......,......-....,....,.......,... .. ...., ... ...,....... ,..... ... .,. . ...,.,..-....-......... .., ...... .,..., ... .. .v,. ..,,.....,.. ..,.. .....,. i - - - - - - - - - -----pp----..-.--...---..-..----....-.. ----.--...--Nu-.-f---Q-,--1-.-..-kg-...--....---.----..-..-- position as stenographer in her home town. Agnes was doing housework rear by. Ruth also said that Imogene had completed her course in nurses'training and was stewardess on an airplane that was being piloted by Bob Long. Early the next morning we were awakened by a great commotion be- neath the hotel window. After investigating we found it to be 'the milk man, Walter Sark. Still being tired from the previous day, we had our breakfast in bed. As the maid entered the room, we immediately recognized her as Evelyn Coyle. She had also brought us the morning paper. As custeuh ary we looked at the funny section first. we were much amazed to find a comedy strip HOscar, the Pign edited by Allen Fisher. Turning to the front page, we saw the headlines NCowboy Respons- ible for Capture of Bandit.H we found that Dale Fisher was the cow- boy hero. He was under the employment of Paul Ditchett who owned a great ranch in Wyoming. After a strcnous day of shopping in the loop we attended the Barn Dance at the Eighth Street Theatre. To our surprise we saw Virginia Berkey playing her french horn in the brass ensemble. As we were leaving the theatre, we met Chuck Prough in the lobby. For the last two months he was acting as a salesman for Henry Ford in the vicinity of Detroit. He was spending the weekend in Chicago with a friend. He told us that Fred Hartsough was serving in Elkhart County as a scientific farmer after completing an agriculture course at Purdue University. Junior Whirledge was also carrying on as a farmer. Calvin Whirledge had quietly settled down in the little town of Middlebury as a barber. The next day being Sunday, we felt it nur duty to attend church services. There were numerous rumors of a new church just a block away. Nhat a combination we found there! The Reverend Sheldon Mc- Clain who operated a garage during the week was the pastor. 'His ser- mon on HA Mechanic's Duty to His Churchn was very impressive. After a few minutes Ti conversation with Mac, we immediately went to the bus station and boarded a Greyhound bus for home. Thsl driver was Jake Hartsough and as we felt assured of reaching home safely we were enjoying the trip immensely. Suddenly there was a stop. The roar of the motor ceased. Soon I realized someone was speaking to me. Yes! It was a beauty operator, She had brought an end to my dream. p Iphu 4.,y,,. IUUSIE UEPQRTVHEUT Instruction on the instruments of the band and the orchestra is available to every student in Millersburg High School. The school has a drum, two cornets and two Mellophones which can be rented by student pupils at the low rate of Ql.5O per school year. During the school year l939-AO, Millersburg High School had an orchestra of sixteen pieces. Nineteen students were enrolled in ei- ther the Elkhart County Concert Band or the County Reserve Band. The Concert Band numbers SO pieces while the Reserve Band has a personnel of 90 players with a waiting list of 35. Band members, in addition to playing in the Elkhart County Fair Concerts, play in numerous town programs during August and September. During the winter the Concert and Reserve Bands are kept busy playing their regular scheduled performances and for the Elkhart County Teach- ers Federation, the Institutes and Association meetings. Although the Millersburg enrollment in instrumental music is the smallest in the County, the school is well represented in the County Concert and Reserve Bands. IOOZ of those taking band are enrolled in one or the other of these organizations. Individual students have brought distinction on their school and themselves. Last year Virginia Berkey, with only a few months' exper- ience with the French Horn, one of the most difficult of the brass- wind, won her way through'the District and State Contests to the Na- tional. Millersburg was represented in the Flag Swinging Corps, which was organized this year for the County schools, with a large blaeksilk flag with large gold letters, M.H.S., in the center. These flag swingers will be available to appear between halves at the basketball games next year, and, if there is sufficient interest, Hillersburg can have a flag swinging unit all her own. So on the inside of our door to success, we leave this bit of advice. First, in behalf of my fellow pushers, I feel that some advice to the faculty body in general would be quite fitting. As to the giving of another teacher's play, I advise you to pick a play in which the characters are more mannerly so you don't display to the public the way you actually act at home. A Next, I advise you not to pay so much attention to these Hpuppy affairsn that are carried on by students each year. I also advise some of you beautiful lady teachers to get vaccinated for this disease. It seems to come at the most unexpected times and it might catch a couple of you, too. Miss Zook, we advise you to get a memorandum book much on the order of Mr. Davis'. You can write down all you hear about the stud- ents in public speaking class. ' Mr. Bevington, if you are going to try to pass your girl friend, Bertha Mae, off as your sister, we advise you to get one that looks more like you. we advise Miss Cripe to take a course in Safety: then your car will not be in the garage and you will not have to drive another. we advise Mr. Luke to drop the sponsorship of his present class. It is a disgrace to you after the class you had last year. we advise Miss Gangwer to grab that fellow from Chicago before it is too late. Remember, Miss Gangwer, opportunity knocks only once. we advise 'Miss McDowell to cut out some of her duties. Worry makes gray hair, and we would like to keep you the best looking teach- er in M. H. S. It seems. Miss Honderich does not set a good example. The ideal Home EC. girl usually takes cooking and sewing in High School and soon after graduation settles down to make some little man happy. we advise Miss Honderich to complete her teaching duty this year and settle down in some home. I think it would be wise for Mr. Juday to take that much talked of hunting trip into Canada. Maybe you could find something up there that could stand your Physics tests. Theyfre certainly hard on the students. we advise Mr. Davis to keep a 'record in his memorandum book of the days he drives his car to school, so he won't have to walk home. Did you ever hear of a class picking on'a calm, gentle, and peaceable person for the class grumbler? Well, that's just what the Senior Class did this year, so since I've been elected here goes: People always think that when a person becomes a Senior he should have superior knowledge in every subject. Well, at least that's what' Mr. Juday thought about his Physics class, Mr. Juday please remember, we had to be 'Af plus students in other subjects too, besides Physics. Anyway what is the use of taking Physics? Everyone usually gets a check on their paper. Why can't the students have a postoffice in the principafs office as the teachers do? l'm sure we could make good use of itg so,Mr. Davis, to show the under classmen that your heart is on the right side fthe Seniors know itb, just build a postoffice for them, and see if it isn't very helpful and useful. Talking about modernistic school houses! You never saw a more modernistic one than our dear old Millersburg High, because we have hot water to drink and cold water to wash ing very modernistic, I must say! ' When we Seniors get settled down to try to enjoy a nice, quiet, study period, who starts to tramp in but those little green Freshiesg they then decide to go to the library and the floor begins to squeakg so goes another day in M.H.S. It sure gives me the creeps to see anyone so quiet and gentle as Dale Schrock. One day when Mr. Bevington was supposed to be studying his lesson I noticed that he was writing very diligently, not his lesson, but a letter to North Manchester to see how many credits he made in the last four years! AHEM1 A Actually, High School was so dead that the Juniors couldn't even argue with the Seniors, so we had to argue with ourselves. Another thing, students, isn't life easy for the faculty? They even have a faculty room to rest in while the hard working classmen have to rest on the hard seats in the assembly and possibly have their name written on a piece of paper by the teacher and soon the little slip of paper goes traveling to the principal's office and then----- well, you can guess the rest. ' Lou, why donft you go around after each teacher and erase the blackboards? You wouldn't ask the faculty to do that, would you? If you don't, Lou, we students have to look at what they wrote on the board for weeks. Why do we have to give our life history and almost show our birth certificate in order to go into another room on business matters? The teacher practically takes a snapshot of you to see if you've changed since they issued you the permit,Calthough it has only been about five minutesD3 also if you are a minute late to school you have to sit in the office that'whole period. We must admit, Mr. Davis, you have a very nice office, the prettiest scenery! ffour cream colored wallsj. I walked in the library to get a magazine, glanced down at the date which showed this: December, l937. ' When they were building a new addition to the High School, why didn't they make sound-proof rooms? In room two it sounds like a cloudburst when anyone walks around in the fifth and sixth grade room. Seniors, did you realize we were so popular? Everytime we walk into the assembly the Sophomores stare at us as though they had never seen us before. Miss Cripe, why didn't you let the Shorthand Class write their own Shorthand Dictionary instead of making us pay for a Gregg Shorta hand Dictionary? After we got it, Gregg's writing wasn't even like ours and I'm sure we were right. Where are all those good actors you had Juniors? Your play was good but you will have to admit ours was the best in the History of Millersburg High. QUWEE TU JUHIURS After four years of experience in high school life, we feel that we know a little more than our little brothers and sisters, the Juniors. We have decided to take this opportunity to pass-some of our information on to them.' Juniors, are you listening? Here comes our advice to you. Remember, the library is a place to study, not to con- verse. By all means keep the class announcements on the blackboard up to date. One week I thought there was a Junior class meeting every day, by the way the blackboard looked. I advise you to go to class on time. Never wait until three seconds before the last bell, then rush, sometime they may ring the bell early. ' Now I feel there are some of the Juniors who need a little extra advice. Junior Rogers, I advise you to decide which girl you want. It's terrible the way you break the hearts of so many girls. Richard Lantz you should go home earlier at night so you do not have to sleep overtime to get the sleep required for boys in training. ' Donald Bates, you should get over your bashfulness this summer, so you can really get in the swing of things next'year. I advise Velda Kline to quit arguing. Foxie, you know the teach- ers won't take it and the fellows will outwit you. Joan Custer and Junior Cramer should make more use of their red hair. You are spoiling the old saying of,HAnyone with red hair has a tcmper,H ' Doris Garber, will you muffle that giggle, we know you're in school. ' Broadway will soon be needing stars, so Pauline Whirledge and Alberta Groff you had better develop your singing ability. Ava Stiver, you should not study so hard because you show up the rest of the class. Bob Holse, you should leave the girls alone so the rest of the boys of the Junior Class will have a chance. Betty Rink, you had better leave your chewing gum at home. You know Betty, you're not supposed to chew gum in school, And so, as another year rolls by and you Juniors will be taking our places, we, the Seniors of IQLO, wish you the best of luck.
