Not that the year itself was precision- run tranquility for everyone involved, hut there were goings-on and comings-off we just canlt forget . . . Well, it's hard to tell far in advance, but any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday afternoon Finds the sun slowly sinking to its nadir in the west while assorted underlings shuffle into the cage to prepare the next issue faided and abetted by Sailorman Durfeej and editors sprawl around tables in the teachers' cafeteria drinking weak instant coffee and acting big. Despite our sloth, Guide Por! featured reports on student attitudes, censorship, the observations of students who had spent summers abroad, and the desirability of material rewards in a scholastic institution. Yet we still failed to achieve our shining goal: to make one entire issue a four-page parenthetical clause. Sincerely, ELLEN and STEVE JUNIOR PLAYERS OFFICERS: Barium beualr, left lu rigbfw-V. Edgar, B. Marcus, R. Rosen- berg, V. Paley. kl. Mandelker, Slrmdizzg-Mr. Dear Audience: junior Players emoted, costumed, collected props, publicized, built sets, applied make-up, painted, and wore themselves out in committee work, club productions and two three-acters: Anne Franles poignant Diary and the ever-popular Om' Hearn' ll ere Yozmg and Gay. Thespians' year was busy, too. Two inductions and a Xmas assembly kept members on their foot-lighted toes. Removing the grease point, we quietly retire into the wings and turn the spotlight over to next years ofbcers and tbeatricals. The selective membership organizations, Key Club and the Hi-Y, were bombarded by Guide Port criticism. Meanwhile, the service groups aided the North Shore Child Guidance Center and United Community Fund, taught handicapped children to swim, delivered daily newspapers and Thanksgiving baskets, ran a book store, snack bar and lost-and-found, cleared vacant lots, licked the faculty at basketball, and baked mouth- watering morsels of pastry to be sold at Stern's. TAPI members continued to struggle with the lovable, but headstrong, little monsters of Henry Street, and were twice honored-with the Parenfr Magazine Youth Group Award and a spread in the New York Herald Tribune. Quite a positive school service record! Sincerely, FRED and ERIC. ALPHA HI-Y KEY CLUB GIRLS' HI-Y T. A. P. BASEBALL The key to Blazer diamond strength in a tight season lay with a strong battery, a veteran inneld, and a hard-hitting out-field. Mound might was due to the varied pitches of starters Pete Klein- man and Vic Zinn. Tim Carmody and junior six- footers Howie Schackter and strike-out star Bob Kohansky completed Blazer pitching strength, with returning letterman Tony Handel playing a strong season behind the plate. Around the horn, it was Jeff Seigel at Hrst, Steve Dressner at sec- ond, lead hitter Mel Barkan at short, and Barry Levine or Richie Klein at third. Powerhouse Willy Mandel aced in center, and Bob Chaiken and Ken Leiblein sparked the team in left and right respectively. The JayVee ball club wafted through a .500 season, held together at the plate and on the mound. Lead hitter Jack Drucker chalked up a phenomenal .500-plus average. On the other side of the ball, JV hurlers Dave Levin, Butch Mil- ler, and Ricky Ostrowe evinced a strong Varsity mound brigade in '61. After receiving her B.A. at Montclair State Teachers College and her M.A. at Middlebury, Mrs. Bates continued her education at the University of Rennes in France, the University of Santiago in Chile, and the University of Berlin. EDGAR 79 Inside Great Neck today three teachers pack their trunks to trade the split-level suburbias of Long Island for the good earth of far off climes and retirement. In the hectic days of F. D. R. and the N. R. A., when Great Neck High was still hailed a paragon of modern architecture, all three trekked here. Mr. David Edgar and Mrs. Frieda Thompson, without any known collaboration, left their re- spective Midwest homes in the early '30's for the Northeast Coast. Travelling was not new to social studies teacher Mr. Edgar. He had sought the fruits of wisdom at Chicago, Berkeley and Co- lumbia. Mrs. Thompson combined an Iowa State education with pre-campus teaching experience in a one-room school house. Her Great Neck specialty has been English. From Rochester in I34 came Mr. Chamberlain, and to Rochester he will return. Withoiit the aid of power steering this venerable advocate of drivers' ed coached soccer, basketball, track, and intramurals in one year. As Mr. Edgar sets his sights for golden California and Mrs. Thompson aims for tranquil Vermont, Mr. Chamberlain will ante settling his Rochester farm with a trip to West Palm Beach, Florida. The high- light of Kleebop's Birthday Party was a spoof of Great Neckis venerable order of Kilties, as nine of our most versatile', boys danced in old Highland tradition, which they set back several more centuries, The path through sophomorehood led '62-ers to ancient Greece via class paper Alpha Omega, which letters signify the beginning and the end of high school. Or did our sponsor say we'd hit the beginning of the end? In late winter notice came from the Great Khan that the Class of '62 was to pick a standard school ring. We waded through bogs of indecision, sales pitches, and class polls, finally deciding the class wanted the same ring that has traditionally been popular in Great Neck. Undaunted by the I-told-you-so's of upper- HS0lllEll'b6I'?H Pighr Knuckles, Clam Broth, and D. D, T. classmen, Sophs rushed forward to enjoy the sun, sports, and warm soda of a class picnic. Dear Fellow Students: In keeping with its policy of doing absolutely nothing with any semblance of sanity, the Class of 1961 climaxed an effort to transport Transylvania into the boys' gym, with the quiet hysteria of the nation's THIRD largest election, the class party's C. S. O. G. N. N. werewolf calling contest. Bob Scheur copped top lycanthropic honors. Non-conforming again, we tried a new and surprising and successful decorating pattern at the prom in March. The theme was Night Lights and the setting was Central Parkish and late springish, but lo !-outside were 16 inches of snow. Post-prom night clubbing was replaced by post-prom digging cars out of snow drifts. It is, therefore, no wonder that spring found juniors gaily bounding barefoot through the grass at any excuse, tritzling, for instance, to our annual sodafest and sports joust, somewhat congruent to a picnic. At the class dinner he sat in the president's hot seat and yet not one potato gem rolled off his fork. His curveball proved almost as effective during question periods at Senior Class assemblies as it did on the mound. Pete's pushing and pulling helped make the Senior Prom more than a glorified G. O. dance. l red Brafman Allene Rubin Students electing Allene as a winner in the senior citizenship roll last December were surely unaware that she still attends movies at kiddie rates. Then again, perhaps this was why she was so repected. It is her child-like, but not childish, enthusiasm which made her such an effective chairman for Elysium last year. It has been suggested that Allene's highly original laugh be broadcast over the P. A. system each morning to waken lethargic students and send them scurrying out of homeroom. Fred has had a hand for two in many of the year's most successful projects. In conceiving the Extended Action Committee, affectionately called the D. Committee by the masses, he greatly broadened the scope and responsibility of the G. O. Wl1erex'er he went, Fred was respected for his willingness to express his opinions, undoubtedly a factor in his leading the Blazer talkers to victory in a debate at Hofstra. Also, Fred was known for his sportsmanship on and off the basketball court and in the cafeteria. He is the unofficial Statistician of G. Nfs track and baseball team. Roberta IHC Early this year one sophomore ran home at five 0'clock screaming he had just seen a Cheshire cat in the school halls. Actually it was our own Roberta keeping her usual late hours to work on the Senior Dinner. Since ninth grade when she was G. O. secretary, Roberta has been an active class member. Word has slipped out that she was not only captain of Varsity cheerleaders but that she secretly coached both our football and basketball teams. ENI OR 126 Eric Gruenstein As class president in tenth grade, Eric led us in our last year of split session and unsplit Great Neck. Maintaining contacts in the main ofhce, Eric had two lunch periods and he was seen walking in the halls without a yellow slip.
