McAnn 1983 Our Pride Is Showing Miller City High School Miller City, Ohio Teresa Kleman Editor Table of Contents Our School Day . ... 4 School Activities 16 Administration and Faculty 54 Seniors 58 Underclassmen, Teams, Organizations 80 Ads 11® Closing 128 i This year we wish to present to you a yearbook that has captured the year as it really occurred. We want you to see not only our achievements, but also the people who are the achievers. So, we’ve given our book a new look. We begin by showing how our school day progresses and all our various activities. Then we proudly present to you the people involved. We’ve placed the group pictures later in the book so that we could show you more of what we’ve accomplished. Finally we bring to you our sponsors who have made this yearbook possible. 2 Owi nccCe Sfauvcay AN Oh! no, late again! How many time have you said this as you leap out of bed? Now you have to take a shower, wash hair, brush teeth, get dressed, and run out the door as the bus is coming down the road. Once on the bus, you try to catch up on some of those Zzzz’s. The driver, though, has other plans. He purposely hits every bump, pothole, or tree limb to make sure no one sleeps. Then at school you throw your books in the locker and lunge on the nearest heater to seek warmth in this frozen tundra. The teachers, meanwhile, are downing their last megadoses of caffeine before they have to face their morning class. Some of the teachers, however, are convinced that the walls are unsturdy. Every morning one can find these few holding up the walls of Miller City High School. Well, once agains the first bell has rung, and everyone is trudging off to class for another day of — learning? Pictured above left is: Larry Gerschutz, the custodian. Above are the bus drivers. They include: Mr. Thomas Niese, Mr. Steve Powell, Mrs. Connie Rump, Mrs. Betty Maag, Mr. Ed Mormon, Mrs. Shirley Ellerbrock and Mrs. Barb Riepenhoff. Pictured just to the left is: custodian Gary Verhoff at New Cleveland. 5 BRRRRRRING . . . Morning bell, and everyone rushes to get to class. So much happens in the morning, such as the Home Ec. and Vo Ag switch during vocational week. Picture this . . . Guys in the kitchen of the Home Ec. room baking, and better yet, picture the girls in the Vo Ag room cutting wood. Hard to believe? We thought so! One great thing was the morning assemblies. This meant that we students got out of those long hard classes. We were entertained by country western singers, actors who put on a one act play, and football player Ken Ellis. Also the National Honor Society sponsored a Blood Drive. Oh! My goodness! The bell’s gonna ring so we can all go to lunch. BRRRRRRING . . . 6 Along with all our other activities we must not forget all of our students and friends who donated blood. This bloodmobile day was held May 10 and a traveling trophy was presented to the NHS who sponsored it. This trophy was given for having the highest percentage of donors from among those eligible to give. We salute our donors. 9 10 This is the long awaited period of the day! Everyone pours into the cafeteria to fill their tummies with food, while some will have to stand in line and wait. Lunch is not only the time to eat, but also a time for playing on the playground, or playing volleyball, basketball, wiffle ball or just plain sitting around and talking in the gym. 11 And so the school day continues on. For some the afternoon goes fast, and for others the clock doesn’t seem to move. As the bell rings ending another class, the hallways are soon filled with kids who just can’t wait to get to their next class, or those lucky few with early dismissals who head out of the door. The afternoons were filled with classes in Home Ec., Vo. Ag., studyhalls, TOE, and math. During basketball season we could always count on shortened class periods because of pep rallies. We not only could show our spirit, but we actually got out of classes. The students looked forward to these almost as much as hearing that last bell ring at 2:57. Then the halls echoed with the mad rush to lockers to grab coats and books, and to finally head for the bus to get the back seat before it pulls away. 13 uu w Future Homemakers of America FHA was filled with much activity this year. The fall county FHA meeting was held in Miller City, and shown at top right is Jackie Neise who was one of the county officers. FHA gave prizes for the most creative costume on Halloween and one of the participants was Brenda Walls, pictured at right. For FHA week they had a McDonalds Day where Rose Schroeder can be seen smelling the goodies. Along with all of those activities, the Seniors put on a smorgasbord, below. At bottom right, is shown Advisor Mrs. Mary Jane Miller and President Rose Hermiller. ft h. 17 The Miller City FFA was very active during the 1982-83 season. They engaged in such activities as fruit sale, Kiddie Land, and catching chickens. FFA projects were done by all members. Field trips are scheduled during the summer to places such as Dinner Bell and Hancor Tile and Cole. Field Day Freshman Mixer This year, Field Day was held September 17, 1982. The main attraction was The Dunking Machine. Everyone came to watch the teachers, especially Mr. Lenz, swim. The Seniors came out on top with 52 points. Sophomores second with 39 points, Freshmen third with 35 points and last but not least the Juniors with 30 points. That night was the Annual Freshman Mixer with Soundwaves to entertain everyone. 20 Elementary Plays The elementary students have been busy practicing and presenting plays during the 1982-83 school year. Miller City hosted the annual Christmas play the evening of December 20 for parents and friends. On February 18, the second grade performed a play which concluded their week of projects celebrating American History month. Parents and grandparents attended and enjoyed homemade ice cream. 21 This year Miller City had the honor of hosting the Annual County Band and Choir Concert. The event was held December 5, 1982. The band was directed by Dr. Barry Kopetz of Bowling Green State University. Some of the selections performed were “The Best of Jule Styne,” “Sleigh Ride” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The choir was directed by Mr. Harold Beckett of Shawnee High School. Some of the songs sung included “Benediction,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” and “Gavotte for Bach.” The senior high band and choir performed at their Christmas and spring concerts again this year. The band selections included “Man of La Mancha” and “Concert Band Medley.” The choir sang “Dream a Dream” and “The Circle Game.” The junior high choir also performed. The pep band had another successful year. They really added spirit to the basketball games. They deserve much appreciation for all their hours of practice. Some of the songs played this year were “We Got The Best,” “Eye of the Tiger,” and “Centerfold.” 22 Volleyball Miller City’s volleyball team was unfortunate in the number of wins registered, but fans who observed the matches were treated to some of the most exciting games in our area. Our girls played with determination, hustle, and a great desire to win. The team often ended up in the loss column following a tough match, but those of us who witnessed the match were proud of our girls and knew they had given their best to represent MCHS. The girls finished the season with a record of 2-17. 24 Right: Senior Pam Verhoff 25 26 The 1982 golf team was led by three-year lettermen Tom Niese and Dale Lammers. Dale had the low average with a 41 and was medalist eight times. The best team score was 169 vs. Ottawa-Glandorf at Kildaire Country Club. The varsity included Tom Niese, Dale Lammers, Dave Gable, Dave Watson who are all seniors and Dave Warnimont, a sophomore. We also were able to field a reserve team this year, allowing the underclassmen some experience for the years to come. The varsity ended the season at 8-10 and the reserve at 4-8. Special thanks to the graduating seniors for getting the golf program rolling again at Miller City. Senior Dale Lammers There was a BIRD . . . Where’s the bird, Mr. Z??? Right: Seniors Jay Meyer and Bev Schroeder 28 The 1982-83 basketball season provided the people of our school district with much excitement and a great deal of success. Our boys captured another sectional championship enroute to their second consecutive district appearance. Our season ended with a heartbreaking 59-57 loss to Ottoville, but we still finished with an excellent 19-4 record. Although we have some good players returning next year to carry on the winning tradition at Miller City, gone are five seniors that we will miss very much. These graduates are Jeff Vennekotter, Norm Gerten, Ned Kreinbrink, Jay Meyer, and Dale Lammers. These young men were not only fine athletes, but quality people. They were instrumental in the successes of many programs in the Miller City High School. We are confident that these gentlemen will continue to succeed, but we would like them to do so with our best wishes. 29 Girls Basketball Senior Kris Lammers Senior Tina Niese Senior Karen Schroede Senior Lois Hermiller The 1982-83 girls basketball season was filled with excitement. The season ended with a 10-12 record. They had many close games and showed a willingness for victory. The girls showed much enthusiasm, and the spirit to win. The team lost six seniors, Kris Barlage, Kris Lammers, Lois Hermiller, Jackie Niese, Tina Niese, and Karen Schroeder, who really helped out this year. The seniors and coach Paul Niese would like to thank those who helped make their season a successful one. Senior Jackie Niese Senior Kris Barlage 30 Freshman Basketball The freshman team, coached by Elmer Meyer, showed much improvement this year. The team exhibited enthusiasm and determination throughout the season. These qualities will later benefit the boys in preparing to play as members of the junior varsity and varsity teams. We eagerly await to see them next year. “There’s the bird, Mr. McGlaughlln!” Junior High Boy’s Basketball Our seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams proved very exciting this year. Much credit goes to the seventh grade coach, Jerry Lammers, and Mel Kreinbrink, the eighth grade coach. They instructed our junior high in the basic fundamentals of the game, yet, stressing sportsmanship. We look forward to seeing these boys in years to come. 33 Junior High Girls Basketball The Junior High girls basketball team had an enjoyable season and are looking forward to next season. The seventh grade was headed by Coach Barb Verhoff and the eighth grade coach is Wilma Vennekotter. 34 Homecoming 1982 The Homecoming Game took place on December 10, 1982 against Holgate. Miller City defeated the opposing team 73 to 65. The Homecoming Dance was held the following night with music by Future. The Ohio Office Education Association consists of 13 members, with Lois Hermiller as President. The OOEA raised money for their trip to the Regional Contest by selling popcorn and holding a cake raffle at the volleyball games. This Regional Contest was held on Feb. 12, 1983 at Bellefontantaine. At this contest Miller City took 1st place in the Talent Show. The girls participating in this were, Kris Barlage, Tine Cass, Tina Niese, Teresa Rosengarten, and Karen Schroeder. Miller City also had some other winners. They were: Annette Wilhelm, 2nd place Typing and Related II; Karen Schroeder, 5th place Prepared Speech; Kris Barlage, 3rd place Records Management. 37 This year a group of talented high school students put on a variety show. This took place on March 13 at 7:30. Faculty advisors were Mr. Stephen Powell and Mrs. Iantha Barlage. Shown above in rehearsal are Steve Alt playing “Johnny’s Tune” on the fiddle along with Greg Barlage and Rick Thornton doing the famous “Who’s on First.” Above right, Jill Inkrott and Rose Hermiller are singing their version of Together, Wherever We Go.” Pictured at the bottom are Lori Ellerbrock, Maryann Klexar, and Shelly Schieber accompanied by Joan Riepenhoff on guitar singing “The Rose.” Other acts included “Rocky Top” sung by Shelly Schieber, Laura Beining singing “Time in a Bottle” and “Satisfaction” played by the Pep Band. A group of Senior guys finished off the show with “Happy Trails.” 38 Quarterly Staff This year’s City Quarterly was once again done by the journalism class with four issues being printed and the last being the senior edition. This year involved a lot of hardwork but also some fun with the paper sometimes being put together on time and sometimes not being put together on time. Endless hours were spent with the copymachine waiting for the hundreds of copies to be run off, then stapled and addressed. Thanks to a hardworking staff this year’s City Quarterly was just great. Special thanks goes to Co- editors Brian Klear and Lisa Weis and Quarterly advisor Mr. Tom Slagel. Track Once again the M.C. track team was off and running. Thanks to Coach Mumaw, the girls didn’t have to put in hours of rigorous conditioning. The M.C. new track warm- ups gave the girls pride which enabled them to score 40 points and beat another team. These meets began in March and many times the girls participated in several meets per week. A new added attraction for the M.C. was the arrival of the high jump. A couple athletes decided to participate in this event while others polished their talents with the hurdles, shot puts, and other running events, and many beat their old times and set new records. The season ended with Lois Hermiller going to the Regional competition on May 26th. She competed in the shot put. It was a first time occurrence for Lois as well as the team. This is the third year our team has been in existance. Many of these Seniors were the ones who started and supported track at M.C.H.S. We thank you and salute you for your hard work and dedication. Best of luck in your futures. We welcome the returning track team and Coach Mumaw back into the pages of our book and also wish them luck next year. Despite two losses early on in the season to Columbus Grove and Ayersville, Miller City showed tremendous come-back by bringing home five team trophies. They were Sectional, District, Regional, and PCL Champions. They finished the season by becoming State Runners-Up, losing to Ashtabula St. John, 2-10. Much recognition goes out to the six seniors, whose leadership and skill was a definite plus for the team. Those six and the rest of Coach Kern’s Varsity team displayed all the teamwork and cooperation it takes to be a winning team. On behalf of the community, we are extremely proud of their accomplishments. FFA Banquet The FFA Banquet was held on March 15, 1983. It began at 6:30 with the eating of the meal. The guest speaker was Emerson Marting. The 1983 FFA Queen was Pam Verhoff, and the attendants were Marsha Balbaugh and Bev Schroeder. 44 The 3rd Annual F.H.A. Banquet was held on April 19, 1983 at 6:30 in the High School Gymnasium. The meal consisted of a salad bar and desserts prepared by the Future Homemakers of America. Mrs. Gerten prepared the main course of steak, mashed potatoes, corn, and dinner rolls. After the meal there was a style show and there was awards given. 45 Mr Prom The Junior-Senior Prom was held on April 29, 1983. Pictured above are the royalty for 1983. The Seniors started out from Miller City at 4:15, beginning the exciting bus ride to Toledo. Like all class trips the bus ride was one of the highlihghts of the trip, with the laughter and excitement in the air. Soon they arrived at the dinner theater. The evening began with a trip to the salad bar and then on to a buffet meal of tropical delight! Soon the Preshow started in which the waiters and waitresses entertained the Seniors with song and dance. The presentation of ‘South Pacific’ was directly after the preshow. After the show they all loaded up on the bus and headed back to old M.C. It was an enjoyable and unforgettable experience for all! 62 Graduation The graduation ceremony which was held May 20, marked the final step for the seniors.
