A eloomy isolated old house is the background of the play. The story begins about 11:30, on a cold, rainy night. Mr. Gregory Long is a wealthy old man who lives with his two attendants in a once handsome, but now a dilapidated old mansion. His great niece, Sylvia Long, whom he has never seen, arrives one night to pay him a visit. She brings with her, her aunt, girl friend, and fiance. A night of terror then follows. While a man with a green wierd light and only three fingers comes in, a gun shot comes from the back. When morning comes, their anxiety increases. From now on many strange things happen which they can not figure out For instance, who is the man who shot at Aunt Tessie? Who threw Sylvia in the well? Who threw the message from the top of the house? Who is the man with only three fingers? Just at the critical moment when everything is going wrong, Paul comes to the rescue. They then find out that Mike Denson is the one with only three fingers and was playing the part of Uncle Gregory.
