The class of 1962 was invited back for the festivities and to be honored at the dance with the theme of Heaven Tonight. By Friday everyone was excited for the game with the Pearl City Wolves. To be successful in a sport, as in any aspect of life, one must have high expectations and confidence while believing in oneself and each other. With a burning belief in them- selves. the 1981 Missiles over- came pre season doubts, a very tough schedule, and a great deal of criticism to ex- plode to 9 straight victories, a conference championship, and another berth in the play- offs. Although they were not always visually emotional, these young men possessed an inner sense of purpose, pride, and emotion unique to their group. They knew what they wanted and how to go after it. They were Better Because They Wanted To Be.” Thanks to Ray, Paul, Jim, Doug, Bill, Jeff, Keith, Ted, David, Stacey, Brent, and Burt for exciting football during their careers. All were great examples of cooperation, dedication, and commitment that young athletes should “mirror as they grow. Good luck as you leave us and re- member our doors are always open. Coaches L-R: R. The Missiles Are Movin' Up!— That was the battle cry of the 1981-82 Missiles Basketball Team. A bold statement for a team that had finished in the second spot in the Conference the pre- vious year and now was very inexperienced, and 1 returning starter, and was depending on help from the Sophomore class. However, ignoring doubters, these Missiles set their goals high. While the Missiles stumbled the first part of the year, they main- tained their confidence in themselves and kept focus on their goals. Using M.T.X.E. — Mental Toughness and extra Effort — plus a total team effort, the Missiles overcome this slow start and put the pieces together after Christmas. The Missiles went 11- 13 after the break and clinched the Northwest Conference Crown by beating previous co-leader Mt. Carroll the last two games of the regular season. The first game was an exciting 2 point victory in the Hawk’s backyard. In the rematch on the Missiles' home court before a packed, standing room only crowd, the Missiles took charge and led from start to finish winning 65-49. The victory made for a very enjoyable Parent’s Night and a successful home exit for our Seniors. In Regional play, the Missiles fell to tournament host Sterling Newman 73-65. Even in losing the battling Missiles again showed the determination to go after a high goal and give their best effort. These '81-’82 Missiles showed that they were winners. They finished with a 15-10 record overall and most importantly 10-2 in Conference play thereby winning an undisputed Northwest 8 Con- ference Crown. They believed in themselves, set high goals, and then worked to get them. They programmed themselves for suc- cess and left no doubt that the Missiles had indeed “Moved Up”.
