THE MILLWHEEL Pagel ln Retrospect We find that the 1951-1952 school year brought about a multitude of changes. Greatest and foremost of these was the completion and dedication of the new addition to the school. The maze of bricks and pipes was gone, and lo, there stood the blue-print in reality: a spacious gym, locker and shower rooms, a stage, new offices and infirmary, practice and band rooms, an agricultural laboratory and modern, com- fortable classrooms. Dabs of paint and hours spent in shifting and improving the physi- cal plant served as an added incentive for faculty and students alike to make the most of the opportunities available. It was a good year .... ,feng 1 l itil , L New rjevm - Page2 THE MILLWHEEL Left: Rose Ritenour, office secretary, aids Dick Wolf in a candy sale. Right: Mr. M. SCHOOL BOARD Everything and anything that is bought, sold or considered for Milledgeville Grade and High School must be sanctioned or vetoed by the seven men who comprise the School Board. In addition to regular meetings, the board members, like the mem- bers of Congress are called upon to decide issues of emergency which may arise at any time. Matters of administration which must be dc- cided by them are the allotment of school funds, the development of the overall physical plant, the employment of faculty members and hundreds of other items. BUS DRIVERS Whether the rain is pouring, the snow drifting, or the roads muddy or covered with a glare of ice, there will be eight people out battling these elements-the bus drivers. Rural students constitute nearly three fourths of the school popu- lation, so when the roads and by-ways become completely impassablc, everyone is given an unscheduled school holiday. These bus drivers are the life line of the school and if they cannot get through, it is very unlikely that anyone else will. Little did they realize the impressions they would make and leave behind. In that first year, they elected Archie Woodin as presidentg Ray Polhill, vice president and Fred Hutchinson, secretary-treasurer. Dave Bushman and Wilma Loechel meekly carried their suggestions to the Student Council. Miss Duffelmeir served as adviser. Lois Cheeseman presided over the Class of'52 in their Sophomore year. Her assistants were: Wilma Loechel, vice presidentg and Louise Lundy, secretary-treasurerg Janice Wolf and Archie Woodin, Student Council. Miss Phyllis Sweet acted as adviser. The Class of '52 became well known during their Junior year. When it came time for the prom with their theme of A Little Bit of Heaven, these democratic petitioners wanted outside guests. After a good deal of hard work and much fast talking, they got their way. Their play, The Scarlet Shadow, was a success too. fcontinued on page 131 Page 12 THE MILLWHEEL BETTY SHORT A serious girl, but still loads of fun. When she does a thing it is really well done. School is what you make it. Just to review what the various classes have done this past year which have been educational and interesting let us recall some of the outstanding events. Early in the Fall, Mrs. Rolls' speech and Miss Gall's English four classes combined their efforts to present the High Schools On Parade radio broadcast from Station WLBK in DeKalb. Scripts and nar- rations were original and the school made a fine showing. Journalism students took a field trip to The Sterling Gazette in Sterling to learn more about the newspaper. Several of the students' works also appeared in the newly established Mil1edgeville News. Miss Hauge's science students learned and applied practical, every day science when boys and girls alike emerged with a volume of knowledge. It was no unusual sight to behold them taking complicated motors apart and re-assembling them or to find them changing flat tires. Even the math students proved their creativeness in decorating a Christmas tree with geometric figures under Miss Kuhlman's dis- cerning direction. G69 Page 22 THE MILLWHEEL JUNIOR CLASS Row 1: D. Johnny Parks, Nona Loechel and Lee Polhill were Council members. Mrs. Muriel Rolls advised. The first problem to confront the new officers was the Hallowe'en float competition which was rated second by the judges. Close on its heels, followed the dance the following week. Biggest and foremost of the problems which had to be solved was that of the prom. Coat checking at basketball games, selling candy during the noon hour and serving the Annual Carroll County Conference Athletic dinner were all utilized as means and ways to defray the expenses for the prom. All Juniors cooperated in these activities from making tennis shoe nut- cups to peeling potatoes. Working in hushed silence, crews worked secretly on the decora- tions for the prom. The new gym was converted into a South Sea Island scene with imported palm trees, coral reefs. With a stretch of the imagination, one could pretend that he was on the Hawaiian Islands. The prom went off in fine style! fs 4 .. v x nl .I I .--.- tang . . ,Z , .un . Page 24 THE MILLWHEEL Row 1 Row 2 Row 1 Row 2: Row 3: Row 1: Row 2: Row 3: SOPHOMORE CLASS P. Wolf, D. Hacker, O. Public appearances through- out the year included: the Fall Festival at Sterlingg a performance at Normal University Homecoming at Bloomingtong the local Hallowe'en celebration and basketball fans found all the games at home punc- tuated With peppy band numbers. One great asset to the band was the new uniforms acquired through the support of the Band Boosters Club. Another was the completion and employment of the new practice rooms, both of which have been needed for a long time. Musical director, Homer Herink, conducted the Memorial Day and Spring Concert series. The latter featured many interesting numbers, with Frank Miller, acting as student band leader. Participation in the musical contest at Fulton in March brought ad- ditional laurels. Those Home Ec. girls can really cook! Remarks like this were heard around school and registered approval for the hot lunch program which the FHA initiated during the winter. Even though this program was short lived because of its replaces ment by the opening of the cafeteria in February, the club's activities did not cease. These ambitious lasses sold popcorn, candy and soft drinks during the basketball season. All of these undertakings served as a means of obtaining the various Homemaking degrees for the members. Early in the fall, a group of the girls attended the House of Dele- gates meeting in Chadwick. Here they obtained useful information they utilized in making their own club more effective. Private and all school parties, caroling sessions and a hay rack ride rounded out the year's social and recreational program. Officers for the year included: Marilyn Bushman, president, Jeanne Sherwin, vice president, Carol Barthel, secretary, Lois Cheeseman, treasurer, Josephine Wolf, reporter, and Dorothy Shipman, parliamen- tarian. Mrs. Margaret Scholl served as adviser, and Mrs. Harry Cheeseman as Chapter Mother. Page 38 THE MILLWHEEL FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA So closely is the Future Farmers of America associated with the agriculture department of our school that it can scarcely be classified as an extra-curricular activity. The local chapter, supervised by Mr. Glenn Curl, is affiliated with state and national chapters of F.F.A. Each of these potential farmers selects some agricultural project which he would like to develop throughout the year. Aids are made available in the form of materials and pamphlets. Participation in such projects leads to the conferring of the various Greenhand and Chapter Farmer Degrees. Besides their regular activities, the members found time to send delegates to the National F.F.A. Convention in early Fall, hold a rodent contest, sell seeds and cider, and sponsor a father and son banquet. At the latter event, Dave Bushman was presented the DeKalb Hybrid Corn Award for 1952. Hugh Senneff and Ronald Miatke were made Honorary members. Senior officers for the year were Dave Bushman, presidentg Rich- ard Robinson, vice president, John Parks, secretary, Marvin Anderson, treasurer, Cecil Geerts, reporter and Ralph Weidel, sentinel. THE MILLWHEEL Page39 LIBRARIANS Is the book Lou Gehrig in? Can you tell me where the fiction books are? Where could I find something about Shakespeare? These, and countless others, are the questions that the student librarians must be prepared to answer every day. The upperclassmen who volunteer study periods to aid in the library, gain valuable experience in utilizing the few but essential reference resources which are available. These assistants track down books, check them in and out, and keep the library in order. A display en- titled Adventure Thru Books was assembled by these librarians. With the advent of Spring, shelves and racks had a thorough going over. Mrs. Muriel Rolls was the faculty member in charge of the library and all of the activities which stemmed from it. divx l l N ! l 'J r all M! do Q X I HH . THE MILLWHEEL Page 41 Millwheel Staff The staff of the 1952 MILLWHEEL are students who have done their best to record the events of the year in Milledgeville Community High School. They wished to compile an annual that presented a picture typical of high school life, and they now present this book as the result, hoping for your approbation. Early in September, Editor-in-Chief Frank Miller selected his staff. At their many meetings the staff prepared a rough draft of the plans for the book. After much discussion they finally agreed on the final layout. Louise Lundy and Janice Wolf, Associate Editors, and Janeth Plog and Richard Wolf, Junior Assistant Editors, all aided in ironing out the details of organization. Dorothy Shipman had the task of soliciting, collecting and filing advertisements. Douglas Clough snapped the ever popular candid shots. Copy editor Lois Cheeseman oversaw the assigning, writing and collecting of all written matter. Lee Polhill as Sports Editor compiled the season's sports statistics and had charge of their write up. Lyle Sucher and Janet Taylor drew the cartoons. Miss Elizabeth Gall acted as adviser. This book would never have been possible if the two score people, the staff members, the teachers, the individuals behind the scenes had not cooperated wholeheartedly. ff ' N f Me M ones? lx .K X r 4 U ,r4.llWll :iff If rr .123 59. rf A Page 42 THE MILLWHEEL AROUND THE CLOCK, Left: Practical training is what these girls re- ceive in their Home Economics courses. THE MILLWHEEL Page 55 M CLUB At the beginning of the 1951-52 year, the lettermen of the M Club voted Ray Polhill, senior, as their president. Lyle Sucher, junior, was elected to serve as secretary. The job of treasurer went to Lee Polhill, junior. Adviser for the group is Coach Dale Cline. With a membership of seventeen boys, the club sold some 500 penn cils on which was printed the basketball schedule for the year, and sponsored the Donkey Basketball game in the Spring. Both under- takings netted the club a noteworthy sum which was used to pay for the new scoreboard. 0 2? TRACK With the new gym as the scene of the indoor track workouts, the boys certainly got themselves into tip-top condition. Since the new track is not completed, the boys will have all of their meets away from home. Numerous track meets are on the agenda, and as We go to press, everyone is anticipating the Carroll County Conference Track meet which will take place later. Page 56 THE MILLWHEEL SOFTBALL Row 1: D.
