The adventures of this voyage are recorded in this 1950- 1951 Kaldron. As the sailor uses the Ship's Log to bring back past happenings, the staff hopes that you will use this Kaldron to bring back memories of your days at M. 1-I. S. new ' It is fitting that, in these confused and critical times, the 1951 Kaldron be dedicated to Mr. Smith who has done so much to prepare us to face the many problems that will confront us. His absence from Millcreek would leave an empty spot in our school life. For his understanding, for his patience, and for his sincerity, We have all come to respect and appreciate our Mr. Smith. :Wwe Once again, here as schoolmates assemble, We fain would lift our hearts in song, To our High School, our dear Alma Mater, Let gladness the moments prolong, We are proud of our lad and our lasses, Of honors Won in days gone by, So here's a cheer for our old High School, For our old High School, Our dear Old High! Here's to our Classes Here's to our lasses, Here's to the lads they adore: Here's to the Seniors, so mighty, luniors so flighty, Freshies and Sophomore, Let mirth and gladness, Banish all sadness, And as the days go by, We promise you'll find us ready, earnest and steady Boosting for Millcreek High! Soon for us will the school days be ended, The dreams of youth, that fade so fast, But We know that the heart oft will ponder, In mem'ry, o'er scenes that are past, There are joys that will long be remember'd, And friendships, too, that ne'er can die, Then here's a cheer for our old High School, Our dear Old High! , 'Ro' FACULTY ,N-I ,MMM 'Q9dT.L-vwwomvw xv-.N..ng'.'i,f3'Mw-f Y ----- faomgb '0'Gs?3z9vW ' f I I 1 I Sh? SHIRLEY KESTLE For the past few weeks the newspapers, radio and television have been announcing to the people the corruption that is taking place in government and sports. Men who have been respected and admired by the public have found to be ruthlessly breaking the law. The name which they bear drops from honor to disgrace. The Class of 1951 represents the future citizens of tomorrow. The name which you bear should be held in high esteem-remember that it is your father's name. May you keep it clean and honorable, not only for your own sake but that of your family. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of l95l. IAMES S. RUTH BLAIR To the Class of 1951 : Your outlook on life has a great deal to do with what your life will be -perhaps far more than you dream. You are not going to be happy in life, no matter what degree of financial success you achieve, unless you feel that your work is important-that it requires your best. Do not forget that it is the man who does the Work who grows in doing and the greatest thing in life is growth. When in your process of growing, you come to the point where you do not know which way to turn-don't turn. Take a fresh grip on faith and steer straight ahead. You will find helpful this bit of advice from an unknown author. When you are forming your opinionsp Do it careful-go slow, Hasty judgments oft are followedg By regretting-that, I knowg And in arguments be careful: Not to quickly to decide, Try to look upon the subject, From the other fellows side. . We realized that co- operation and hard work were the only things that would get us success- fully through high school. 1947-48 Our Freshman Year-at last we were organized as a class and we were rather proud of being known as 'lfreshies -as this was the first direct act of recognition from the upper classmen. Our class was well represented at the school functions. We took it upon ourselves to sponsor a skating party and a class party which were both very successful. We took another step in the developing of our class by electing officers to lead us. They were: President, Rich Vommoro, Vice-President, Keith Turner, Secretary, Margaret Anderson, and Treasurer, Dick Post. 1948-49 As Sophomores, we had a busy year. Prominent in Y-Teens, Hi-Y, G. A. C., and many other clubs, our group still found time to sponsor some activities of our own. First of these was a class party on October 26. A skating party on December 16 was our second project. Class officers for the year were: President, Forrest Walters, Vice-President, Barbara Smith, Secretary, Pete Traphagen, Treasurer, Roger Gillingham. 1949-50 During our lunior year we were leaders in school activities. Proof of this was seen in the lunior Play, Strange Borders and the memorable lunior-Senior Prom. We completed the year by serving as ushers and usherettes for the Baccalaureate and Commencement services. Our class officers were: President, Roger Gillingham, Vice-President, Barbara Smith, Secretary, Barbara Thompson, Treasurer, Nancy Huntington. 1950-51 The Class of 1951 elected Don lackson, President, Mary Lou Chiffon, Vice-President, Kathleen Hunter, Secretary, and Roger Gillingham, Treasurer, as their final class officers. Senior year marked the busiest year of our history. Special occasions which accented the year were the Senior Play, llOur Girls, the operetta, The Red Mill, a skating party, St. Pat's Dance, Senior Class Day, and most important was the day of Graduation. It was an active and enjoyable year, which increases the sorrow of parting from good old Millcreek High. K1-.823 NANCY RITA ADLER Nan Nurse, Y-Teens 3, 45 G. A. My love to the other two girls. I-low thankful I am that they are not boys. What a furor this simple message made in the Love- joy home! The reason was apparent, for the Lovejoy's three healthy, teenage sons, Vivian, Francis and lesse, didn't in the least resemble girls. If eccentric Aunt lessie discovered the truth she would cut them off without a cent, and money was sorely needed. Upon her arrival Aunt lessie was met by three rather strange young girls I don't know just what I expected, but certainly nothing like this, was her caustic comment. It was a desperate struggle but Iessie, Francis and Vivian made a valiant effort to act like young ladies -Aunt Iessie, however, discovered the hoax, took action herself, and became- Dear Aunt Iessie -the real guy. ' The cast included Charles Suerken, Roger Gillingham, Fred Amsler, Eugene Bloomwell, Eleanor Storaci, Lavonne Babcock, Doug Taylor, Claudine Carlson, Albert Eaton, Peggy Dunst, Lenore Goodrich. Lois Waldemarson was Student Director. l fe 31 lst Row: L. Goodrich, D. Glowacki, K. Hunter, M. Chiffon, N. Maguire, S, Manucci, M. l. Lund, E. Mason. Znd Row: L. Waldemarson, E. Storaci, M. Zalvhms This year's staff had many trying times before the book in its entirety was sent off to the printer. Writing and rewriting, arranging and rearranging, was part of a process which demanded much time and accurateness. This year's editor was Ronald Melgaard with Pete Traphagen as assistant editor. Keith Turner and Roger Gillingham took care of the money matters. Harold Hahn, supervising the art work, spent many hours laboriously arranging the lay out and art Work. Advertising and photographing were the first beginnings, then Lenore Goodrich and her crew began making the rounds of business establishments, and the students busily began indentifying pictures. Next, the dedication of the yearbook was voted upon by the class and the engraving and printing started rolling. Although it looked hopeless to many at the time, it gradually began to look more and more like a uniform and well arranged product. The creators of this yearbook hope that all who may look at the 1950-1951 history of M. H. S. will derive as much pleasure as those who helped make that history. 4:32, EDITOR-RON MELGAARD BUSINESS MANAGER--KEITH TURNER ASSISTANT EDITOR-PETE TRAPHAGEN ASS. BUS. They have suggested ideas, recommended changes in existing procedure, and aided in the execution of ad- ministration and faculty plans. This student organization sponsored gubernatorial and senatorial elections, a clean-up campaign and plans for the preparation of handbooks for the members ushered at assemblies, took part in introducing some of the speakers, and lead morning devotions. These students felt their great responsibility to themselves, teachers, fellow students, and administration. lt is hoped that more of the students, will come to recognize that the organization represents them and that it is through the student council that they as individuals have an active voice in school affairs. fc Dr PWS ' P The purpose of this committee is to plan adequate assembly programs for the students, having one every two weeks. They strive for a better quality of programs and to exchange talent with other schools. This year for the first time they had professional speakers at some of the assemblies. Each class elects a certain number ot students to represent them and these students chose David Evans to fill the ottice ot Secretary. Mrs. Samuelson is the Faculty Chairman and she, along with Mrs. Hahn and Miss Sherrange, compose the faculty advisors of this organization. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE Seated: D. MILLCREEK DEBATES WITH NEIGHBORING SCHOOLS The debate topic this year was: 'lResolved, that social welfare benefits should be extended by the federal government. The team had an unusually successful year and participated in eight debates with the city and county schools. The first four debates consisted of the regular five minutes speeches, three minute questioning periods, and the three minute rebuttals. However, the last four debates consisted of ten minute speeches, two speakers on each team, no questioning periods, and five minute rebuttals. This system added variety to the usually identical program and it was heartily welcomed by the students. This year's officers were: Forrest Walters-President, Charles Suerlcen-Vice-Presb dent, and Barbara Smith-Secretary-Treasurer. Under the careful supervision and invaluable help of Miss Shanor and Miss Powell, the Debate Club completed a successful season. 4:77p 'bdffiddltdgz Z9 One of the most necessary and useful of all the organizations is the traffic and hall patrol. Solving overcrowded conditions is their problem and they both have Worked out excellent and efficient methods of preventing congestion. The traffic patrol is present at all the home football games, guiding and directing the parking of cars. Their Worthy advisor is Mr. Smith who has greatly helped them achieve success. Mr. Nason is the advisor of the hall patrol. The patrolers stand at crucial points in the hall to guarantee the moving of student traffic. Bud Sprague, our rugged tackle, received a leg injury when he moved in on the first play of the game. The Trojans could not seem to get started in our first game of the season. TITUSVILLE ZZ - MILLCREEK 0 The rain and mud-wet, the play-rough, and after 48 minutes of play, the Trojans had lost their second straight game. Mi1lcreek's fight and never say die attitude highlighted an otherwise weak Trojan attack. CORRY 24 - MILLCREEK 6 Millcreek lost their third straight game at the hands of a crew of eager beavers on our home field 24-6. ln the fourth quarter, with Dick Gorr and Rich Vommoro carrying the mail, the Trojans scored their first touch- down of the season. Rich capped a 70 yard drive, scoring from 3 yards out. MILLCREEK 27 - MERCER 0 The night finally came when the cheerleaders could cheer This game belongs to us, as the previously winless Trojans trounced the Mustangs from Mercer. Millcreek scored in the first 2 minutes of the game, twice in the third quarter, and once again in the final stanza. The touchdowns were made by Rich Vommoro, 2, Sallot, and Debold. Red lackson made 2 of 3 placements. MILLCREEK Z0 - HICKORY 13 For the first time in Millcreek's history, the Trojans beat a Hickory team. Millcreek drew first blood as Rich Vommoro scored in the initial period. Frank Storaci passed 34 yeards to Dick Gorr for the Trojans second score. But it was a determined Hickory team that lined up for the second half kickoff. The Red and Black unleashed a passing attack which netted them 2 T D's and a tie at the end of the third quarter. With Davis and Vommoro doing the leg work and Storaci doing the passing, Millcreek marched 88 yards and the winning touchdown. Jackson made 2 of 3 placements. PENN HIGH 26 - MILLCREEK O Millcreek added a new team to their schedulep but Penn High of Greenville downed the Trojans 26-O. Greenville exhibited a varied attack in handing the Trojans their fourth loss of the year. MILLCREEK 13 - OIL CITY 7 Millcreek won it's third game of the season by defeating the winless Oilers 13-7. Rich scored the Trojans first T D on a 15 yard pass play. Davis scored off tackle and 1ackson converted to end Millcreek's scoring. HARBORCREEK 13 - MILLCREEK 12 Millcreek played their hearts out against their county rivals but just didn't have it when the chips were down. Harborcreek drew first blood on a 90 yard kickoff return. In the third quarter, Millcreek came back to score a tying touchdown: Vommoro plunging from the 3. After an exchange of punts, a Huskie lineman scored on a blocked Trojan punt. Vommoro climaxed an 80 yard drive, highlighted by Gorr's 50 yard run, with a plunge from the 2. The conversion play backfired and that was the game. CONNEAUT 25 - MILLCREEK 0 ln a steady drizzle, the Trojans from Ohio could do little wrong as they tripped Millcreek 25-0. Conneaut got off to a fast start by scoring 2 T D's in the first quarter. Millcreek, who lost their sixth game of the season, could not get their attack started. eniafz mm 7uZaz'e 7a 040: 60464 Gus Anderson, head football coach since 1929 and basketball coach from 1929 until 1947, resigned from active coaching this year. His recent illness had slowed him up considerably and his condition prompted the resignation. In the 2l years he coached, Gus did more for our school and its graduates than any other man in the community. He taught the boys who played for Millcreek to be a gentleman at all times. The boy's Welfare was first in his mind. ' His coaching record at Millcreek is one of which any coach would be proud. His football record included 129 Wins, 46 losses and 17 ties. Seven of his basketball teams Won County Cham- pionships. - Although he is resigning as coach, Gus Will continue teaching health and gym classes. Paul Goll will become head football coach, assisted by Dave Long. The members of our class can not thank him enough for all his help in the six years we have been associated with him. Millcreek, Without his coaching, will still Win games, but everyone will agree that things will not be quite the same. The Senior class takes this opportunity to Wish a swell coach and friend the best of luck. K D lst Row: R. Rowley, R. Flick, D. Gage l. Spusta, F. Caldwell, D. Green, N. Ferry. Znd Row: H. As usual, Millcreek outclassed the local county teams in winning virtually every game, but the team met its match in down-state games with Meadville and Titusville. ln league play the team beat East twice and Corry once but the most notable of its victories was a resounding upset over Academy, the section leaders at the time. Millcreek led Academy throughout the first three quarters, but in the fourth, as Was the usual fashion, they ran out of steam, letting Academy overcome a ten-point deficit to end the regulation time in a 36-36 tie. In the overtime period Academy got off to a fast start with three quick points, but Millcreek was not to be denied its well-dressed victory and promptly came through with eight points to Win 44-40. This season the team invoked a new tradition into its curriculum with the scheduling of a exhibition game in Hamilton, Ontario. This was the first time a local team had introduced the inter- national effect into basketball. Our team defeated a scrappy Holy Family quintet by the score of 62-55. Regardless of the outcome of each game, the Millcreek Trojans proved themselves worthy of title of good sportsmen and determined and spirited players. 11872 4 Zweezldl 64444 and Qgbiadn COACH . . . They won only three games throughout the season, thrilling victories over East, Fairview, and I-larborcreek. Nevertheless, the team derived a wealth of useful knowledge concerning teamwork and co-operation. Their spirit and vitality was evident in every game, and they provided many exciting moments of fine playing. ln future years these players, with a few seasons of experience and teamwork, should provide a basketball team equaling those of the past and worthy of the title of Millcreek Trojans.
