G iv, ,gui l Short Story Johnson's chin was cupped in his hands and he sat staring at the floor with a solid expression. The cell was dark except for the slender beams of light which streamed in between the steel bars The bars were cold grav and Johnson had learned to hate the morose shadows they cast into hrs cell He sat motionless on his bunk as though he were a bronze statue rn some Chicago park A black little cockroach rn the corner of the cell kept running wrld ly up and down the wall Johnson ob served rt with the interest of a per son about to take hrs last glimpse at the marvels of creation He was a well hurlt man with broad powerful shoulders and a frrm set Jaw Hrs sad gray eyes calculated the agrtat ing movements of the insect as rt dashed fanatrcally about Outside hrs cell was a long narrow corridor lined w1th cells similar to hrs own Sliding hrs long fingers through hrs tousled hair he stood erect and stretched hrs arms above hrs head Then he laborously scuffled over to the cell door and pressed hrs cheek between the cold bars From this positron he could see the large electric clock above the main gate Its stout hands told hrm rt was seyen forty frye At the other end of the long corrr dor the small channel gate clanged monotonously open and shut The hands of the prison clock had slowly approached the nine Johnson was still srttrng on the bunk but he raised hrs head when he heard foot steps echoing down the hall As a thin ray of flrckerrng light shone across hrs face one could see passing hours A few gray hairs now lrned hrs once dark temples and hrs face carried an expressron of anx re y Father Duskey ond a slender prrs on guard paused momentarily beforc hc cell block Then quietly the priest entcred the cell and sat down on thc bunk opposite Johnson For a long time they sat rn silence listening to the guards heayy heals echo down thc long corridor 'Ihen suddenly thc priest broke the silence with a soft fluent yorce I suppose you know why I c come Johnson Johnson nodded and answered in a melancholy tone. Yes, I know, Father. The prisoners forehead was per- spiring with a cold sweat and he sat rubbing his hands together in per- petual rhythm Father Duskey lard a prayer book on the bunk and calmly began pag ing through a worn Bible Then slow ly he began to read the twenty third Psalm as though he had not memor ized rt from constant repetition When he had frnally finished he picked up the prayer book and sat down next to the prisoner Do you want to pray with me son? he asked Why should I said Johnson Ive been praying all week and look what rt s got me All right son but you look like the kind of a man who could and does pray Im sorry Father sard Johnson please forgive me Im a brt upset The two dark figures knelt placing their folded hands on the hard bunk The priest began muttering hrs pray er asking the 'Vhghty Creator to for grye those of hrs flock who had gone astray Johnson spoke for aw hrle but then he bit hrs lrp so that the priest might not hear hrs choking words He was not the krnd of man to cry but he had thought of hrs lovely wife and the laughing ey es of lrttle Prrs cr a For a short moment remrnrscence of happy days of laughter and ex crtement flooded hrs dwindling mem ory But swiftly as the yrsron had come rt faded 1nto darkness again and he found himself staring at the The priest had risen and was watching Johnson with intense inter est Slowly the weary prisoner rosc to his feet Gotta cigarette he said sudden ly as though seeking to rencyy '1 con ycrsatron Sure said the priest handrng him one from a handsome srlyercasc I didnt know that men of thc order smoked I dont but I knew you d hc yyant mg a smoke Johnson lit the crgarettc and took a deep drag He held it momentarily ' . l. The priest did not answer right away but when he did he had changed the subject of conyersatron Im not said Johnson Im rn nocent Sure I know they all say that but rn my case its true The conversation was stalled once agarn and the priest sat down on the bunk Johnson walked to the cell door and began drumming his frn gers neryously on the cross bars Do you want to tell me about rt son asked the priest No said Johnson Im afraid rt s too late Ive only got a few min utes left Its never too late Johnson you know that Johnson gave a sarcastic little laugh and almost choked from the lump rn hrs throat You know something Father lrfe rs like a strange enchanting dream where the innocent suffer with the guilty What makes you think that? Well you know when one kills someone because that person has hurt and drsarrarrged one s lrfe he rs tried found gurlty and electrocuted But when certarn rndrvrduals with frnancral backing commit felonies and frauds which makes one shudder to think about they then receive praise and encouragement to pro mote their so called relrgrous and God fearing ideals Thats quite a speech Johnson you sound like a lawyer I am said the prisoner I mean I was a lawyer ll hy yyere you brought here' asked the priest as though he hfrd the right to know I told you I didnt want to talk about rt answered the prisoner You know something Father for a priest you re an awful nosey guy Do you want me to leaye No I like you Why ' asked the prrest hrs eyes smrlrng rn hrs secret way I dont know said Johnson I think its your frarrkness or some thing Are you sure you don't want to tell me about it? asked the priest again. I'm not sure that- Suddenly two uniformed prison guards appeared before the small cell block The tall thin guard slrd a key rn the lock and turned rt slowly as though he sought to cheat trm The lock gave a loud dull click and the cell door swung open Your times up Johnson sfud the guard Johnson just stood staring at the lock for a moment and then walked slowly out of hrs cell Father Duskey followed placing a steadyrng hand on hrs shoulder A guard kicked the cell door shut and rt clanged norsrly The two guards stepped automatrcally to Johnson s side and the death march had begun Johnson felt the frrm grrp of thc guards at hrs elbow and he knew there was no escape It seemed though the march would never end and yet he knew that each step brought hrm closer to death He could hear the priest softly mumbling a prayer to guide and comfort hrm on hrs Journey of darkness The prisoners rn the cells lrnrng the corridor peered out eager to catch the emotional strain on the condemned man s face Johnson looked at the priest and saw he was praying rn deep concen tration Suddenly he was fascinated by the large growth next to the priests little nose How strange he thought that this lrttle curiosity should arouse hrs interest rn the last hour of hrs lrfe He had not noticed rt rn the darkness of hrs cell but now he saw that despite the growth rt was a kind face Suddenly they turned the corner rn the corridor and entered the small room where he yyould dre The guards quickly straped hrm rn a crude yyoo den chair lined yyrth electrrcfrl at tachmcnts He felt the cold steel bowl being placed on hrs shay err head and he tried desperately to struggle free A guard rn the corner of the dingy room glanced at hrs watch and sayy that the time had arrry ed John son felt a trrrglrrrg sensatrorr rush through his bodv and rwoke startled by the rrngrrrg of the alarm clock Werner Hrnkle Twelfth Grade 9 . .
