THE KALDRO Vol. XVIII - - 1944 XD Published Annually By THE SENIOR CLASS OF M illcveels H iqlu School ERIE COUNTY, ERIE, PENNA 1 w p 9 N- 5 Q 1 tis K fi as O P Q W O P E, The Kaldron Staff of 1944, have tried to create a per- manent record of our activi- ties and classes. This isn't just the Senior's Yearbook. It is the record of every class in Millcreek High School and of every person in these classes. This year we have tried to refrain from editing a wartime yearbook but there are some things that we could not avoid. We would have liked to print a peacetime record, but as you know, that is impossible. We the Staff of '44, offer all our hopes and prayers that the day of victory will come soon and all of our classmates will come home once again. licliloriol Sloll Editor - - ----- Dick Johnston Associate Editor - - Jane Wilson Literary Editor - - - Jo Ann Kuehn Assistants - - - Laura Jean Cote, Elaine Brady Senior Class Editor - ---- Marguerite Schneider Assistants - - - Eloise Goodrich, John Baird, Neil McGahen Underclass Editor ---- Ray Foley-U.S.A.A.C. These young- men waged a war so that they might be free to hunt in the rich forests, which covered Millcreek, that their wives and children would be free from fear of attack by the enemy. Today, more battles are raging, many more young men from Millcreek are going out to fight in them. The war this time is on a larger scale and being fought in the 'tfour corners of the earth, but the cause for which our boys are fighting is still the same-freedom, their homes, and us. So it is in deep appreciation for what they are doing, that we, the graduating class of 1944, dedicate this Kaldron to Mili- creek's sons and daughters-fighting for us. ITICJ C1 QP. Once again here as schoolmates assembled We fain would lift our hearts in song, To our high school, our dear Alma Mater, Let gladness the moments prolong, We are proud of our lads and our lasses, Of honors won in days gone by. So here's a cheer for our old high school, For our old high school, our dear old high CHORUS Here's to our classes, here's to our lasses, Here's to the lads they adore. Here's to the Seniors so mighty, Juniors so flighty, Freshies and Sophomores Let mirth and gladness, banish all sadness And as the days roll by, You'll find us ready and steady, Boosting for Millcreek High. 5 new rn vm zoos mam Q -,en uf, awww fffmrfv vmuxc J, f ffm Jens, M, aw 1 2-,uc swap. , Q,-xvxzzmvrb -V Nivea .mins www' cf Qnvvzu we :rf :L WY -Ur cw . Juniors This year's Junior Class, consisting of eighty-three of Millcreek's finest, has set many glowing records at which future classes should aim. they have brought honor to their alma mater in every field they have touched. They were well represented on the football and basketball squads. Their skating parties, dances, assembly programs, and the prom have been bright spots which will always stand out in our memory of this year. CLASS OFFICERS President ........................ Now that they have learned the rules and regul 3- tions of high school life they are out to set an unrivaled example for future classes. SQVQTIH1 GPGJQ Last spring there dropped into our midst a host of new students. After we had helped them locate their homerooms, directed them to classes, and rescued them from the far corners of the boiler room, they began to find their way around alone in a week's time. Out of curiosity we checked up and found that there were one hundred and twenty-nine of these seventh graders. Their scholastic achievements have already been remarkable, considering what they are up against. As a class, they seem to be made of the substance that will bring honor to our alma mater. They were Mert Sawdey, Dave Long, Howard Godfrey, and fleetfooted Jack Nayl-or, who left during the season to play on Uncle Sam's team. Sportswriters and fans alike painted a gloomy picture for our Trojans. Neither they nor the opposing team could convince the Millcreek gridsters that they were just to green to be Champs. Coach Anderson's sadly under-rated Trojans marched their way through, over, and around veteran and new teams alike. They lost only one game, their last, to Harborcreek. Thus enabling Millcreek to drive her way into a first place tie with Lawrence Park and Harborcreek. Lettermen for the concluded season are Captain Howard Godfrey, Jim Hellman, Russ Silverthorn, Emmett Phillips, Don Swanson, Mert Sawdey, John Auld, Tom Wells, Norman Kleckner, Ken Messick, Bill McCleary, Ray Heddrick, Mike Prozan, Ray Foley, Glen Ewer, Dave Long, Jack Naylor, next year's Captain elect, Jim Sheridan, and Manager, Bill Quinn. lst-Emmett Phillips, Tom M. The Trojans also met a greater variety of teams playing: Fairview, Wattsburg, Harborcreek, Union City, Lawrence Park, Corry, Wesleyville, North East, and Albion. This schedule looked mighty good to fans who witnessed the former season's monotonous, Fairview, Girard, and West Springfield routine. The promising Trojan Cagers welcomed returning lettermen-Lloyd Johns, Jim Sheridan, Burt DeLancey, and Jim Swanson. While wishing letterman Jack Naylor could arrange a furlough to play with Millcreek, fans and Coach Anderson alike were well pleased with the returned vet- erans. Its members are elected by the faculty, judged from these standards-scholarship, leadership, service and character. Each member receives a gold medal, which he proudly wears to show that he has been elected to membership in the National Honor So- ciety. Now do you understand why it is the secret or spoken ambition of every Millcreekite to become a member of the Honor Society? Commercial The Commercial Club is an organization consisting of second year Shorthand students. It acquaints its members with the demands of the business world. The club, under the able supervision of Miss Helen Zuck, helps the members find positions that are particularly suited to their abilities. Lina Sieffert, Laura Jean Cote, and Vivian Allen were elected to the offices of President, Vice-President, and Secretary, respectively. Social functions are not highly stressed, due to war-time rationing, the only one being a Mothers' and Daughters' Tea given by Miss Zuck at her home. Deboiinq Daniel Webster has nothing on us! We have many speakers who now argue for world union instead of states union. And who are these speak- ers? Millcreek's Debating Club, naturally. They may not be able to argue the devil out of a soul, but when it comes to this year's question, should the League of Nations be Reinstalled? They're whizzes. Many other tasks were performed by our club which has realized the great need for its help, especially during these times. BGYIJ Da-da, bang-bang, ta-ta, teedle-di-ouch!!! Can't you hear our band sending? This, as printed above, happens only during practice period, for our band always makes a good showing in public. At the football games they performed during the half-even on a muddy field, as was often the case. They helped get us in a peppy mood at the major pep meetings. Our band is truly an important extra curricular activity. Cheerleaders Did I hear you say, 'Who are those five peppy, good looking students all dressed in blue and white ?' Are you kidding? Surely everyone knows the Millcreek Cheerleaders. Why, where have you been? They lead us in cheering at every game, rain or shine, and they hold pep rallies to cheer our boys on to victory, and-and--they step up our school spirit im- mensely. What's that you said? Oh!
