TI-IE KALDRON VOL. XVII f f 1943 PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY The Senior Class of Millcreek High School ERIE COUNTY ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA Q as ' a 4fv4 isxwiaai , wg: ffgffw f , if F ovewovd ln editing this seventeenth edition of the Kaldron we, the Kaldron Staff ol 1943, have attempted not only to create a permanent record of our Final year at Millcreelc l-ligh School, but also to emphasize the fact that we spent our Final year in a country which still maintains that Freedom should be the basis of its government. You will Find that each division of this book not only forms a part of that permanent record, but also brings out some one detail of that freedom we enjoy. Today some of those details may not be entirely truthful. ln peace times we don't realize we have these many assets to our way of living, but now when some of them are temporarily, but necessarily talcen from us, we miss them. Perhaps this really should have been a peacetime yearboolc. ll so, let's all worlc just that much harder to bring it baclc into style again. ,Q X, X . i la Wy O QQ Dea'z'cated to ROY KORREL with sincere gratitude for his untiring efforts and wise counsel in helping our graduating class through all the years of our association. The school spirit displayed by the l:reshies gives promise of future greatness. EIGHTH GRADE This year's enrollment in the eighth grade is 143 ambitious and energetic boys and girls. They are looking forward eagerly to their Freshman year. Their few activities for the year included participation in intercollegiate basket- ball and the presentation of enjoyable assembly programs. SEVENTH GRADE They were perfect strangers when they first came to Millcreelcs halls but under the supervision and guidance of Mr. Korrell, Miss Cook, Miss Luke, and Miss Mac- Kenzie, they lost their timidity and are now as much a part of our high school as any of the other classes. Determined to uphold the standards set by other classes who started out as seventh graders, this class of 'l2'l students has been successful in their activities and curriculum. It is one of the most outstand- ing organizations in the schai. With the opening of the school this year, work was be- gun by Jean Brown, President, and her capable assistants, Doris Love, Vice President, Ar- lene Fletcher, Treasurerg and Helen Arnold, Secretary. But due to many other duties, Jean was forced to resign and Marian LeVesque was appointed by the Cabinet to take her place for the remaining part of the year. The Girl Reserves were able to send two representatives to the Winter Conference, and to purchase a school flag, which was hung in the auditorium. We feel that this organiza- tion will be a great success in the future and will live up to the standards set by previous years. i PRESS CLUB NBuy a Hubn is a familiar cry heard every two weeks at Mill- creek. It was not until 1937 that the present school paper was published here, but since then, through the creditable efforts of the Press Club, the WHubW has made great progress. Due to war conditions, this year in many places, school pa- pers have had to discontinue. Millcreek has been very fortu- nate in that it has had to cut only one page. Since Bob Olson, the former editor, took a full-time war job in addition to his school work, the nHubN was taken over by Mary Alice Buseck in the middle of the year. The NHubH Staff is under the capable direction of Miss Joan Breault. FEA. The Future Farmers of America or HF.F.A.,N as it is commonly known, is the national organ- ization of, by, and for boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools un- der the provision of the Na- tional Vocational Education Act. As an integral part of the program of vocational education in agriculture in the public school system of America, the F.F.A. has become well known in recent years. No national stu- dent organization enjoys great- er freedom of self-government under adult counsel and gui- dance than Future Farmers of America. Organized in November of 1928, it has served to mo- tivate and vitalize the system- atic instruction offered to students of vocational agricul- ture, and to provide further training in farmer citizenship. The band, the larger ol the two, has grown rapidly during the last few years and has gained prominence among the school bands of Erie County. The orchestra, although much smaller, was established many years before the band and was one of the first musical organizations promoted by the l'ligh School. Many of the members of both groups have been given the opportunity ol playing in the All County Band and Orchestra which is organized each -spring. This year the chorus, due to its size has been divided into two sections. The honor ol belonging to theft Capella was granted to a few members of both choruses, Two quartets were formed by the Seniors and although all of the other musical organizations were somewhat restricted due to rationing, these students were able to appear on several different occasions. Although they have had various teachers during the past year the musical groups are still very well organized. They are now under the very able direction of Mrs- Byers. Q Freedom in carrying o n friendly competition S ports The Millcreelc Trojans started the football season not to well fixed with veterans, but well stoclced with eager first year material. Returning lettermen from last year's championship squad were Walt Taylor and Red Tousey, co-captains, Ray Winslow, Jaclc Naylor, Ray Lapensz, and Elmer Scholtz. As the season wore on, Millcreelc fans decided that they would have to wait until a future year for another championship team lilce the one of '40-'4'l. All tolled Millcreelc wound up in third place with four wins, two ties, and two defeats. Return- ing lettermen for next year's team include Jaclc Naylor, Dave Long, Mert Sawdey, and Howard Godfrey. Due to the gasoline shortage the County Basketball League was somewhat streamlined this year. That is the sixteen teams in the county were divided into four sections. Millcreelc was represented in section one along with West Springfield, Fairview, and Girard. With the following lettermen-Winslow, Spangler, and Al- stadt- Gus Anderson coached the team through nine victories against three defeats and to the championship of section one, by defeating West Springfield by a 39-Q9 margin on our home court. A blow was dealt earlier this year when John Alstadt, regular forward, joined the Navy. The returning lettermen for next year are Jaclc Naylor, Lloyd Johns, Jim Sheri- dan, Jim Swanson, and Burt Del.ancey, When football, basketball, and class lsaslcetball are included a large percentage of Nlillcreelcs boys have participated in the field of sports. CHOO X f 0 2 P f k Senior Class Play The Senior Class presented its annual play, entitled HEver Since Eve, on November 6, 1942. The play, a comedy in three acts by Florence Ryerson and Colin Clements, and published by the Samuel French Company, was a smash hit. The story centered about a boy ol seventeen whose name was Johnny Clover. He was a studious boy who took lile rather seriously. Johnny's pet peeves were his newspaper ollice, which his mother had redecorated to loolc like his old nursery, and his childhood playmate, Susan Blake. She was just lilteen and at the mischievous stage. Johnny's lriend, Spud, also had a problem in his sister, Betsy, who was a very talkative little girl who always made hersell a part ol every situation. Lucybelle, a southern girl, entered the picture and caused a conllict in the love-life ol Johnny and Spud. As the play progressed, things arranged themselves so the play ended happily lor all concerned. The cast included the lollowing: Mrs. Clover ...,.,......,... Life is queer, with its twists and turns And many a failure turns about, When he might have won if he'd stuck it out. Success is failure turned inside out. You never can tell how close you are- It may be near when it seems far. So stick and fight when hardest hit- It's when things seem worst, That you mustn't QUIT. -Bison News R. A. P.
