FT F7 uma D530 VOLUME I6 'Ir PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF MILLCREEK HIGH SCHOOL ERIE COUNTY ERIE PENNSYLVANIA N appreeiation for laiy .roand advice, fine personalizjf, and for never being too bay to lend a helping band daring oar association with him at Millcreek, we Jincereb' dedicate tlnix :ixteentla edition to MR. JOHN A. SHEPLEY FOREWORD N editing this sixteenth edition we, the KALDRON Stag of 1941, have endeavored to highlight the final year on our road to graduation. We have attempted to create a permanent record that can be used in the years to come for refreshing in our minds the memories of the many pleasures we enjoyed in the fleeting year of our matriculation. In so emphasizing our final year we hope to convey to those who will follovv in our footsteps the advantages in making use of the opportunities afforded in high school. 194i,KALDRoN On Tzmciay, September 2, IQ4I we did it again . . . for the twelfth and last time, we came back to school after a wonderful vacation. After getting used to our new seats and singing out Seniors in the school song, we elected ofiicers. They are as follows: President, Bill Krayerg Vice President, Dorothy Andersong Secretary, Lois Loveg Treasurer, Bill McCamey. Our first official act in the field of entertainment was the Halloween dance which was followed by the Senior Play. Then there was the Cake and Ice Cream that we had at our Christmas Party, remember? The month ofjanuary went unheralded except for those mid- term tests. Unheralded, did we say? Remember the glorious success of the sleighride we didn't have? We certainly made up for it by the Senior Dance. . . the rythm of the Silver Serenaders will never be forgotten. Finally there was that glorious day in May when they said we could go home . , . and not bother to return next Fall. KALDR N1'fI947- A-rf ,jr N 45' 1'- F . Most schools of our size do not have this asset. The Cafeteria is under the directorship of Mr. and Mrs. Freeburg, with Mrs. McCamey, Mrs. Hosbach, Mrs. Rice and Miss Mills as their aids. Millcreek students have been dining in this Cafeteria daily, and not once has this capable group failed to prepare the daily variety of foods. Our Cafeteria opens a few days after the beginning of school, and continues in operation until two or three days before the close of the second term. We are also indebted to our bus drivers. This group braves the whims of the elements every year, and very seldom do the students of Millcreek fail to arrive at school because the buses couldn't get through. Our bus drivers are called upon to do many things. Every organization in the school depends upon this group for transportation to various activities. The bus drivers, namely: Mr. Waidley, Mr. Foht, Mr. Gill, Mr. Ripley, and Mr. Steinford, are under the supervision of Mr. Cook. We regret that our janitors, Pop Richardson and Mrs. Smith, were not present to have their pictures taken, however, we are familiar with the work of our janitors, and know how faithful they have been in doing their duties. 18 ,,,1941,.KALDRON KALDRON STAFF .fpan.mrJ.' This play, a Philip Barry comedy, centered about the efforts of Nancy Blake to elevate Richard Winslow from the lowly position that he occupied in his family. Through a slight technicality in the late Mr. Winslow's will, Richard became the legal owner of all of his family's money and real estate. Out of pure generosity Richard then created a trust fund for his family and the play ended with a happy future in store for Richard, Nancy, and the entire family. Roll B CLASS HISTORIES JUNIORS We, the Juniors, have laid the stepping stones of our individual futures through our three years of high school. ln our class there has been no abatement in our desire for achievement. We may, at some time or other, have looked upon life as a dark, monotonous state of being, but as we mature, we adopt a brighter outlook. With courage in our hearts and a plucky attitude for accomplishment we look forward to the forthcoming years of our lives. SOPHOMORES In September of 1941 there entered into the Senior High a group of Sophomores, comprised of boys and girls of Millcreek and the outlying districts. Our class has contributed members to the football and basketball teams, the chorus, orchestra and band, and to the various clubs. Our officers are: LaVern Yochim, presidentg Richard Porsch, vice president, Jack McCullough, secretary, and Yvonne Smith, treasurer. FRESHMEN From such well-known schools as Tracy, Lakewood, Kearsarge, and Belle Valley came our group of sturdy young people to join this one big center as Freshmen. May the hunger for knowledge quicken our steps as time marches on, to prepare us for our future education and life as future citizens of our country. EIGHTH GRADE When we became the eighth graders of Millcreek in the fall of 1941, we were no longer obscure beings. Then we were recognized by our upper classmates as a true portion of the student body of our beloved school. Since we are now definitely a part of Millcreek we expect to have a large represen- tation in the sports, scholastic and social activities of our school in the future. SEVENTH GRADE After coming here from Lakewood, Tracy, and Montclair Schools, we have found Millcreek High School a wonderful place. After wandering into wrong classrooms and bumping into people for about two weeks, we finally found our place in this large building and are happy to have the opportunity to remain here through our high school years. These boys, plus Frank Thayer and Walter Taylor were groomed by Gus Anderson into a smooth offensive and a tight defensive combine. After starting the season with two heartbreaking defeats, the boys then hit their stride and won seventeen straight contests in league competition, Ending the League season, tied with Lawrence Park, they entered the play-offs and defeated Wesleyville and Lawrence Park to win the championship. KALDRONr1941,,,,, H all Patrol The Hall Patrol was organized in 1938 by Mr. Crandall. Under his direction this club has become an important organization in Millcreek High School. The Hall Patrol consists of boys from the eighth to the twelfth grades who know the rules and regulations of the school perfectly. The black arrowed lines in the halls are to aid the student body and do away with unnecessary confusion. Students are required to keep to the right and to keep the lines moving. V The Hall Patrol does not have any important social activities, but the members receive awards at the end of the school year. Claorzu The Millcreek High School Chorus, under the capable direction of Mr. Crandall, was very active this year. It had a membership of nearly one hundred students. On December IQ., the Chorus participated in a radio program presented by the Tuberculosis Association, over Station W.L.E.U., and on December 15, sang Christ- mas music over the Public Address System in Erie. A Christmas concert was also presented in the school. In March, a program was given at Wesleyville High School. Shortly after this the Chorus lost its eilicient director, who had been at Millcreek for the past eleven years. After his departure the organization was taken over by another excellent director- Miss Strickler, who worked very hard to get it under way again. The Chorus entered the Spring Festival, held in the college building at Edinboro, May Sth and 9th. Several numbers were presented. This organization has already established a fine record for Millcreek High School. Commercial Club The Commerical Club was organized in the Fall of 1939 under the sponsorship of Miss Zuck. Since it was started it has become one of the important clubs of Millcreek. The purpose of the Commercial Club is to develop its members into all-around personalities and to help them become good secretaries. It also teaches them how to apply for a position. The club sponsors teas, book reviews, clean-up campaigns, and English campaigns. There are twelve members in the club. The ofhcers are: President, Dorothy Detisch, Vice President, Marian Kanis, Secretary, Evelyn Weber. National Honor Society For the last eight years fifteen percent of each graduating class from Millcreek High School have been chosen to receive the highest honor that can be given a high school student-membership in the National Honor Society. Now nearly one hundred Millcreek alumni wear the official emblem of the National Honor Society-a flaming torch mounted upon a keystone. Four letters-C, S, L, and Siaround the base of the design, symbolize the four requirements for membership . . . Character, Scholar- ship, Leadership, and Service. Ten percent of each senior class and five percent of each junior class are elected by the faculty at the close of each school year, but the students' names remain on the roll only as long as they maintain high standards. Those elected from the Junior Class of the school year 1940-1941 were as follows: Dorothy Anderson, Donald Kohl, Betty Roesch, Helen Waidley and Richard Kidder. 61 .,41,KALDRoN Student Council ' The Student Council, with Mr. Crandall as faculty advisor, has been active since the Fall of I938. There is at least one delegate from each of the home-rooms in this organization. The following ofhcers were elected from the members of last year's Student Council: Jean Brown, President, Roy Stadler, Vice President, and Ruth McDonald, Secretary. The Council has maintained the Hall Patrol and Monitor systems again this year. It has also organized campaigns for cleanliness, started the Girl Reserves, and ac- complished many other things to benefit the school. The Student Council represents the student body in the affairs of the school. Orelaemfu This year our Orchestra, under the fine direction of Mr. Howard Forbes, continued its musical career as in previous years. A new addition has been made to the Orchestra in the form of a beginning or- chestra. By joining this beginners group with our regular organization, Millcreek can expect great things from its Orchestra next year. The members of the Orchestra took several trips to other schools and several of its musicians were selected to participate in the Festival Orchestra at Corry, Penn- sylvania, in january. Girl Referees This year the juniors and seniors had the honor of being the charter members of the Millcreek Girl Reserves. The Girl Reserves was organized in 197.5 with the purpose of preparing the young woman of America to take her place as a Christian citizen in her home, her school, her church, and her community. During the Year, the Girl Reserves participate in activities which, they believe, help to build fine characters. This year the girls enjoyed lectures, tureen suppers at the Y.W.C.A., knitting for the soldiers, bowling, sleigh rides, dances, mother and daughter teas, and get- together parties. Prefs Club The Press Club is one of the most active clubs in Millcreek. lt was formed in 1937 by Emily Zuck, Virginia Rye, and Elwin Fuller, and has improved with the years in greatness and number. Mr. Shepley is the faculty advisor for this organization, and in I94O-41 he was aided by Mr. Korrell. The club is made up of students who publish the MILLCREEK HUB and TROJANAIRE. They also print tickets and basketball schedules at various times during the year. In 1941 the HUB won first place in the Quill and Scroll contest, which is nation- wide judging of high school publications. The previous two years it took second place. 62. KALDRON,194i Hall Moniiorf The Hall Monitor system was organized in the school year of 1939-40 under the capable supervision of Mr. Crandall. He continued to supervise it until this year, when Mr. LeMasters was selected as faculty advisor for this organization. At the present time it is under the direction of Mr. Kuhl, who took Mr. LeMaster's place. Different monitors are stationed at various intervals in the halls each period of the day. It is their duty to see that every pupil passing through the hall has a permit signed by a faculty member stating where the pupil came from and where he is going. They must then write his name on a form that is provided. This method eliminates unnecessary loitering and confusion in the halls. The Hall Monitor system has proved very successful in the past and will be a success in the future, due to the co-operation of the pupils and the faculty members. F. EA The F. F. A. CFuture Farmers of AmericaD is a nationwide organization. It was formed by the Vocational Agriculture boys of America. The purpose of this organization is to give boys vocational guidance as well as a social and recreational center. Each summer the club enjoys a trip to Pennsylvania State College and each winter a number of candidates are sent to the State Farm Show in Harrisburg. Our own F, F. A. boys, under the direction of Mr. Payne, also boasted a fine basket- ball team this year. This year's officers are: President, Calvin Loveg Vice President, Raymond Winslow, Secretary, Donald Waldemarson, Treasurer, Robert Root, Reporter, Clifford Hammer. Library Club The Millcreek High School Library Club was first organized in 1936 by Miss Christine Messerly. In the five years of its existence this club has become one of the largest in Millcreek. There are twenty regular members whose aims are to maintain and improve the condition of the library. This year, under the able guidance of the new Librarian, Mrs. Sampson, the club has accomplished much. One of the most important events of the year was the celebration of Book Week. Many posters, book jackets, and book plates were exhibited in the library which expressed the enthusiasm of the student body. Those who are in the Library Club have gold pins which signify their membership in the organization. The officers of the club are as follows: President, Madelyn Fleming, Vice President, Jean Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer, Mildred Weaver, Historian, Vivian Allen. The Bama' The Band, under the direction of Mr. Howard Forbes, is composed of forty-three members which is an increase of eleven over last year's membership. During the school year the band played for football games and assembly programs. Before the Christmas vacation they went to Harborcreek and played for the school assembly. In the spring, Millcreek and Lawrence Park combined their bands to give a large concert for both schools. We are proud to say that our school was represented by Naomi Gill, Doris Pongratz, Marion LeVesque, Lucy Mae Lapple, Betty Roesch, Elaine Deininger, Phyllis Horth, Ann DeLancey, John Baird, Dell Lott, Clifford Hammer, Kenneth Shores, Helen Waidley, Laurine Engel, Betty Barringer, Lois Love, Jean Johnson, Ernest Grames, Bernard Skapura and Glenn Ewer, in the All-County Chorus. The Band also had several represented in the All-District Band. 63 .,4.,KALDRo Red Cram The Junior Red Cross has been organized for many years in Millcreek High School. This year the enrollment is the largest in its history, and the organization is progress- ing rapidly under the capable direction of Miss Fry. This year the Red Cross Council members elected the following oflicers: President, Cecilia Kneidinger, Vice President, Harold Morgan, Secretary, Betty Sopp, Treasurer, Shirley Miller. The aim of the Junior Red Cross is to give aid whenever and Wherever possible throughout the year. Each holiday it sends favors to hospitals and other institutions. This organization hopes to raise the necessary funds to send a delegate to Wash- ington, D.C., in the spring. In 1939 Millcreek was represented by Madeline Weaver, and in 1940 by Janet Parson. Cheer Leemlerf ln the past years, Millcreek High School has selected different students to lead sport fans in the cheering at football and basketball games. From past years we remember Phyllis Anthony '39, Jim Kline '39, Dick Johnson '39- '4o, and Don Bartlet '4o. This year, under the direction of Mrs. Weislogel, our experienced and efiicient cheer leaders, Betty Roesch, Laurine Engel, and jack Cronin, were very successful in gaining the support of both student and adult spectators. Millcreek's cheerleading organization has added much to the spirit and interest in its school sports. Debate Club With Lettermen Robert Wells, Donald Hirsch, and Frank Carter returning, Mill- creek had the nucleus needed to form another Hne debating team. Again this year, our team debated in the Lake Erie Debating League. Among the schools included in this league are: Strong Vincent, Erie East, Academy, North East, Girard, Harbor- creek, Albion, Wesleyville, Lawrence Park, and Millcreek. The question for I94Im47. was: Resolved, that every able-bodied male citizen in the United States should have one year of full-time military training before attaining the present draft age. The afiirmative team consisted of Lois Love, Donald Hirsch, Patricia Pfenning and Jean Root, with Miss Pollock as their advisor. The negative team consisted of Richard Kidder, Nancy Norton, Robert Wellsg and alternate Betty Barringer, with Miss O'DonnelI as their advisor. The Debate Finals were held on April 18th at Allegheny College. 64 1 94KALDRON Emma mp broth KALDRON,.1941 Firclfx MA-MADE BREAD Buy the Beer Bert Wifhef to MILIJCREEK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS When in Downtown Erie oifit the .rtore which carriex 4 complete line of HOSIERY LINGERIE SPORTSWEAR tbatyou looe A N S O N S ' 918 STATE STREET ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA Complimentf of AMERICAN STERILIZER COMPANY Complimenn of E M L I N G ' S Clennerf and Dyerf 811 WEST 2.6T1-I STREET, ERIE, PA.
