However, some. of us have even closer bonds: and have been together since our first: days of kindergarten. We know that itis impossible to keep all of the friendships but we hope that some of them will remain strong and help us to remember our past tri- umphs and failures. Sports. will certainly be a strong memory, not only for those who excelled and made us proud, but also for the strong spirit that. it gave to the entire student body. Also, band, chorus, the drama club, the honor society, and the numerous other clubs and. organi- zations have served as a bond for all class members. V. have numerous: hopes. and aspirations and certainly many fears as we leave our secure ‘nest, but’ we are‘eager and determined to succeed. We hope that we choose our careers wisely and that we will. continue to bring. honor and praise to our high school and our town..So as we grasp tightly onto our many fond memories of our times at Millbury Memorial High School, we have even more to look forward.to in the future where our possibilities. are endless: and where our dreams. can become rea- lities with a little bit of hard work. We had one of the best — Mrs. Fran Dupont. Disregard- ing the fact that she was al- ready heavily involved with Student Council, teaching, and using her computer skills to help run the school, she bravely vol- unteered to take on one more challenge, perhaps her greatest: being advisor to the Class of 1989. A gra- duate of Worcester State College with a Master’s Degree from WPI, she marks her twentieth year at Millbury High School in 1989. Throughout our four years at MHS, she has helped us to pull off near miracles when we needed her most. Her hard work and endless energy have helped us through many rough times. We will have many fond memories of the good times we had, and of her bouyant personality. It is because of this that we, the class of 1989, wish to extend our warmest “thank you” and our best wishes to Mrs. Du- pont, someone who truly cares. Head Mrs. Joan Lufkin Business A NEW ASSET g TO MHS s. Gail Fairbanks, a graduate of Framingham State College, has been at Millbury High School as an art teacher for three years. A very talented teacher, she gained her Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art, with a minor in Education. Ms. Fairbanks, however, has proven to be more than a teacher of art here at MHS. In her first year, she ventured to take on the great responsibility of the Class of 1989’s co-advisor. She showed how much she wanted to become involved with the students. Her care and devotion was evident from the beginning, and we, as the Class of 1989, would like to extend a warm “thank you” to Ms. Fairbanks for all of her work at Millbury Memori- al High School. yt Mr. Hudson Matson Physical Education Mr. Richard McGrail Special Education Mr. Thomas Mongeon Librarian Mr. Frank Morrill Social Studies Dept. THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mr. Chester Hanratty — Chairman Mr.Edward Wilczynski — Vice-Chairman Mr. Alan Tuttle Mr. Bruce Pease Mrs. Jane Pojani Although these five com- munity members may not be well-known by the stu- dents here at MHS, they have played an integral part in our high school life. The school committee set the policies by which our very existence here at MHS was governed. In our time here, we saw them in- stitute a new drug policy, increase graduation re- quirements, work hard to change academic require- ments and structure for the better, and give us a year with quite a few half- days (for the school evalua- tion). They have worked diligently with Dr. Sylvia, Dre vlroughton, Mrs: Pierce, and the adminis- tration and staff of each school to improve the at- mosphere and the educa- tion received in the Mill- bury Public Schools, and will continue to do so in the future. As part of our final chapter here at MHS, the senior class would like to extend our heartfelt grati- tude and appreciation to the school committee for making our four years here at MHS ones filled with fun and good times. This year, however, we have seen one team which has been labeled as losers. But the fact of the matter is that, in many people’s eyes, these group of young men are really win- ners — I am speaking of the Millbury Football Team. It is one thing to show up to practice day after day and to games week after week when you boast a winning record. But it takes a bunch of kids with guts to show up to prac- tice every day and to games every week just to get beat by a rather large score. And this is just what these group of young men have — guts. They could have gone out for another team. They could have quit. They could have dropped the program en- tirely. But this group of kids, along with their classy coach, Don Four- acre, stuck it out to the very end. A salute to a team of win- ners! Grafton W. Boylston North Uxbridge Bay Path Oxford H. The offensive attack was spearheaded by senior Brian Novak, junior Mark Anderson and Jim Wise, and sophomore Eric Nielson. With less than one minute to go Kathy Ayotte scored ona penalty shot, and once again Millbury won a game that they were ex- pected to lose. One area where the class of 1989 girls have shown great participation is basketball. Nine of the eleven players on the 1988-1989 team were seniors. Not all of whom played but did keep up the spirit and feeling needed to pull a team to- gether. The dedication and commitment of sen- ior captains Beth Krum- siek and Kathy Combs have kept the team com- ing back with enthusiam for four years. The return of Nancy AGina Carenzo Sullivan and the strong play and scoring ability of Wendy Stead also greatly contributed to the wins. A few high- lights of the last season include Gina Carenzo fourteen points (which led to the win) against David Prouty. Beth had sixteen points against Uxbridge. Kathy played steadily throughout the season and is the only player who has played four years. Recognition must be given to those who returned for their senior year knowing that their playing time would remain limited. They are Tamara Hoel, IDracy Williams, Heather Murray, Katie Hedlund. However, in particular, the entire staff would like to thank Mr. Gene Genese, who guided all of our work and helped us achieve the best possible 1989 Millbury Memorial High School Year- book. It is something that everyone will treasure as they look back on their high school years with memories that arouse both laughter and tears. A special thanks to John Carrier, our yearbook representative from Herff Jones. Without his patience and guidance along with the aid of Mr. Genese our yearbook “make over” would not have been possible. The 1989 yearbook staff would like to extend our best wishes to next year’s staff. Under the direction of Mr. Murray and Mr. Sutphen, the club has recruited nearly 70 students. Some of the club members had never been on skis until this year but by the end of the year had become quite proficient on the slopes. In addition to a 6 week after-school ski program on Wednesdays at Wachusett Mountain, the club sponsored 3 day trips to skiing areas in Vermont and New Hampshire. These included trips to Mount Snow, Okemo Mountain, and Waterville Valley. Many hours were cy and safety precautions exhibited by club members. Supporting the activities of the club were proceeds derived through several school dances and a candy sale. The en- thusiasm, cooperation, and exemplary behavior by students at all ski club ac- tivities was nothing short of fantastic ac- cording to both Mr. Murray and Mr. Sut- phen. Freshman year’s Joseph and the Amaz- ing Technicolor Dreamcoat was a Bibli- cal musical which was enjoyed by both the cast and the audience. The Worst High School Play in the World was the wackiest play during our days as sopho- mores. Junior year’s Lizzie Borden of Fall River was a murder mystery drama, and was received very well by the audi- ence. This year’s production, Cinderella Meets the Wolfman was the craziest yet! This howlingly funny musical spoof took place on March 10 and 11, 1989. Seniors Gabe Lacouture and Melissa Haglund were Prince Vladimir and Cinderella, re- spectively. Other fine performances were seen in Mrs. Shrub, Sharyn Kuusisaari, and her wicked stepdaughters, Ivy and Oleander played by Debbie Monahan and Kathy Sikes. Of course, we’ll never forget Paula Pond, played by a true Hol- lywood star (rumor has it!). Good Luck to the drama club in the future. CRAFTS CLUB OFFICERS: C. DiGiulio — President S. IT WAS THE FIRST YEAR THAT THE NEW SCHOOL CHANGE ALLOWED THE EIGHTH GRADE TO ALSO MOVE UP. BECAUSE OF THIS FORTU- NATE CHANGE, WE WEREN’T THE YOUNGEST, AND COULD THEREFORE VENTURE TO EX- PLORE OUR NEW SURROUNDINGS WITHOUT FEAR. OUR FIRST BIG DECISION WAS FOR CLASS OFFICERS. THOSE CHOSEN, AND THOSE TO BE KEPT IN OFFICE FOR THE NEXT 2 YEARS WERE: PRESIDENT WENDY STEAD, VICE PRESIDENT MICHAEL TIFT, SECRETARY TAMMY HOEL AND TREASURER CINDY WADE. THE FIRST FEW MONTHS WERE ROUGH; NO- BODY WOULD ADVISE THE NEW FRESHMEN. WINTER CARNIVAL, HOWEVER, MARKED THE BEGINNING OF UNITY OF OUR CLASS. MRS. DU- PONT AND MRS. CROSS TOOK THE VAST RE- SPONSIBILITY OF MOLDING AND GUIDING US THROUGH OUR FOUR YEARS. OUR SONG, “THE YEAR OF THE FRESHMEN,” SHOWED THE HIGH SCHOOL WE WERE PREPARED TO FIGHT FOR A PLACE IN ITS SMALL SOCIETY. DURING THIS SAME YEAR, BRIAN PARATH LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR FUTURE BASKETBALL PLAYERS BY LEADING US THROUGH THE DIS- TRICTS UP TO THESTATE WHERE WE LOST BY 2 POINTS TO EAST BOSTON. ALL IN ALL, THE FRESHMAN CLASS GAINED AN IDEA OF WHAT WAS TO BE EXPECTED OF THEM AND WHAT THEY COULD EXPECT FROM MILLBURY HIGH SCHOOL. THE SUMMER PASSED QUICKLY AND WE EN- TERED ONCE AGAIN, THIS TIME AS SOPHO- MORES. IT WAS THE YEAR 1986 AND WE WERE CONTINUING TO BUILD UP OUR TREASURY FOR THE FUTURE EVENTS. IT STARTED 102 FRESHMAN YEAR WITH TOWEL SALES AND PROSPERED SOPHOMORE YEAR WITH JEWEL- RY SALES. WE HAD EARNED A PLACE IN THE HISTORY OF MHS AND WERE PROUD TO WEAR OUR NEW CLASS RINGS. BUT WE STILL WERE STRIVING TO BECOME UPPERCLASSMEN. OUR ATHLETIC ABILITIES WERE MANIFESTED BY WINTER CARNIVAL AND THE GROWING SPORTS TEAMS. MANY NEW ADDITIONS TO OUR CLASS OCCURRED DURING THIS YEAR. HOME ROOM 22, FOR EXAMPLE, WORE OUT NOT ONE, BUT TWO TEACHERS, MISS DEFEU- DIS AND MRS. PAGE. MRS. CROSS, OUR CO-AD- VISOR, ALSO LEFT TO HAVE A BABY. IN HER ABSENCE, WE WERE FORTUNATE TO COME TO KNOW MISS FAIRBANKS, OUR NEW CO-ADVI- SOR. THIS CONCLUDED OUR SOPHOMORE YEAR. WE ALL RETURNED IN 1987, A FEW INCHES TALLER AND A BIT MORE PROUD OF OUR NEW IMAGE. WE WERE THE JUNIOR CLASS. HOME- ROOM 22 WAS NOW UNDER THE CONTROL OF MRS. BOIVIN. IN CONTINUATION OF OUR FUND RAISING WE SOLD CHEESE TO PREPARE FOR THE MANY EXPENSES OF THE NEXT TWO YEARS. THE FIRST OF WHICH WAS OUR JU- NIOR PROM. REMEMBERED BY THE THEME OF “A NIGHT IN HEAVEN” IT WAS HELD AT THE HOLY CROSS HOGAN CENTER ON MAY 20, 1988. DURING THIS MEMORABLE EVENT, KATIE HEDLUND WAS PRONOUNCED PROM QUEEN, AND PERRY CONTE PROVIDED THE CLASS WITH OUR SONG, “IS THIS LOVE.” IT WAS DUR- ING THIS YEAR, ALSO, THAT MOST OF THOSE ATHLETICALLY INCLINED MEMBERS WERE SELECTED TO BE PART OF THE VARSITY SPORTS TEAMS. BOB AYOTTE, WITH THE HELP OF SUCH BOYS AS JOHN WELCOM, KEN- NY WHITE, AND RYAN ROACH, HELPED THE BOYS SOCCER TEAM REACH AN 18 TO 1 SCORE, AND PLAY IN THE DISTRICT FINALS. THE GIRLS SOCCER TEAM ALSO CAME VERY CLOSE TO ENTERING THE DISTRICTS. THE BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM SHOWED GREAT ACHIEVEMENT BY WINNING THE CLARK TOURNAMENT. FINALLY, THE GIRLS’ BASKET- BALL TEAM MADE IT TO THE DISTRICTS. IT WAS CERTAINLY A WELL PLAYED YEAR BY ALL ATHLETES. THROUGHOUT OUR JUNIOR YEAR, ALSO, WE SHOWED MHS WE WERE MORE THAN JUST JOCKS. WE EXCELLED ACA- DEMICALLY AND THIS WAS EVIDENT WHEN THE U.S. HONORS HISTORY CLASS PARTICI- PATED IN AND WON THE CONSTITUTIONAL COMPETITION AND WENT ON TO WASHING- TON TO THE FINALS. THIS, ALONG WITH THE ATHLETIC ABILITY CONTRIBUTED TO THE RESPECT THAT WE ATTAINED FROM OUR FEL- LOW CLASSMATES AND COMMUNITY AT MHS. WE BEGAN OUR FOURTH YEAR WITH GREAT ANTICIPATION FOR THE FUTURE. MANY OF US HAD BEGUN THE SEARCH FOR THE APPROPRI- ATE COLLEGE TO ATTEND. BUT WHILE THINKING OF HIGHER EDUCATION, WE STRUGGLED THROUGH THE ACADEMICS, ATH- LETICS, AND EXCITING EVENTS OF OUR SEN- IOR CLASS. OUR NEW OFFICERS WERE: PRESI- DENT MATT FITZPATRICK, VICK PRESIDENT MELISSA HAGLUND, SECRETARY TAMMY HOEL, AND TREASURER CINDY WADE. WE STARTED OFF BY SELLING CHRISTMAS ORNA- MENTS AND MAGNETS WHICH, ALONG WITH THE OPPORTUNITY CLUB WOULD ALLOW FOR US TO HOLD SENIOR ACTIVITIES. THE SEARCH FOR A YEARBOOK STAFF BEGAN. THE LEAD- ING CREW CONSISTED OF MELISSA PHELAN, ARLENE MATTRICK, AND MAXINE DUPRE. WHILE THE YEARBOOK WAS WELL ON ITS WAY, SO WERE THE SENIOR SEMI FORMAL AND CLASS TRIP PLANS. IN THE MEANTIME, WE ENJOYED AN EXCITING AND CHALLENG- ING WINTER CARNIVAL. ALTHOUGH OUR CHANCE TO WIN WAS DEFEATED BY BOBBY’S KIDS, OUR CLASS SONG, “HOLD ON TO THE TIMES,” BROUGHT OUT THE EMOTIONS OF THE FACULTY, PEERS, AND THE ENTIRE CLASS OF 1989. NEXT ON THE AGENDA WAS TO DEFEAT THE MOST PREVALENT DISEASE IN HIGH SCHOOL — SENIORITIS! THE SENIOR EVENTS, HOWEVER, CURED THIS PROBLEM. AT THE SHERATON STURBRIDGE ON APRIL 15, 1989, WE HELD OUR SENIOR SEMI FORMAL. FEW ATTENDED BUT A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. THE FRANK DAVIS RESORT IN CON- NECTICUT HOSTED OUR CLASS TRIP ON MAY 22. WE WERE ABLE TO SHOW CLASS SPIRIT, STRENGTH, AND UNITY BY WINNING ALL EVENTS; EXCEPT FOR THE DANCE COMPETI- TION, WHICH WE CAME VERY CLOSE TO WIN- NING. ALL SUNBURNT, WE RETURNED TO MILLBURY TO PREPARE FOR OUR SENIOR SUP- PER TO BE HELD THE FOLLOWING WEDNES- DAY. AND SO HERE WE ARE, JUNE 2ND, OUR CLASS DAY. HERE WE SIT, JUST AS WE DID IN THE FRESHMAN BLEACHERS FOUR YEARS AGO. AS WE ENTER THE NEXT PHASE OF LIFE, LET US JUST HOLD ON TO THE MEMORIES OF HIGH SCHOOL AND LOOK TO THE FUTURE WHICH LIES AHEAD OF EACH ONE OF US.
