Bay Path West Boylston North Uxbridge Grafton Oxford Hudson Catholic Leicester David Prouty Northbridge on ODOOONBAON ® 50 The 1986 football season for the Woolies was everything that was to be expected. This being a rebuilding year, the Woolies went 1-8-1. This year the team got a new coaching staff, consisting of Head Coach Don Fouracre and As- sistant Coach F. Corbin Roach with help from Tom McNamara. The Seniors this year, Pat Rocheleau, Jim Bara, Mike Anderson, Mike Remuck, and Mark Gonya played outstandingly well with help from Juniors, Greg Jacobson, Jon Flammand, Jeff Rob- erts and Matt Corridori. Rocheleau made star of the week and Matt Corridori made honorable mention. The team’s only win came when they defeated Oxford 12 - 0 and they tied Bay Path 8 - 8, but came up just short of beating North High. The 1986 football season was very memorable, leaving Millbury High with terrific images for future players. Their spirit and determination provided many exciting moments for both spectators and players. The team spirit, combined with coaches Mrs. St. John, Mrs. Snider and Captain Heather Bourassa, helped pull the team together through the most difficult matches. Although they only won 7 games and 2 matches, the team did reach their goal. 51 BOYS SOCCER ’86 BACK ROW: Zbyszek Przyborowski, Ben Bumquist, Tom Grabuskas, Brian Roach, Bob Ayotte, Jamie Racicot. Before the season started, Austin may have had some doubts about his upcoming team. Losing record-setting scorers in Brian Parath and Matt Reney, he had to come up with a solution to be successful this season. The solution? Defense. Although fielding a very young and inexperienced team, the Woolies defense could ba- sically stop anyone in their path. Sophomore goalie Bob Ayotte lead the league in goals allowed, under one per game. Ayotte’s success could be greatly assisted by the play of the Millbury fullbacks and halfbacks. They kept the ball down the other end of the field to give the offense a chance to score. Mark Cabana, Matt Bleau, Steve Couture and Jamie Racicot were the other half. Usually, goals for Millbury didn’t come very abundantly, but when they did, they were important. The combination of offense and defense proved successful at sea- son’s end. Posting a win over Oxford late in the season gave the team a place in the Districts. They ended the season in a humble manner in an offensive route by Algonquin, but not before beating Montachusett and Oxford. Sutton Assabet Bartlett Shepherd Hill North Tantasqua Oxford Tantasqua Doherty Oxford Hopedale Shepherd Hill Burncoat Sutton South St. Mary’s Wahconah Red NOONDDCOCONFHRNOTDC OW The Millbury Girls Soccer Program is alive and well and progressing a little more each year. The team finished 1986 with a record of 12-3-2. This is the best record thus far. Remember that the program is only in its 3rd year. Millbury advanced to the quarter-finals of the Western Mass. Tour- nament for the second year in a row. They beat a strong St. Mary’s of Westfield team 3-1. They lost to eventual State Champion Wahconah Regional of Dalton, Mass. The game was played under the worst weather conditions imaginable. Their coach, Ron Dunham, has felt all along that these seniors have been the foundation of the Millbury soccer program. Ellen Ward capped off a record-breaking career by scoring 74 goals in three years. Tammy John- son, Lynne Picard, Annette White and Kathy Dupuis also played very well and provided the leadership necessary to win when there were so many underclasswomen on the team. Tammy Johnson came off of knee surgery over the summer only to reinjure the same knee and miss the playoffs. That was a crushing blow to Tammy and her teammates. Look for Millbury to “beef up” its schedule next year and maybe go a little further in tournament play. The names: Bush, Dow, Krumsiek, Hoel, Ayotte, LaBreck, Wade, Orsi, Pye, and Luby are the stars of the future. 53 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY °86 1980 1982 1989 aN BACK ROW: Chris Carle, Brian Haynes, John Casey. After a full week of learning new cheers, chants and dance routines, the squad was awarded tro- phies for Team Unity and Most Improved. In addition to cheering for the Var- sity Football and Basketball teams, the cheerleaders hosted a cheering clinic for fifteen high schools from Massa- chusetts and Rhode Island. A number of other fund raisers were also held to help get them closer to a future goal of purchasing new uniforms. The cheerleaders were coached by Mrs. Mary Jamieson. Mrs. Jamieson has coached the cheerleaders for seven years. FIRST ROW: Jim Bara, Jim Tuttle, Paul Boucher, Brian Haynes, Annette White, Anthony Dupuis, Mark Gonyea, John Casey. The 1986-1987 Millbury Indoor Track Teams had their best season ever. The Boys Team finished third in the Central Massachusetts Indoor Track League with a 6-2 record, 11-2 overall. The squad was led by seniors Paul Boucher, Jim Tuttle, John Casey, Brian Haynes, Tony Dupuis, Jim Bara, Paul Grenier, and Mark Gonyea. Season highlights were Brian Haynes’ two mile run in the state meet, Paul Boucher’s 4th place finish in the Districts in the 300 and Jim Tuttle’s season scoring of 132 3 4 points. The Girls Team finished 4th in the league with a 4-3-1 record, 9-3-1 overall. The Girls Team had only one senior, Annette White, who was injured most of the season. Highlights of the year included school records in the shot put by Jodi Cronin with a throw of 32’ 4 1 4” and in the 1,000 yard run by Kristen Bumpus with a time of 3:07.4. The Girls Team has a fantastic future with a superb group of underclassmen returning next season. FRONT ROW: Greg Jacobson, Mike Remuck, Steve Bott, Jeff Modig, Greg Bernard, John Gordon and Manager Lisa Lube. This year’s team got off to a bad start at 0-3. They ran off 5 wins in a row to start the league schedule. An 11-3 finish could win the championship, most years, but not this one. The coach was very pleased with the play of the Woolies in league competitio n. Leicester was the eventual winner at 13-1. Millbury finished in second place. When a team starts the season you have a few goals in mind: 1. Win the Leauge 2. Get into the Clark Tournament 3. Qualify for the District Tournament The senior leadership that helped reach 2 out of 3 was provided by Greg Bernard (Capt.), Steve Bott, and Jeff Modig. There was a great deal of pressure on these players to repeat the winning tradition at Millbury. They handled it very well. They possessed a large amount of character and determination. To some schools 12-8 is a great season, but the players felt that they could have done a little better. The future may be bright if the remaining players work as hard as this year’s Millbury team. 58 Shepherd Hill Northbridge David Prouty Uxbridge West Boylston Oxford Leicester Grafton Northbridge David Prouty Uxbridge West Boylston Oxford Leicester Grafton Holliston Marian Sutton Clark Northbridge Bartlett 7 26 15 30 22 18 26 12 28 21 30 22 22 25 28 31 30 GIRLS BASKETBALL ‘86-7 BACK ROW: Katie Hedlund, Jodi Bush, Rob in Finney, Kathy Combs, Darlene Scarra, Beth Krumsiek and Coach Robert Nicoletti. THE LONG AWAITED o TOMORROW IS SUDDENLY TODAY THE LONG AWAITED o TOMORROW Is SUDDENLY TODAYS “The Way We Were” Mem’ries light the corners of my mind, misty water color mem’ries of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we give to one another, for the way we were. Can it be that it was so simple then, or has time rewritten every line. If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we—could we. Mem’ries may be beautiful and yet, what's too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter, we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were. The way we were.
