From the day we asked him to be our class advisor freshmen year until our Graduation Day, George has dedicated himself to the success of our class. He didn’t run our class however, he allowed the President, with input from the class, to take charge. He only advised, which allowed growth throughout the class. Through the four years of working on fundraisers and events, special friendships developed between George and class members. The class was run with mutual respect between George and class members Through his determination our class developed an excellent reputation of being united. George was the basis of all of our successes. Our gratitude goes also to Mr. Eugene Genese, our yearbook advisor. Through his guidance and support we. were able to produce a successful yearbook for the Class of ’85. 2 Like the bird up in the sky Life has taught us how to fly Faculty - 8 Seniors - 15 Senior Events - 33 Clubs Activities - 55 Sports - 77 Sponsors - 109 lil «gia eae on ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Mr. Daniel Carmody Principal Dr. Alfred J. This event was advertised throughout our town for people in the community. All of the children wore costumes. Members of the senior class played games with the children, and led them through the terrifying haunted house. The evening was as much fun for the participating seniors as it was for the children. It was a truly haunting experience. On Wednesday, October 31, we had our Senior Dress-Up Day. Most of the senior class dressed up in unusual and creative costumes. The day was full of fun, with laughter and smiles illuminating the senior class. JUNIOR PROM ‘Wonderful Tonight’ Our Junior Prom was held on May 18, 1984 at the Hogan Center of Holy Cross College. A buffet was served which provided a wide array of foods, and Crosswinds provided hours of enjoyable music for dancing and entertainment. The Prom Queen and her Court were chosen halfway through the evening. The Court consisted of Lori Akley, Brenda Bergeron, Heather Christman, Sharon Frazier, Donna Lawson, and Kristin Mangiulli. Cindy Willand was the Prom Queen. Our Prom night was spectacular. It was the first formal occasion most of us had experienced, and everyone fully enjoyed themselves. The memories of our special night will live forever. It was definitely a “Wonderful Tonight!” SEMI-FORMAL Our Senior Semi-Formal was held on Friday, March 22, 1985 from 7-12 pm. The band, Arctic Beach, supplied the music and added to the memorable evening. The Semi-Formal took place in our gym, which was uniquely decorated in red, white, and pink. Through the use of hundreds of balloons and streamers an intimate setting was effectively created. This event was the first of many to come during the last few months of our senior year. SENIOR SUPPER Maironis Park was the setting for our Senior S Ba 1 Or lat Supper, held on May 24, 1985 at 7:00. The evening % i began with a slide presentation of the Class of 1985 at numerous fund raisers and events during the past four years of High School. ‘Looking back’’ was fun and at times very funny since we’ve all grown and changed. The Class Gifts were given out after the slide presentation. Heidi Robbins and Kristin Mangiulli wrote and presented a class gift for everyone. The gifts were both funny and creative which added to the free spirit of the evening. After the gifts were presented the rest of the evening was for socializing; the dance floor was filled with fun- loving Seniors awaiting June 2nd, our Graduation Day. 44 CLASS TRIP Our Class Trip was held on Wednesday May 22, 1985 at the Frank Davis Resort in Connecticut. The weather was beautiful. A sunny sky and warm temperatures made our trip more enjoyable. The day was full of activities and competitions. We were invoved in many track and field events, like tug-of-war, wheelbarrow and sac races, and a balloon toss. Also, there were many other activities available to take part in like canoeing, horse back riding, golf, volleyball, and swimming. Our own Susan Murray won a swimming contest in which she competed against other schools. Lunch and dinner were served at the Resort. Both meals were excellent and greatly appreciated during a very eventful day. A dance contest was also held, and many in our class danced their hearts out and definitely stood out. When it was time to head home, our class was exhausted and most of our faces were burnt. Everyone thought the day was exciting and fun and worth waiting for. 45 AWARDS NIGHT CLASS DAY Friday, May 31 was the date of our Class Day. This was the last activity our class shared as high school students. Graduation was only two days away. The class history was the first item discussed. We looked back on our four years during High School. We remembered all of our hard-working Class Officers, and the many fund raisers we organized. We also remembered our outstanding winning record during the past three Winter Carnivals as well as our memorable Prom Night. Through our class history it became evident that High School has had many “great times” we'll never forget. The Last Will and Testament and our Class Prophecy were also read which brought laughter as well as a sense of unity within our class. Before our Class Day was completed, Georges Desrosiers, our class advisor, was presented a watch from the Class of 1985, in appreciation for the dedication he’s shown towards our class. As our class dispersed from our Class Day activities, excitement and anticipation for graduation was definitely in the air! GRADUATION Finally the day we’d all been waiting for came, June 2, our Graduation Day. Walking in the processional out onto the field generated feelings of pride. Parents, relatives, and friends assembled to watch us proceed into adulthood. We, each member of the Class of 1985, were honored. As “Pomp and Circumstance” played, the actual meaning of Graduation became evident. The ceremony was to show the individual accomplishments of every class member. Finally, we were recognized for our own achievements. After assembling on the bleachers, Donna Young began her speech. Everything she said was true. As we looked around the realization of never seeing classmates again became a reality. Acquaintances we have taken for granted were ending - we’ll all be expanding our horizons differently. It’s scary - we’re not going to be able to hide within the walls of Millbury High School anymore. Ken Heard was the next speaker. He spoke of the growth that is represented through Graduation. It was so hard for us to believe that it’s time to take complete responsibility for our lives. We found it hard to believe, we’re actually adults. a ur wor EE vga TCHS ANT! Kristin Mangiulli was the last student speaker. She spoke of optimisim. In High School we had great times, but they are over now so we must turn to the future with hope. She’s right. What’s done is done and it’s definitely time to move on and the choices we make could turn out to be the best years of our lives. Finally our guest speaker Dr. Maurice Plasse relayed an encouraging message. His philosophy was to attack life with determination and success will be guaranteed. While listening to him, we thought of our own expectations and goals. We realized determination is an essential factor in making our dreams come true. After the speeches, we were glad to have the chance to stop thinking of what’s to come and what’s been and watch every classmate, one by one, receive their diplomas. We'd been looking forward to this day for a long time. As we switched our tassels from the left to the right side, we found ourselves not actually believing we graduated. It was over so quickly. This was the last time we, the Class of 1985, will be all together. We'll remember this day forever. It’s so hard to believe it’s all a memory now. JUNE 2, 1985 LIKE THAT BIRD UP IN THESKY LIFE HAS TAUGHTUS — HOW To FLY 51 52 IKE THAT BIRD UP IN THE SKY LIFE HAS TAUGHT US W HOW TO FLY CLASS SONG FLYING FREE There is a place I call my own where I can stand by the sea, And look beyond the things I’ve known, and dream that I might be free. Like the bird above the trees gliding gently on the breeze, I wish that all my life I’d be without a care, and flying free! But life is not a distant sky without a cloud, without rain, and I can never hope that I can travel on without pain. Time goes swiftly on its way. All too soon we’ve lost today. We cannot wait for skies of blue or dream so long that life is through So life’s a song that we must sing, a gift of love — we must share. And when we see the joy it brings, our spirits soar through the air. Like that bird up in the sky, life has taught us how to fly. For now we know what we can be and now our hearts are flying free! : i) Last Will and Testament We the class of 1985, being of sound mind and body, do hereby bequeath all of our worldly possessions in the form of this Last Will and Testament. WINTER CARNIVAL This year’s Winter Carnival was filled with much excitement and spirit. It was a competition between all of the classes throughout the week. The signs of friendship and good sportsmanship were shown throughout the week. People became friends and worked together. The week ended with a dance to announce the winners. The result was both a shock and a surprise to all the classes. The Juniors and the Seniors had tied. Since the Senior class had won the past two Winter Carnivals, they again came out on top. The Sophomore class finished third while the Freshmen finished fourth. All of the classes worked hard to make this year’s Winter Carnival a great success. “THE HEART OF WINTER” 66 THE CLASS OF 85 $ MINT! 67 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION The 1984-85 school year was a busy one for the National Honor Society. The members, Lynne Andresano, Heather Christman, Michelle Diguette, Lisa Gagne, Joseph Gagliardi, Elaine Golinski, Kenneth Heard, Christine Luikey, Stacey McKenzie, Amy Moore, Heather Needham, John Phillips, Heidi Robbins, Virginia Sprague, Audra Tella, Lisa Williams, and Donna Young worked hard throughout the year to sponsor services such as a canned good drive for the needy and a blood drive. The Honor Society also provided baskets for needy families during the Christmas season, and held a carnation drive for Valentine’s Day. The highlight of the year for the National Honor Society, however, was the induction of new members on Friday evening, April 26. Kathy Jo Bruno, Wayne Cluett, Robert Forte, Lisa Iacone, Daniel Najemy, Lynne Picard, Karin Stead, Brett Taft, James Tuttle, and foreign exchange student Kam Kit Wong were inducted during the formal ceremony. Senior Honor Society members discussed the qualities of the National Honor Society, and the chorus provided entertainment. It was a beautiful and memorable evening. 68 qV z0O Oo — = zO zz Oo JUNIOR PROM The Junior Prom was held at the Hogan Center on the campus of Holy Cross on May 17, 1985. The band, Nightshift, provided a nice variety of music for everyone to dance throughout the evening. The highlight of the evening was the choosing of the prom queen. Stacey McKenzie was the queen and the members of her court consisted of Christine Luikey, Laurie Fountaine Jodi Walkonen, Kelly Tuttle, Janet Nelson, and Gail Scholtz. “Heaven” was played twice during the night, once for the queen and her court and once for everyone to enjoy. The theme, “A Night in Heaven” was very appropriate for an evening that will stay in the minds of many for years to come. STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY Student Government Day was held on Monday April 29, 1985, following a week- long campaign and a day of voting. Juniors and seniors were allowed to run for the various town offices, including seats in the school department, the Millbury Public Library, the town hall, and various other positions. The winners spent the day with their counterparts, and learned a lot about the workings of local government. After a morning of information and questions, a buffet was held for the town office holders and their Millbury High counterparts at the Asa Waters mansion. The day was not only informative and interesting, it was fun as well. 71 S.A.D.D. WEEK SADD Week was a huge success for both those who coordinated it and for those who participated in it. The week consisted of many presentations and guest speakers, including Philip Vairo, president of Worcester State College. The first three days of the week were filled with a variety of presentations ranging from skits to films to guest speakers. The fourth day of the week a Health Fair was held. At the fair were a variety of agencies which dealt with teen concerns and problems. The week was concluded with a memorial service and rally, conducted in memory of lost friends. Even more exciting than the events of the week was the great enthusiasm which was raised through out the school. The week seemed to have a great effect on the whole school as the dangers of drinking and driving were made evident. GODSPELL On March 15 and 16, 1985, the music and drama departments collaborated to present “Godspell,” a contemporary musical based upon the gospel according to St. Matthew. The musical is a light- hearted and touching way in which to spread the word of the Lord. Mr. Eugene Genese directed the production, with Mr. Roger Desrosiers serving as producer. Mr. Gerald Poulin was the music director. The cast consisted of Kenneth Heard as Jesus Christ, Dean Giovanucci as John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot, and Deborah Casey, Heather Christman, Elizabeth Cox, Michelle Diguette, April Fristensky, Paul LeBlanc, Patricia Maguire, Amy Moore, Heather Needham, Nicole Pappas, and Donna Young as the faithful followers of Jesus. The production was an enormous success, and will be long remembered by its audience as well eecececeeccseseea as its cast and crew. _ Peaaeeeseseeaas _ DRAMA CLUB Mr. Roger Desroisiers, Mr. Eugene Genese, Kenneth Heard, Donna Young, Dean Giovannucci, Paul LeBlanc, Michelle Diguette, Nicole Pappas, Elizabeth Cox, April Fristensky, Amy Moore, Patricia Maguire, Heather Needham, Heather Christman, Percy, Deborah Casey, Annette White, Erika Hokanson, Karin Tylor, Susan Ellie, Brian Carignan, Ferol Hagstrom, Carrie Gurney, Audra Tella, Virginia Sprague, Donna Demers, Kam Kit Wong, Lisa Gagne, Karen Adams, Karin Hoel, Karin Stead, Brian Johnson, Mike Kaczyinski, Sharon Frazier, Robert Campbell, Joseph Gagliardi, John Phillips, Paul Rocheleau, Anthony Dupuis, Lisa Markarian, Nancy MaclInerny, Erin Cassidy, Jodi Walkonin, Karin Hjort, Mellisa Bubon 78 silt TBALL 2 a we Top row: Coach Tom Hall, Allen Shorette, Jesse Girad, Mark Gonya, Matt Belsito, Kevin Simpson, Brian Dow, Guy Paquette, Coach Tom Boehrman, Coach Tom McKenny. VOLLEYBALL 80 This year’s volleyball team started off on shaky ground with only one returning player, Audra Tella. The team was also under two new coaches, Mrs. Susan St. John and Mrs. Linda Snider. According to Coach Snider, the 1984 volleyball season may be viewed as unsuccessful in terms of wins and losses, yet it was a season of great individual improvement and growing team spirit and improvement. When viewed in this light, it was an extremely successful year. Audra Tella proved to be the outstanding scorer for Millbury in terms of her serving throughout the season. She was also relied upon for her experience and leadership during the season. Three other supportive players, Donna Hovagimian, Debbie Noel, and Sandra Imbody, proved to be strong, reliable servers. All players exhibited improvement with Heather Bourassa, of the freshman class, showing the greatest potential for growth. The highlight of the Volleyball season was an October match against Algonquin. The scores in the match were 15-5, 14-6, and 16-14. It was the team’s best match all season. This year’s team will be an experienced and enthusiastic basis on which to build a winning team next year. Top row: Karen Adams, Deidre Phelan, Sandra Imbody, Debbie Noel. Coach Ron Dunham led the girls to a very successful record of 7-5-2, missing an appearance in the District Playoffs by only one point. The team had an excellent turn-out of underclassmen with only one senior, senior Cindy Willand, on the team. Three outstanding players with exceptional talent were members of the team. The boy’s team had many returning members creating a strong and knowledgable team. Team captains Mark Bubon and Heather Christman provided both guidance and leadership which helped the teams to final records of 7-7-0 for the girls and 5-9- 0 for the boys. The boy’s team was led this year by first and second place runners, Mark Bubon and Paul Rocheleau. The team also had several other strong runners which helped to achieve victories. Although the team had several talented runners, the boy’s just couldn’t seem to get it together and the final record wasn’t as good as the team had expected. Although the girl’s record wasn’t as good as in other years, the team still had an excellent year. High points for the girl’s team included wins over Grafton and David Prouty and a tenth place finish by Heather Christman in the SWCL meet. Their determination, dedication, stamina, and enthusiasm brought them great success. It was an excellent season for the cheerleading squad. They cheered the football team through good and bad times, as well as igniting school spirit during the basketball season.
