With Honor We Dedicate to Mrs. Mary S. Johnston Mrs. Johnston’s office is continuously overflowing with permanent records, scholarship applications, standardized tests, and the never-ending flow of students who seek guidance counseling. Always with a willing heart and a helping hand, she has the amazing ability to give sound advice, and even more important, she is a true friend to all. - mm Working With Us And For Us The Wake County School System is ably guided by Aaron E. Fussell, Superintendent. To help make Millbrook High School the best is our Advisory Board, composed of Steve Blackman, Jim Thompson, John C. Allers, Chairman; Curtis Thompson, Kester Poole, Willie B, Summey, Carl J. Turner, Andrew Utley, Calvin E. Hunter were not present for pictures. Principal’s Message To you, all the students of our new Millbrook High School, I offer my congratulations for an exceedingly pleasant and effective first year. Together, we have faced many problems-- an unfinished build- ing, no assembly area, too little furniture, workmen by the dozen busily occupied with their noisy chisels, saws, and hammers, classroom trailers we thought we had left behind us— yet, in spite of these many obstacles you have triumphed, and have completed a high quality school year. As Henry Ford once said: “Coming together is a beginning; Keeping together is progress; Working together is success.’’ Our coming together in this building was just the beginning of all the good that will come out of our new high school. Progress and final success will be reaped only if we keep together and work together. As H. G. Wells has put it, Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.’’ Knowledge is power, and we may well say that Millbrook High is the power house from which you draw strength for success in life- -success which will outlast the brick and metal of its construction. To the Seniors of 1968, of whom we are so very proud, I offer special congratulations! As the first and the best, you have set very high standards for those who will follow you. You have served a worthy apprenticeship; we will watch you with affection as you enter your professional role. Now your life’s play is underway- -what role will be yours? In this “drama of life’’ you are given the power to select your own part. Your teachers have tried to give you the proper preparation, but they cannot play your role for you. Only you can place yourself into your proper role—that of a job, technical school, college, marriage, or service of your country. To succeed fully in this role you must aspire, perspire, persist and resist! You must show sincerity, humility, and un- selfishness — and success will surely be yours. Find your role and fill it well, so that Millbrook may continue to look on your accomplish- ments with deserved pride. As Longfellow wrote, “Not Enjoyment and not sorrow Is our destined end or way. But to act, that each tomorrow Finds us farther than today.’’ To the Seniors, I bid a sad and fond farewell. In leaving, you create a void that cannot be filled. To the underclassmen, I issue a challenge to live up to the great image created by the class of 1968. ,1 It ’s Sweeney, not Sweetie! Assistance In Many Forms « Mrs. Wheeler, our secretary and bookkeeper, can always find, time to answer a question. The office assistants, Jeanne Casteen, Kathie Stallings, Pam Layton, Carol Cavey, Karen Mischke, Sharon Long, Ann Bradsher, Bill Cross, Aaron Fussell, and Peggy White, make good use of their study halls as they relive Mrs. Wheeler of much addi- tional work. No Matter which side of the serving tables you are on, 11:45 a. m. to 1:15 p. m. is hectic. Just ask Mrs. Gupton or Mrs. Allen. Indispensable Service The old ideas of a cafe- teria were r evamped to included tables for four, a sliding wall and much shiny, new equipment. Moving into our new facilities with us was our fine staff of cafeteria workers: Mrs. Lessie Robertson; Mrs. Mae Gupton; Mrs. Helen Buffaloe; Mrs. Ruby Allen; Mrs. Mildred Averette, Manager. All sorts of gear is necessary to keep MHS spotless. To Our School It takes courage to tackle all the fingerprinted windows and displays. Keeping our school clean and neat is an endless job for Eugene Parham, Head Janitor; Ruth Chamblee; Otis Yarborough; and Lessie Finch. Accomplishments Boys State will never be the same again according to our representatives: Michael Wollett, Roger Haith- cock, and Mike Thompson. Chosen by Seniors and faculty, Margaret Mann is Millbrook ' s DAR Good Citizen. Juanita Long and Pam Layton thoroughly enjoyed their stay at Tar Heel Girls State last summer. In Many Forms USES FOR THE STUDENT ACTIVITY ja m clubs St, Dejuan Williams and Mike Thompson attended the Student Council Workshop held at Mars Hills last summer. m - mm - Millbrook’s nominees for the Morehead Scholar- ship to attend UNC were Rex Funderburk, Mike Thompson, and Roger Haithcock. Bringing still another honor to MHS is Roger Haithcock, National Merit finalist. Marshals for the 1967 graduation exercises were Gayle Fulcher, Charles Weant, Roger Haithcock, Juanita Long, Bob Hardee, Mike Thompson, Margaret Mann, Rex Funderburk, Michael Wollett, and Lois Johnson. Carol Walton, All -State Band member, and Mrs. Willett quickly review a piece of music. Chosen for their musical abilities to represent Millbrook in the All- County Band were 1st ROW: S. Bolling, T. Barham, M. Norby, D. Ward, J. Alley ' , R. Funderburk. 2nd ROW: R. Funderburk, C. Pierce, C. Tilley, B. Minter. 3rd ROW: R. Perry, M. Jones, C. Walton. Powderpuff Derby The annual Powderpuff game offered something for everyone - strong, handsome football players, talented and lovely cheerleaders, and, of course, a beautiful Powderpuff Queen and her” charming attendants. In a really rough game the Alley Cats squeezed by the Bad Kittens with a score of 13-7, At the sight of such a superb ex- ample of the male physique, the girls really went wild and fought for his company at the game. As other envious beauties looked on, Tiny Jones, the 1967 Powderpuff Queen, was crowned at one of the wackiest half-times ever. 1 yKgSH| ■hi wm? , B B r ,j ' a. Interclub Council In the absence of Business Manager Bob Wunsch, Susan Ferguson and Kathryn Cooper, Assistant Business Man- ager, found that Laurel finances kept them busy. Margaret Mann, Editor; Betty Hatcher, Assistant Editor; and Miss Pate, Adviser; didn ' t always agree on which picture to use. Laurel — A Dream, Debbie Peterson; Juanita Long, Features and Activities Editor; Brenda Rooks; Carol Walton, Art Editor; and Barbara Minter always looked for pictures of friends before settling down to work. There was never a dull moment when photo- graphers Roger Haithcock, Paul Allen, and Bob Hardee planned strange, new ideas for candid pictures. Fitting just the right copy in a certain space often perplexed Wanda Strickland; Sherron Minter; Sandra Bolling, Curricu- lum Editor; John Chappell; and Cathy Wheeler, Copy Edi- tor. Then Reality Rickie Sink; Marvin Waldo, Boys ' Sports Editor; Debbie Blackmon; Pam Layton, Girls ' Sports Edi- tor; and Mary Griffin had a tough time deciding between group pictures and individual poses. Naturally Judy Bass, Underclassmen Editor; Janet Bass; Pam Williams; Gwen Hall; Elaine Bartholomew; Ann Bradsher, Senior Class Editor; Ann Thompkins; and Beryl Cox felt their pictures should be made over if they weren’t satisfied with the original. From time to time reading copy be- came more interesting to Gwen Davis and Head Typist Wanda Mattingly than just typing it. Millbrook Marching MILLBROOK N.C MILLBROOK HIGH SCHOOL 1st ROW: B.
